OK Newsaramers,

Let's hear what you think about one of the fastest rising publishers of year, Speakeasy Comics! Tell us which titles you like or don't and why, and anything else you want to say about them. The Speakeasy creators are a great bunch of folks so if you have any questions drop 'em here and I'm sure they'll be answered!

Rock it!

Thanks for the opportunity, Sal.

I started with Atomika (which I believed is now being published elsewhere). The look and feel of the story was so different, that I loved it.

The Hunger also has been a great read. Mr. Torres is a member at anoter board I post at (jinxworld, aka, the brian michael bendis board) and he got me excited for this different look at 'zombies'.

The addition of Elk's Run to your stable makes me giddy. I loved Josh and Noel's look at a town that isolated itself on purpose, and how it all went tragically wrong.

The different perspectives on the story each issue is great, and gives a greater depth to what you are seeing, and offerr perspective and motivation for the characters that makes sense.

Ravenous was a nice OGN, with a twisted story, and the hommages to Poe found within the story were like Easter eggs on a DVD to regular Poe readers.

I really like the first issue of Mutation. Let's hope it keeps alive.

I'm buying Helios and Rocketo, which are both great, and I plan on buying Shotgun Wedding and Spell Game.

BTW, is Super Crazy TNT Blast a mini or an ongoing series?

How could I forget Rocketo!!

The book is SOLID.

Issue two completely blew me away (not that #1 didn't, but #2 surprised me with its talke of the life of Rocketo Garrison.

Where does the series go from here?

Will we see flashback stories of him as a youth?

And I really hope that we also get to see some stories that deal with Rocketo in his new situation as an older man.

I found the rise and fall of Rocketo in issue 2 a totally enthralling tale.

And the art was miles above what I am reading in some other books. The style fits the story perfectly.

Tried Atomika, but couldn't get into it.

But I loved Hero@Large. Thought that was really funny.

But so far, that's all I've gotten from Speakeasy.

I'm reading from Speakeasy: Hero@Large, The Adventures of Bio Boy, Smoke & Mirrors, Shotgun Wedding, and Strangeways. I'm a big Speakeasy fan at the moment, they're putting out some great stuff! :D

I was into Atomika, but my shop wasn't able to get it anymore once it bolted. I really dig Beowulf a whole so far. Definitely good stuff. I'm still waiting for Yoshitaka Amano's Hero. Any word on when that's coming out? I haven't had a chance to check out Helios or Elk's Run yet, but I definitely plan to.

Elk's Run is currently my favorite speakeasy title (even though it's not there yet). And I've really been enjoting Grounded and "Super-Crazy TNT Blast":)

I really dig Beowulf, the issues I have read have been very good and the art has been unique with great colouring.

Does anybody know the creative team of the next issues?

I too, am wondering what the hell happened to Yoshitaka Amano's Hero. Number 2 (which is funny because I thought it was a Graphic Novel not an ongoing series) has been solicited in the December Previews, so the first one should have been out by now, yes?

I am also reading Grimoire (sad to see that Djeff is leaving the book), Of Bitter Souls (which could use a little more depth--just feels like a lot of action without enough back-story), Smoke & Mirrors, Spellgame, Strangeways, Shotgun Wedding (one-shot), and some others that have yet to come out. Perhaps I'm trying too much too quickly but a lot of these titles seem to have great potential and I'm all for supporting good stories. Good Luck to SpeakEasy and I hope they stick around for awhile!!

I get Beowulf, and have really been enjoying the series. The last issue was good, but I thought the art was lacking I really enjoyed the art in the first 3 issues, but that might have just been me.

I get pretty much everything Speakeasy puts out. In the space of a few months they've earned an "automatic buy" from me - something I don't even do for Vertigo books.

Tell me if I've missed anthing you've put out.

The Grimoire
Hero@ Large
Hunger
Beowulf
Atomika (formerly, I know)
Adventures of Bio-Boy
Spellgame (tomorrow!)
Mutation
Of Bitter Souls
Strangeways
Elk's Run - hell yes
Rocketo
Super Crazy TNT Blast
Smoke & Mirror

Oh, and I have another question: In the latest Previews, I see Yoshitaka Amano's Hero #2 (which I am dying to get my mitts on), but I don't ever remember seeing #1 in Previews or out on the shops. What's up with that? Where and when can I score a copy?

Thank you

Super Crazy TNT Blast is an ongoing series...last I heard.

Don't forget to check out Project EON! It comes out next month (November). Cameron (from Project Eon) makes a guest appearance in Mutation #3!

Hey, Kristin. I wanted to thank you for including my two titles there.

As for Hero...that book is MIA and I have no idea when #1 is coming out. My guess, however, is that it will be soon. Because if I know Adam, he would never solicit for two if #1 wasn't all completed and turned in. I know for a fact that he has not been happy about the seven month delay on this book. But, I hear that Amano is a perfectionist and I guess he wanted to redo pages.

If you haven't yet read PARTING WAYS...that is an AWESOME GN that is on my pick list as top GN of the year.

Just because Sal A isn't at Speakeasy anymore, keep getting that book.

Mike Penny's Helios is very cool. Don't forget that.

Super Crazy is awesome. I absolutely freakin' love it.

Rocketo is beautiful music. I think Ethen Beavers (Mutation artist) calls it Jazz for the eyes. He is so right.

Elks Run is a great read.

When The Mercury Chronicles comes out, that will kick major ass.

Hero @ Large makes me laugh at loud. Erick Hogan is a genius.

Thanks for picking up our books.

Thanks for checking it out. We are telling back story over the first six issues. The first was a sort of intro.

Issue #2 is a focus on Jobe.
Issue #3 focuses on Magz.
Issue #4 focuses on Sampson.
Issue #5 is all about Salome.
Issue six gives the back story on Pastor Secord.

New Orleans myths coming up:

#2: The Ghost of The Turkish Sultan.
#3: The Boogeyman (The Axeman)
#4: The executed prisoners from the old Carrolltown jail
#5: The Compte De Saint Germain
#6: Lucifer Morningstar...the Devil himself

I hope you stay with us. All will be revealed.:)

You can make them order them in advance. If you need help, just check out previews, fill out the form, and your retailer will order you a copy. It is a shame that this happens. Thanks for buying and reading.

It's very cool that speakeasy is getting this kind of response. I have a book shipping in November called Ellium: Principles Of Chaos which will be a series of quarterly graphic novels. Hopefully everyone will find them to be enjoyable and willing to get stores to bump up their orders! It was in the September previews and the order number is:SEP053087H
Also there is a 22 page preview here: http://www.newsarama.com/Speakeasy/Ellium/Ellium20Pre.htm

Speaking of…

Something I wanted to mention. A number of SE books have been selling out lately. A HUGE reason for this is retailers unsure of the marketability of any new publisher. The easiest way to avoid this and to guarantee you get the books you want is to urge your retailer to order more. If he knows you and x number of your friends will buy it, more will get ordered, we’re able to print more with confidence and there will be more books in stock for reorders! Very few of us actually want to be sold out, it means we can’t grow our audiences. But if we’re only given numbers for a few thousand, we can’t print much over that number, and thus, we get sold out books.

Just something I thought I would mention!

Later!

Do you have any plans to include Marie Leveau lore? Man, folks leave some bizarre stuff at her grave.

I lived in New Orleans for most of the '80s. After Katrina, it's very bittersweet to be reading a comic set there.

I'm reading Rocketo right now, and it is fantastic.

So far, I've been a little leary about whether Speakeasy would last, and whether I want to buy a bunch of half series. I'll likely pick up some trades when they come out, and it seems like the publisher is on solid ground, so I'll be more confident in adding Speakeasy titles to my pull list.

The quality, in general, looks really good.

Speaking only for my series Ellium, I'll honestly say I've done my best to make every book a self contained "theatrical feature". While sub plots invariably continue, each book, regardless in size is supposed to be a satisfying read. Hopefully that can help some!

That is definitely one of my favorite cover images in a damn long time. Can't wait for the book to come out!

Awesome, thanks! Ships in November, but due to it being a graphic novel, if you haven't specifically requested a copy, there is a chance your local comic shop didn't order it. Just fair warning!

I just picked up spellgame, but found it a little hard to follow. I'll re-read it though to see if there was something that I missed.

I just have to say that Super Crazy TNT Blast was friggin' awesome. It is right up there with Invincible for best indie superhero book. In fact it might just be better. The should use the tag line "Probabaly the best superhero team book in the universe". And I wasn't really expecting much from the book to begin with, so imagine my suprise. I also read The Hunger, Of Bitter Souls, Mutation,Atomika, and a few others by the way, so I am for sure a big Speakeasy fan. Speakeasy is all about high quality and good reads. I couldn't recommend them more. But what is up with Atomika? Is it going to another publisher? Also, is there another book with the same name out there?

Atomika left to be self published.

My shop is usually pretty good about stuff like that, but even if they don't, I can always get it online (including the Speakeasy Store, it appears). One way or another I'm getting this book!

There seems to be a glitch in October Previews. It appears in the Speakeasy ads but didn't make it into the order form. I preordered #s 1 and 2 and want to make sure I don't miss #3.

I'm looking forward to the Speakeasy selections coming out today! Whoohoo! (Now, I have to hold that thought, since my comics don't show up on my doorstep until one week after they hit the stores.)

Oops! My mistake...I don't have my pull list on me...and it's quite long! :)

Forgot about Parting Ways. That book was frickin' awesome.

Hopefully Amano's Hero will be coming soon, that's a book I've been looking forward to since earlier this year!

Thank you Mr. Saterlee for responding to my comment about Of Bitter Souls, I am enjoying the book although I failed to mention that earlier, and look forward to more N'awlins Mythology!!

That image on the bottom of your comment is disturbing. Who is that kid?

I pre-ordered my Living and the Dead GN due out today.

Can't wait to read it:

From writer/creators Todd Livingston & Robert Tinnell (THE BLACK FOREST, THE WICKED WEST) and illustrated by Micah Farritor, with afterword by David J. Skal

You are a simple, country doctor in a small village. You have a beautiful wife and a wonderful son -- the perfect life. Only they don't know that in your past -that you did a very bad thing! People died because of it, and you were forced to flee and live incognito. Now, in an opportunity to redeem yourself, you unwittingly unleash a brutal and perverse murderer, a deviant sociopath hell-bent on using innocent people in a Grand Guignol of flesh and blood – a veritable nineteenth-century snuff theater. You alone can end his reign of sick terror -- but at the risk of revealing your secret past and losing everything you love. Only you don't know what's worse - what you've created -- or what you have to do to stop him!

Two questions:

1. Where's The Grimoire # 6?

2. Did Spellgame miss its original solicitation date (it was supposed to ship in September)?

I ask this because I get my comics from an online source once a month & it bugs me when things don't meet their dates. It then equates to not getting the issue until the following month.

I'm more prone to drop books when the publisher isn't meeting its end of the bargain. And then I don't try their other books (I don't get Image titles for this reason).

My copy arived Thursday. I still have to get through a dozen or so single issues before diving into The Living and the Dead.

But, last night, I gave it to my wife, Thingtwo, as she headed to work. When she got home this morning, she woke me up, saying she couldn't help herself, but she just had to tell me she liked it better than any other comic book she's ever read.

So, I'm looking forward to it.
