The last issue of Morrison's Animal Man broke my heart. That was one of the most sadly beautiful ends to a comic.
I recommend Alan Moore's Swamp Thing most of all though.

Enigma
Probably the msot underrated Vertigo book, Peter Milligan's best work and the best gay superhero book by a mainstream publisher all in one.

Actually a few of the more consistant book out there right now in terms of quality and substance right now are from the Vertigo line....
in the lower boards i started a thread a that esposed the greatness that was Y the last man,Fables,Lucifer and others these books tend to get lost in the shuffle this year most than most with all the infinite house of m building going on

I loved Shade the Changing Man, The Invisibles, Kid Eternity, Preacher, Millar's Swamp Thing (need to read Moore's run).
There's a one-shot called Face and the Brother Power one-shot. Both warrant a gander IMO.

WE3... one of the the craziest and greatest book of last year!

It really doesn't get much better than Sandman.. although Moore's Swamp Thing comes close.
Best Vertigo of recent times though?
WE3, Fables, and Y: The Last Man...

The Face one-shot is my favourite piece of writing by Peter Milligan. It's awesome, IMO.
Also check out Vertigo Verite: Girl, by Milligan & Fegredo, which was also marvelous.

Yeah I sort've regret not picking up Y the Last Man when it was first released. I like to be able to start from the beginning, without having to get the tpb, then jump into the middle of the series.
Though tons of good high profile series from Vertigo for this year and next: Loveless, Testament, American Virgin, and more. I think I'm might give one or two of these titles a try so it won't be Y the Last Man for me again.

those Vertigo series that are getting "long in the tooth" as the case may be will soon be ending
Losers at 32
Lucifer at 75
and i think Fables and Y are both halfway into their projected runs......
Swamp Thing is really interest ing again for nad then there is the old warhorse.....
okay what title non Super, non Bat , Non X-men has been running for over 200 issues with no renumbering and no reboot
and no relaunch? no age of apocalypse break...., no Death perios.....
Hellblazer 215+issues and still going!!!!

I just read Sandman last month and as the original Verigo book, I think it deserves a read. It's crazy how everything tied together over a period of 6 years. amazing book.

Maybe, though they did start the vertigo line because of Sandman, no?

Vertigo was created well after Alan Moore had moved on from Swamp Thing ... in fact, Sandman, Animal Man, Doom Patrol, Hellblazer and Swamp Thing were all well into their runs before Vertigo was created. But they all moved to the new label soon after it was formed.

Swamp Thing was the first "Vertigo"-feel book, is what I meant. Before Swamp Thing, that whole vibe we get from Vertigo wasn't there. It paved the way for the weird, cooky, horror-esque books.

they started the line due to the Swamp thing... there was really no place for it.... Sandman coming along the same time as Shade and Animal man sealed the deal...remeber Sandman wasn't a Vertigo title until almost 4 years into its run....
it didn't start Vertigo which people tend to forget.....
what was the catalyst was the aqquisition of a trio of properties from the "adult" line of comics that Disney was going to produce edited by Art Young
Enigma,Sebastian O,and Mercy......these were the first Vertigo only titles......
later on some titles that had been Epic comics over at Marvel were adoipted into the Vertigo line..(Blood,Moonshadow)
and even later many mini series that were the groundwork for Vertigo were later reprinted with a Vertigo label (Breathtaker,Skreemer,World Without End,Tell Me Dark)

Go out and get the trade of Paul Pope's 100%. Just sit back, read it, and love comics forever.

I read the last issue but can't find any of the others which is annoying.
Read the Losers, it's a great book, very good writing and great action, the first trade is also only $10.
Enigma is also very good, the art does take a while to get used to, but the writing is very good and the twists and turns are just great.
DMZ looks very good as does Loveless.
And one final recommendation, try Jonny Double sharp cool writing with great art by Eduardo Risso.

Woah, woah, WOAH!!!
Where did you hear/read that Fables is a finite series? I thought I read that Willingham (the writer/creator) will want to write the title forever...
I hope you're wrong TTROY, as Fables is my fave DC title. :(

Preacher was the first Vertigo title I ever read. I loved Ennis' HITMAN, and thought I'd give Preacher a shot. Glad I did!!!!
other good Vertigo titles (not already mentioned) are the mini's Unknown Soldier (also by Ennis), Human Target and the War Stories one-shots (Ennis again)!

milligan is one of those unsung writers that never seems to get any attetion until he went and did something at maRVEL
HOWEVER Vertigo gave us Enigma, the long running Shade and of course my most recent favourite Human Target
for those that don't know the book was at first a 4 issues mini...then was turned into a Hardcover graphic novel then a ongoing series... alas the book has been cancelled --but here is hoping that it will return for the occasional mini every so often.

Although it maybe should have been, Hitman wasn't a Vertigo book.

Losers
There have been other bight spots but this is a strong 10+ year period.

Defiantely Fables! Best book coming out right now...
Lucifer is a really good series as well, if a little convoluted at times (and it DEFINATELY requires that you've read the relavant Sandman issues)
As far as the "history of Vertigo", Transmet and Sandman are my favorites...
Preacher is decent, but a little too far over the top for my tastes.
If you're a sandman far, you'll definately want to read the dreaming.. its a little hit and miss, but there's some great stuff there.
The original Books of Magic series is also really good, (the Gaiman mini, follwed by the original ongoing), including the Books of Faerie stuff... just be prepared when they tried to turn Tim into DC's harry potter (that's when I stopped reading)
If you like the era, Sandman mystery theatre is a great period book, and is often found in .50 bins.. really good mystery stories, imo.
As far as minis go, I really enjoyed Bloody Mary (may have been Helix) execellent Garth Ennis stuff. Proposition Player was a really fun book as well.

It's so easy to recommend Alan Moore's Swamp Things, and equally easy to forget to recommend Millar's run on the title. I have to say, for me, that it's only just below it in my rankings of all Vertigo titles. It's unbelievably creepy. I absolutely loved it.

For some reason, I too seem to forget it when asked for good Vertigo books. Good run. Very underrated.

There was Rawhide Kid.
And quite a few gay characters in things.
And all the weird bisexual stuff in early Wonder WOman comics.

Im not sure.
I think if she had, DC would probably be loath to actually say it.
But old WOnder Woman comics are so ridiculously filled with bondage imagery its not even funny.
