I have really enjoyed issues one and two, and issue three comes out Wednesday, so I thought it might be time for a Godland discussion thread!
If you still don't know about this great title, the whole first issue is in the Previews section. (http://www.newsarama.com/Image/Godland/issue01/Godland01Pre.htm)
You'll have to buy the second issue, though I have a review up at PBR! (http://www.paperbackreader.com/review.php?ReviewID=925)
Personally, I can't wait til Wednesday.:)

Image has certainly been looking a lot more interesting to me lately, too. If I hadn't so much of my comics budget tied up in crossovers, I would certainly be picking up some more of their titles.

I've only got issue 1 so far (limited funds+80 miles to the nearest comic shop= no comics for me until I get my pel grant), but I'm hooked. That guy's Jack Kirby-Fu is amazing, his style perfectly coveys the King without just straight ripping him off. The writing just so perfectly matches the art... it has that Silver Age comic feel mixed with a sharp wit that doesn't make fun of that era... it's a rare book. I hope they go for 100 issues, and I'll get every one of em.

This is one of my five favourite books out right now, barely eclipsed by Invincible (HC rocked by the way) and it is sooooo much more than a New GOds/Eternals tribute, this sucker is going to redefine the cosmic epic in new ways when all is said and done similar to how Morrison redefined team dynamics in JLA and Ellis on the AUthority, or Kirkman and Walker/Ottley redefined the Teen Hero dynamic on Invincible!

I bought the first 2 issues half off and HOT DAMN what a fun trippy ride. I am a Kirby worshipper and Casey and Scioli are really channeling Kirby's uniqueness in this book. It's still there own work but you can see the love they have for Kirby and these kinds of books. I am with this book as long as it keeps up the level of quality I saw. BASIL CRONUS ROCKS!:D

Three consecutive posts! It looks like Godland is only the beginning of the revival of interest in Kirby!
Marvel is releasing an Essentials for the Eternals -- and Neil Gaiman is writing an Eternals related comic! (http://www.newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=43792) (Clicking on the link will confirm this info, sadly it won't add to it).

What did every one think?
We got a look at the dynamics of the Archer family and a closer look at their relationship with the government (and not everything is all that rosey on both fronts); plus we got some bonding with Adam and Maxim (the space dog) and some more cosmic mysticism. The later included a look at a canine church and more about the Fate of the Stars (though we're not told what that means). Plus, any one have any idea what, or who, Iboga is?
Since this is a discussion thread, spoilers are okay.
Hear that? SPOILERS AHEAD!

'Violence is the new Black!'
I'm intrigued by the whole scope of the series, 'the collective', is Adam's purpose to jumpstart human space exploration to a higher level?

Fair enough. You'll find yet another nod to Kirby in this week's Seven Soldiers release, Mister Miracle, and I know you're enjoying that. Actually, I was amazed at just how much of Kirby's New Gods world and its characters is in it.
What I like most about Godland #3 is the movement towards laying out the relationships between characters. The youngest sister, Angie, describes the new Adam as being "like" her brother, suggesting some doubts on her part, and Neela, who was also a part of the Mars program, is tired of being under his shadow. Shades of the family dysfunction of the Fantastic Four?

i think my problems with this book is i'm not as famialiar with kirbys work as i should be. seen some but, as i stated over at our PBR forums, his DC stuff seems interesting to me and the trades are hard to find or expensive.
maybe i should take a try with the marvel stuff he did do though.

Well, he was the first X-Men artist. You could look into the Uncanny X-Men Essentials. I think, though, that Godland is borrowing from the FF (the Manhattan tower, the family team) much more so.

yeah, well, to be honest with you old-old x-men do nothing for me. it was when claremont came on that it really kicked into gear. that said i have read some of the old stuff. maybe its just the costumes or possibly that it seemed stan lee had a good idea with less idea of what to do with it.

There are four volumes of the original Kirby & Lee FF out there in the Essentials format, and there will be at least one more (of the Kitby & Lee team), so you don't have to bother with the new stuff.

I highly suggest hunting down the Baxter New Gods reprint from the mid 80s, these are generally inexpensive and in colour as compared to the B&W edition that is quite cheap.
As far as Kirby's Marvel work, Eternals. End of story. Find them, read them. Masturbate to them, I don't care, you have to get them and you will understand books like Godland, and appreciate them so much more and oh look, Marvel is doing an Essential Eternals!!

Sometime next year but Kirby only did about 14 or 15 issues of Eternals counting the annual and they generally go for cheap. I bought most of the run in a quarter bin though I am looking for nice mint copies of the series. Hard to find in mint but reading copies are really, really common.
If you like the Eternals I also suggest hunting down the New Gods stuff. Eternals I like soo much better than New Gods because New Gods has this bleak feel to it. New Gods is awesome, one o my favourites, but Eternals seems much more refined and distilled than New Gods.
Well, Mr. Miracle whoops ass too.

(Note: since this is a Godland fan discussion thread, I think spoilers are to be expected.)
Bought isssue four. It contains interesting conversations between Basil and Nicklehead, and between Angie and Maxim, but the real focus is on the attack of Discordia's fortress of solitude, er... pain.
Its another strong issue. Felt like it had a greater emphasis on action, though that may be because the issue was centered on the rescue mission and didn't try to tell us as much about the world of Godland as previous issues did. That gives Discordia some prestige in terms of Godland villians, though she is far from my favourite. For all her attempts at being risque, she is the most conventional so far. I mean, when's the last time you saw someone as original as Basil Chronos?

I discussed my feelings over at the other publisher forum. I thought it was a nice issue, wll stick with it at least a little while longer.
That said, tried Eseential fantastic 4, wasn't able to finish vol. 2(and I have up to 3) before giving up. I just hate the characters. Got to Amazon packages, both Jack Kirby stuff. the first is Fourth World, the other package has the rest of the New Gods stuff.

Godland has a much more polished -- more modern -- story telling sensibility, though many of the connections to FF our obvious. Actually, both Godland and FF have some basis in the original Challengers of the Unknown, but DC hasn't made much effort in getting affordable editions of their comics out for readers.

maybe after DC measures the success of showcase we'll probably see them publish the volumes more than once a month. ocne that ahppens we'll probably see some more different things.
but i think metamorpho and house of mystery prove we'll probably be getting some more offbeat/obscure stuff.

It was so sad reading the last intimates issue yesterday, I really enjoyed the issue (and the infoscroll which was very informative), there was just something special about the tone of the last issue it just makes me sad that it was most likely the last intimates issue I will ever get to read :( Call me whatever but the more I think back to how that issue was handled I just realize how beautifully it was done, I'm really going to miss it

Who knows, those info scrolls did make DC look quite bad and they were also really sad to see how they didn't take the mini-series approach that Casey wanted and that may have found more financial success. Hopefully someone decides to take another chance on this book one day but I doubt it. I thought I read something in the infoscrolls that it was a possibility but I can't find it right now

i didn't read the info scrolls becaus ei didn't like that issue at all. i usually read it on the secodn time through but i put down issue 12 very disappointed. plus i don't take anything casey says seriously since his had a bitter relationship with DC for years. everytime i hear him talk is slams DC which once, twice and such is fine but after awhile it gets annoying. besides, i read comics for escapism not to be reminded how one person has probelms with _______. but thats just me.
i might look through the info scrolls in a second to see whats going on.

okay, read it. DC was niave and should've put more support. however a real problem lays with the fans. remember intimates was avertised, witha 3-4 page preview nontheless, in one of jim lees superman issues that no doubt when number 1 that month. and if i remember right, the comic still didn't crack the 100 mark which is instantly bad sign. dc should've done mroe and maybe they shoul've did the mini-series instead. however, a real large blame lays with the people who didn't buy the comic or talk it up at comic shops or online.
but still, issues 1-9 are the best and i don't care much from there on in. my personal opinions is ale garzas weakest work here, plus the artistic switching and the constant slamming of a company. i hate when both marvel and DC(stupid superman/batman arc) do it and i hate it here. isnide the scrolls is one thing but not the issue itself.
oh well, it was fun and godlands cool. i'll pick up his iron man mini with frazer irving which is one of the only new marvel projects i'm going to buy in singles(sorry deadly genesis, x-factor, and generation M. its a bad month for me to start new books). however from his interviews and the bit i seen him on TV he seems like a bit of a jerk.
though i did meet him once a long time ago. have a signed hulk issue from him somewhere.

Oh, and I'm picking up the series monthly with Issue #7. I was a bit late to jump onboard at the start of the first arc, but I picked up the first two issues recently while in a comic shop in the UK and really loved them... :)

Just got ish #5 today (Monday)
Loved it. Just like I knew I would.
Great characterization. I could really understand where Neela was coming from.
Also, I'm starting to love Friedrich Nickelhead as much as I love Basil Cronus.

Don't you have times when you feel like your head is going to...
The dad's great! Its the minions that make the mad man! I can't help but think of some weird Maus/Mighty Mouse hybrid, though they're obviously meant to be rats.

I thought it time to revive this thread.
I met Scioli yesterday and he was very nice. He had copies of issue 7 on his table, but I resisted the urge to grab one since I already had it on preorder and didn't want 2.
I have to say the first 5 issues have been a ton of fun!
I give image credit for getting the trade of 1-6 on the stands the same day as issue 7. That creates a tremendous jumping on point for new readers.
Tom said the preorders for the trade were good and he also said issue 5 out sold issue 1 which is rare. So I hope good things continue for the godland crew!

i hope they'll do an oversized HC collecting issues 1-13 ala INVINCIBLE ULTIMATE COLLECTION....the art would be sooooo awesome at that size....:D
and while I'm at it, it would be uber-cool if they can make the Iboga 2-page spread on issue #8 to be a pop-up page....

Issues 4 to 7 represented the meat of the first arc. The latest two are setting up for the current. We have the introduction of the three new aliens and now Adam has been (1) shown to be vulnerable to EMP and (2) captured by Nicklehead.

well, with thigns the way they are, i ahd to do some serious trimming of the list. even putting some on MOC in monthly packages. and i'm talking books i really like at that!
but godland didn't make my cut. its fun, but ultimately i realize if i were to miss an issue i wouldn't run abck to the shop looking for it like other books.

According to an article on the Nrama homepage, Godland is going on a three month hiatus, July to September. Issue 12 will be the last one before the break. Apparently the guys have been working hard and needed a rest.
I can see it, but I'll miss it. Godland just screams summer reading.
The article also provided a look at the cover of the second trade:

#14 is out?
What did y'all reckon?
'Hot Q-Ball Break' wasn't an all out mental issue, it was one in which many of the book's subplots progressed. We see what the triad are up to, with some great little phrases such as 'enough orgasmic nattering' and 'once more for unholy entropy!'. Good stuff, we also catch up with the Tormentor and Basil Discordia, an their hunt for Friedrich Nickelhead. Basil continues to be awesome, there's aren't enough fun drug addicts in comics, they're all so grim and down. And then there's Neela, I didn't like her at first, she seemed a little bitchy, but this space quest has been fun, and that pane where her ship is all cut up; awesome. And to top it all off, a new subplot begins! The government is beginning to mistrust Adam. Oh noes.
BUY THIS BOOK!

I liked it! Especially how it is tying so many points together. I am sure the last issue will be brought in too.
My only complaint is that the inking is too dark. Particularly the faces. Much more inking than past issues.
