This past weekend, fans who bought advanced tickets to WIZARDWORLD EAST got a full, preview copy of HULK: NIGHTMERICA #1, the first issue of a new 6-issue limited series premiering June 25th. Written by Robin Laws (IRON MAN) and fully-painted by artist Brian Ashmore, this beautifully-illustrated mini-series tells the haunting tale of fugitive Doctor Bruce Banner, who discovers that being on the run is a little bit easier when you have a charming young woman to run with. But his new friend - the beautiful and mysterious Chrissie Cutler - has her own secrets, and her own demons to run from! And their adventure takes them to a secret and sinister place called Nightmerica!

HULK: NIGHTMERICA #1, with a cover price of $2.99, goes on-sale 6/25 and retailers are reminded its Final Order Cut-off date is 6/5.</blockquote>

judging from the (not very inspired)art, the story is one big cliché superhero comic and totally out of touch with the current theme in the Hulk.
yawn!

Not for nothing, but this doesn't look very interesting at all. The artwork isn't even that good compared to other painted works I've seen.

Hopefully it won't be as bad as Hulk/Wolverine: Six Hours. That sucked. Hard.

I think the days when just the fact that something was painted meant that it was "beautiful" are long gone. Now most people actually require the painting to be good. Unfortunately, one of the three Marvel editors still around, the guy who approved this, hasn't yet learned the difference.

I think the artwork itself is good but it also has a very old, outdated feel to it. That plus the fact that the Hulk doesn't look like the oversized, exagerrated psychotic ape we're all used to seeing kind of ruins this comic for me. Here we have the Hulk looking like some superstrong (but not hulk strong) weightlifter with green paint all over his body. The Hulk portrayed here even looks smarter than the one we're used to seeing. The problem is the Hulk doesn't look very much like the classic, wide-framed, primitive Hulk and the artwork isn't very detailed. That plus using watercolor artwork is very risky because it will always be judged alongside Alex Ross's artwork. The end result is a book that not many people will purchase especially with all the hype from the movie. Marvel should have thought about this one and hired Alex Ross himself if they wanted watercolor artwork or ditched the 50's look and used a high profile artist like Dale Kweown instead. I also don't think Brian Ashmore the artist has a very coherent concept of what the Hulk is all about and it definelty shows in his rendition of the Hulk.

Sorry, but I have to agree with those posting that this does not look very interesting and think that Marvel may have dropped the ball with this one. How many new readers might this bring in only to give them such an off-base view of what the Hulk title is currently like!

I just wish that for the movie tie-ins and cash-ins that Marvel had gone back to creators like Peter David and Dale Keown for both fanboy appeal and character familiarity if they weren't going to use current teams. At least then we might have got a decent story to enjoy as well!!!

Hope I am wrong about this mini-series though as I'm loving the Hulk at the moment!

Aw, now... I don't think it's THAT bad! I always wonder how it would feel for an artist to put months and months into a project, then come to a comics news-site like this and see people responding with how much they think it sucks. I guess that's the risk you take, though, putting your work out there like that.

I went to Philly Con, got the advanced copy, and have read it.

It's not that bad, although the painted artwork isn't the BEST it is still ok. It's the story that's the driver here and not the artwork. While there could have been more info on the woman they talk about in the write up, the dialogue was pretty good.

Looking at the thumbnails I thought the art looked cool, so I was confused as to why everyone was so down on the art. But now that I actually clicked on the link I understand and whole-heartedly agree.

the art is not bad. i like some of it. i hope ashmore takes the complaints and comments and grows from it because honestly it has some great potential. it's almost there.
what's wrong with it? a bit lacking in motion and Emotion. Things don't look like they're moving to me... the car doesn't really look like it's smashing... the atomic dude really doesn't look like he's flying as a result of a pop in the jaw. Give me some blur... give me some exaggerated angles. And hulk looks upset, but not pissed pissed, u know? Also, as someone else stated, the rendition of the hulk looks more like a green muscle-head than some major monster.
if people read it and like it, i'll consider the trade.

But, look how many responses have already been provoked by these few pages. Is it true any publicity is good publicity? Some artists have flourished after being branded bad initially, like ____ ______.
