Dreamwave has provided Newsarama with previews of the covers of the studio’s upcoming Transformers G1: Volume II miniseries, which begins in April. The six-issue series will be a sequel of sorts to the original, and, as previously reported by Newsarama, will be artist Pat Lee’s final work on the robots for the foreseeable future.
The miniseries will be written by Brad Mick, instead of Chris Sarracini, as originally reported by Dreamwave. For a look at the prelude to the new miniseries, click here.
According to the studio, the miniseries will follow Optimus and company as they return to their homeworld of Cybertron. However, don't go expecting a hero's welcome. After tracking down a Cybertronian spacecraft that has crash-landed on Earth, both the Autobots and Decepticons are surprised when Cybertron's new ruler arrives on Earth revealing that the Transformers' home world has finally found peace. But is this utopia all it's cracked up to be?
As a result of the political change of Cybertron, Prime and the Autobots are forced to choose between returning to Cybertron as prisoners or remain on Earth as fugitives. Unfortunately, Prime's decision is rushed when one of his own men betrays him to this new order.
In addition, G1 Volume II will include the debut of classic Transformers such as Ultra Magnus, Hot Rod and Arcee, as well as revelations about the Matrix, Vector Sigma and other staples of Transformers lore. And, given the image of Megatron, things don’t go so well for him in Volume 2.
Plus, according to Dreamwave sources, the Dinobots are back and ready to stomp. Also, G1 Vol. 2 will be Dreamwave’s first foray into developing a definitive Transformers continuity that will lay the groundwork for any and all future storylines.”
As far as the covers go, Dreamwave will be once again publishing the miniseries with both Autobot and Decepticons covers for each issue. However, the solicitation copy for the first issue doesn’t mention that the covers for #1 are triple gatefold, and connect with one another, resulting in an image that is six cover-widths wide. The incentive cover for #1 can be placed alongside the other two versions of #1 to add even more to the image.
The overall, mega-gatefold cover will also ship to retailers as a poster, to place where the Transformers comics are located.

I tried to get into ARMADA, but just didn't do anything for me. Then again, I don't think it was supposed to, really. It's geared more for today's kids, as it's very Pokemon-influenced. I loved the first G1 miniseries from Dreamwave and I'm currenly enjoying THE WAR WITHIN. Can't wait to see this next mini!
And Hot Rod? Oh HELL yeah! Can't wait to see him, Dreamwave style!

"After tracking down a Cybertronian spacecraft that has crash-landed on Earth, both the Autobots and Decepticons are surprised when Cybertron's new ruler arrives on Earth revealing that the Transformers' home world has finally found peace."
And the new ruler is... Unicron?
Volume one did nothing for me and none of the other projects have either so I'll pass on this.

well since Wheeljack died (again somehow) I am all for the return of my other favorite Ultra Magnus. Am I the only one who thinks that the Dreamwave guys are biting off a little too much? I mean why can't we get a mini-series in between this one and the last where Megatron has some evil scheme and the autobots have to stop it. I'm all for having important lasting stories and this one does seem interesting (not too sure about having a cybertronian ruler though) and really fun. I certainly admire Dreamwave for not letting up with the Transformers, even if I do think that they should slow it down. Oh who cares, come on ULTRA MAGNUS!!
Oh yeah, does anyone know if the profiles book will be collected into a hardcover?

I think that Unicron transforms Megatron into Galvatron, and tells him to go to Earth and tell the Transformers he´s the new ruler in Cybertron´s utopia.
And damn, that art looks good. Thanks a lot, Hasbro.
Hey Matt, can you shed some light about who penciled this covers? I have a hard time telling apart Pat Lee from Guido Guidi from Don Figueroa.

For the inspiration to this series, see WildC.A.T.S. vol. 1 issues in the mid-20's where two warring alien races find out that the war is long over, and then the home team gets betrayed by one of their own new members. Superbly written by Mr. Al Moore. Hopefully it won't be too similar though. I'm looking forward to this. Even though the quality of Armada is good, I'm not it's audience, so I'm dropping it. But please, please let me get what I want and have an ongoing G1!

According to Previews, the Autobot and Decepticon covers from issue no. 1 are by Pat Lee. If Dreamwave holds to the tradition of the previous mini, and my "art" eyes are on straight, I would say the the Autobot and Decepticon covers from issue no. 2 are courtesy of Pat Lee, as well, but don't hold me to it (or to Pat Lee...I saw him in a documentary on the Transformers Season 2 DVD set, he's not all that attractive...just kidding, Pat...although Simon Furman was ugly as all heck). The holofoil cover, I can't say for sure, there's no credit in Previews and it's a little too dark (not the .jpg, just the image itself). Sorry I couldn't help you all the way!

Also see the Transformers Generation 2 series, where the Autobots and Decepticons realize that in much of the universe, the war is actually over and ruled by a more advanced Transformers empire. Both sides are hunted down, and one character defects to the empire's side, betraying them all.
Y'know, I'm aware that there's really not any new stories any more, but dang.

Geez I hope we see Galvatron soon! I also hope he is a recreated Megatron and not a totally new character!!!
It would be good if he was Megatron but from another reality! I hope we see Cyclonus and Scourge as his main lieutenants once more!!

I'm glad to finally get to see Ultra Magnus in action. We will probably end up seeing Galvatron too. (And the greatest Decepticon tag team - Cyclonus and Scourge!)
Looks like they've set Magnus up to be the traitor. That doesn't sit right - the guy never had a hint of that in him. :(
Question:
Why do Dreamwave draw Galvatron, Optimus Prime, Ratchet, etc. etc. etc. like the cartoon character, and draw Ultra Magnus like the toy? Where is the consistancy? It seems to symbolize the muddled approach Pat Lee has to drawing the Transformers.
Don't get me started on how he draws poor ol' Optimus.
"Pat Lee can do good cover art, but does awkward and hard-to-follow strip art."
BTW, I'm not all for bashing Dreamwave - it's just that voicing my concerns seems more important than voicing my praises at the moment.....

Yeah...I, also, couldn't get into ARMADA...I tried but just didn't dig the overly manga-fied humans and I'm not quite up to speed with the timeframe...I know the classic 'Formers...Not familiar with BEAST WARS or anything after that so if Megatron isn't a gun and Optimus isn't an 18 wheeler, I'm totally confused. If anyone can tell me exactly how they fit together, I would appreciate it.
I enjoyed G1...It sort of petered out in the end but as a whole it was an interesting return for the big bots. WAR WITHIN is a ton of fun...I'm enjoying the hell out of that...TRANSFORMERS is really the only 80's re-run property that's working for me..I'm losing steam on the new G.I. JOE but will continue buying because the Devil's Due guys were nice enough to buy me drinks...Haven't gone near the others, Thundercats etc. etc. Simply not interested.
I look forward to the new G1 series.

A true artist, while keeping continuity in mind, shouldn't let himself be held down by it, either. It's not as bad as, say, an artist deciding to draw the yellow oval around Batman's symbol in the middle of an in continuity story arc where it's already been established that he's wearing the Year One style bat. The way Pat Lee is drawing the Transformers, he isn't held to any continuity because Dreamwave hasn't established any before this, he has (basically) free reign. Also, I don't blame him because sometimes the toon versions looked better than the toys, and vice versa. Pat Lee wants the best looking comic he can produce, so he will go with the designs he favors best. That's what it comes down to. I don't understand why this is even a concern, but hey, to each their own :)

However, Newsarama already stated that the Profile Books are being refitted into an eight issue project. Transformers More Than Meets The Eye Official Guide #1 is coming out in April so this finite series should conclude in November, 2003. There's pretty much no chance of a Hardcover containing this material being available this year.

Take a close look at the new covers for the series. Notice that the arms of the featured Autobots are in the same position, as if their hands are shackled. Notice too that Bluestreak is missing his missiles, as if he's been disarmed. Standing guard around them are Dirge, Ramjet, Thrust, and...(drum roll)...Ultra Magnus!!!
Yes, it looks as if Magnus is the "traitor". But we all know Magnus would not turn against Prime unless he felt there was a good reason. I think he follows the new utopian leader because he brought peace to Cybertron. He probably thinks Prime will get a fair trial and be found not guilty. In the end, he will understand the folly of his ways, and probably turn the tide. I mean, he his Magnus, after all.

Where is the greatest transformer-Hot Rod? He was is the coolest one, and i hope to see him in the comic book soon. Also thew Armada series is ok. The War Within so far has been my favorite by far. Generation 1 vol.1 is overrated. I didn't think that there was enough to it. I also didn't realize that it was a miniseries either until after the 3rd issue. That was a real buzzkiller for me. I like Dreamwave's ideas ,and i collect all their titles except Fate of the Blade. They will always have me as a supporter in all they do. They just need to be more punctual in their deliveries. I like this new idea for vol.2. Maybe this time there will be more to this volume than the first.

I didnt think much of the story from G1 Vol 1, let's hope Vol 2 can give transfan's somthing good for a change (war within is hot though!)!

I am a BIG Transformers fan. I have over 400 figures from the US and Japan, I have practically every book published on the figures and the characters, I am even in the process of putting together a coffee table book on them. When Dreamwave got the license to produce the comics, i was excited and annoyed. Excited, because they were coming back, annoyed, because I had been trying to acquire the license and couldn't get anywhere with Hasbro. Needless to say, I like what comes out of Dreamwave, for the most part and thought if anyone besides myself could get this party started, it was them.
The Art was great on the first couple of issues, the writing was ok, but not what I thought they were capable of. It seemed like they weren't writing to their potential. Then, as issues 3-6 came out I noticed something. There was less atention paid to the artwork on Lee's part. Most noticeably on Optimus Prime. Suddenly, he didn't have his normal windows and his truck mode looked just silly, like Pat had never seen a truck before, much less Optimus in truck mode. When he transformed into a robot, apparently he also transformed his windshield. It almost looks like he is wearing a BRA now. What is the deal? Are we entering that stage of the game, where, like Image Comics in their early days, Dreamwave feels that they can just put anything out on the shelves and it will sell because they are superstars? Let us remember what happened to Image in those early days and the market right after, once people stopped allowing themselves to be treated like idiots. Let us rmember the growth we have experienced as an industry since then. Let us also remember that people have to PAY for these books and want to see art from a creator who loves the material as much as the readers. I already see in the G1 Vol.2 preview that this new design for Optimus is sticking around. It might make drawing him easier, but let's not take shortcuts, Pat. You guys have been blessed with an opportunity to land your names in the annals of POP CULTURE history. don't take it, or the fans for granted. I'll even send you an Optimus figure for reference if you need. Just get it right.

So far, I don't like the way DW draw Magnus especially the chestplate in both the preview as well the lithograph. The chest plate on the litho. was horrible!!! They should follow the cartoon. I understand, DW tried to imitate from the diaclone line, space ship on Magnus chestplate...but still...they need to tone it down especially the front of the space ship (the part that's lower to his waiste) not expanding out in the horizontal direction.
Also Magnus elbow join should be white and not blue like the preview.
Last but least...I'm hoping Pat doesn't give Magnus a trapezoid or diamond leg like Prime...gosh..TF leg should be rectangle.
Despites some of those minor flaws....I can't wait for Vol.2...and will always support TF comic book.

this gen1 story sounds like it'll be amazing. the first one was amazing, slightly dissapointing during the climax but still worth every penny. i wonder if weeljack is dead. i sure hope not since he's supposed to die in the tf movie during the decepticons attack on autobot city. having him dead now would really screw up what story we know. still, no matter what happens, i know dreamwave will make transformers an awsome read...again! :p

Yeah, if you look closely, they are shakeled, but i don't understand why Ultra Magnus would do that, unless he is the new leader of cybertron, wouldn't that be cool?
And on the preview covers Megatrons got his combiners, when do the Autobots get to pull out theirs? SUPERION CAN NOT BE DEAD!

Ultra Magnus is a bit of a drip he was inefectual in the cartoon & inefectual in the comic... I don't hate him but he's not half as cool as Say 'Springer' for example.
I agree with pat it would be dumb to drawn Ratchet & Ironhide like the Diaclone toys.
& Movie Galvatron is oodles more impressive than the "standard" toy design is.. heck the toy does not even agree with the movie as to his personality.
I agree that Pat's Way of drawing Optimu sin the strips is pretty week.. it's clear that that robot mode could not transform into a freight liner the chests all wrong... I sometimes wonder if he gets character scale right too... but that's always been a problem.
