Over the last month Marvel readers have been treated to a 4-page preview of the work of upcoming new AVENGERS regular penciler Olivier Coipel, who joins writer Geoff Johns with March's AVENGERS #65, the first issue in the 5-part "RED ZONE" story arc.

Due to the overwhelming response by readers and retailers, Marvel is releasing even more Coipel preview material, including a 12-page dotComic preview of AVENGERS #65, and a look inside the artist's personal sketchbook, previewing his dynamic new takes on some classic Avengers characters.

"Olivier is going to knock everyone on the ground," said Geoff Johns. "His work is stunning, and his characters - some with new designs – are brilliant. Especially the underdogs like Jack of Hearts and Warbird. It's kind of like Travis Charest meets Humberto Ramos, with a powerful and dynamic twist to it all."

Readers can get a look at more of Coipel's character designs at MARVEL.COM
at <a href="http://www.marvel.com/news/index.htm?page=&article_id=92" target="_blank">http://www.marvel.com/news/index.htm?page=&article_id=92</a>

And the dotComic preview of "RED ZONE" - which chronicles the Avengers
response to the worst bio-terrorist attack in American history - can be read
at <a href="http://dotcomics.marvel.com/lib/launchissue.php?issue=149&wsid" target="_blank">http://dotcomics.marvel.com/lib/launchissue.php?issue=149&wsid</a>

AVENGERS #65, a great jumping-on point for new readers, goes on sale March
26th, and retailers are reminded its Initial Order Cut-off date is January
28th and Final Order Cut-off date is March 6th.

Coipel's sketches look great! I have enjoyed his work on Legion from the start. His art has really evolved over a short period of time. I can't wait for his run on Avengers to begin.

Coipel's art is great. While I'll miss him on LEGION this all looks amazing.

I wonder if all redneck Avengers readers will drop the book once a black French guy becomes the artist :-)

they look so cool. especially Warbird and Scarlett Witch.

I'm glad Coipel is taking a page from the Ultimates in the way he's approaching character design. i never could understand why Warbird and Scarlett Witch always wore those skimpy, Flashdance-era outfits. it's far more likely they would wear what Coipel has them wearing. just one of those areas where i couldn't suspend disbelief.

i'll pick issue 65 up just because of the character redesigns... and from what everyone is saying, i'll stay for the fantastic stories.

*jaw falls off, lands on the floor, and scurries away, doing a happy Snoopy dance* OH...MY...GOD...

Ok, today I come out of the closet and admit...I am THE biggest, freakiest, fanniest of the fanboys, because I am in LOVE with these new designs for the Avengers! "Outrageous" Ollie Coipel, welcome to the House Of Ideas, my friend, make yourself at home! Mike Mine Marvel, Excelsior, and all that other Stan Lee baloney! Ant-Man rocks!

However, not to be a jerk, but I would like to address this:

Look, I was weened on reruns of The Jeffersons, All In The Family, etc.., but honestly, dude, what was the point in bringing this up? It was never mentioned in the article that Coipel was black or French. Hey, I'm not pissed, but just thought I would point it out and ask what the point was in bringing up the man's race and nationality, while taking a stab at "rednecks".

Honestly, while I think Coipel is going to be really great on Avengers, I'm not that excited over these costume designs. Jack of Hearts has changed before and then gone back to the original.

The one thing that was interesting to me was the Captain Marvel sketch. So he's joining the Avengers? I guess he'll be getting over his lunacy in his own book soon.

I don't really like how Warbird and Jack look.

Aren't these kind of new designs that later cause things like Heroes Reborn to happen as well as 'back to basics' approaches?

WOW!!!!

I'm so there for Copiel!

Lovey art.

Hate the redesigns for Scarlet Witch and Warbird, though. Yes, I like the "Flashdance" outfits.

Still, gotta give props where due - lovely art.

Not just because I feel there's nothing wrong with either approach of "modernizing" things or taking them "back to basics", but I don't really see this as an attempt to evolve the Avengers, based on what Geoff Johns has said about his intentions. I think these new designs are just meant to mirror the stories he and Coipel will be telling. Hence, Captain America, Vision, and Thor remaining in their traditional garb. They don't require change, as they are universal as far as the threats they can face. For stories involving terrorists, I'm sure Johns and Coipel wanted to go for something a bit dirtier and organic for the heroes who weren't so universal or iconic. This isn't like that lame-ass attempt to Liefeld-ize the Avengers, made during the Bob Harras era when Mike Deodato was the artist. I think there's a deliberate intention here to have the look of the comic be perfectly in sync with the story, without crapping on what shouldn't EVER be touched (such as Cap, Thor, etc.). Hey, I love the classic Scarlet Witch costume just as much as the next person, but I can see the desire to amp it up a bit for these new stories. You never know, they might even grow on you (they already have for me! I love Jack and Ant-Man!)It's just my opinion, though, hope I didn't tick anyone off :)

I think these designs look great especially the Wasp and Ant-Man. I would love to see an avengers cover with the Wasp or all three members of the "Pym" super-family. I wonder if Yellowjacket is getting a new costume as well.

As for those that poop on new designs, a little change is good every once in a while. If we never had any change, Robin would still be wearing pixy pants. But what do I know? I liked the black Spider-Man costume from the 80's. Too bad it turned into so many silly symbiote stories.

When I heard Coipel was going to re-design the costumes of the Avengers, I thought he was just going to give them a minor update, just a touch-up here and there.

How wrong I was.

The new costumes look amazing. Jack of Hearts' appearance, especially, has improved in my eyes. Truly impressive work.

~Icewing, a good day to be an Avengers fan

I like it. The designs look great as does Coipel's art. Looks a bit like they're ULTIMATESizing the costumes. And that's fine by me.

I've also visited the South in the past, and have definitely been a witness to the racism that is around every corner. But that's another topic for another place, I was happy to get your side of the story and your intelligent explanation of why you said what you said. Thanks for having a level head :)

Now, back to the Coipel stuff, someone mentioned Yellowjacket, and I've just realized we haven't seen a redesign for him, either. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Coipel does with him. Personally, as nice as the rest of the work Gary Frank did on the two issues he produced, I HATED...HATED...HATED his Yellowjacket. I can understand there was an intention for him to look a bit more realistic...but those scrawny arms looked so asinine. I had to stare at my Bowen Yellowjacket mini-bust for an hour just to wipe the memory from my brain <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I'm looking forward to Coipel's Avengers work. It'll be great to have a rising talent like him to reinvigorate the series. I like his Wasp redesign very much. I prefer the current Warbird and Jack of Hearts designs though. Coipel’s Warbird design is especially “manga-ed out.” What are all the pouches for? I can’t think of anything that the character needs to tote around – Carol’s not back on the sauce and carrying a mini bar around with her, is she? :p

I've been preaching this guys work for the past 4 + years while he has been doing the single most CLASSIC run in all of main stream comics on The Legion. I mean how many artists have been on the same book for that long. If you look at the his work was on Legion Lost & now on Avengers it is stunning how much he has grown & I said it when Legion Lost came out & I'll say it now, he WILL BE the NEXT Jim Lee, Madurera, McFarlane(although I HATE him) etc. insert name of elite artist that has everyone talking & wanting on their book.

Short of it - I didn't see it "manga-ed" at all...it's not like Coipel's turned her into a giant robot or anything...

Why do artists who take over a book constantly change the characters' costumes???? ( X-Men artists are an ideal example. The new costumes are hideous ...Archangel's ..... ugh ).

All these pockets and pouches and straps that serve no purpose look ridiculous. I admire Coipel as an artist but PLEASE don't redesign almost everyone from the ground up. AntMan, Jerk of Hearts, Scarlet Witch and Warbird's new looks reek. And is Thor back to his old look again or was this just a training illustration?

The Crossing and it's overly complex nature, drastic lose of readers over comics in general and "Marveloution"s failure caused that.

Those costumes were great on the most part, quite a radical departure in most cases as well. Hawkeye and Thor were among my favourites.

These costumes all look fairly radical, cept Antmans, which just looks damn good. Although Jack of Hearts looks a bit like Gambit. And I hate him enough already... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

What's the deal with all the buckles, straps and armor on Warbird? She doesn't need all that crap! And one more thing. Don't screw with the classic Jack of Hearts look! Don't they ever learn over at Marvel? Other than that I kind of liked the stuff and I'm not a fan of Coipel's art.

When I asked him before (on another thread around this site ran the first Copiel/Avengers sneak peek) he claimed he'd wait until the first issue hit the stands before commenting.

Or something like that, us old folx forget things!

Anyway, read the first 12 pages on-line and the art is good, too bad I'm not much interested in terrorist stories. I mean what's the point of (super)heroes if they don't actually fight the big threats? Can't the Marvel Universe military actually handle any ordinary threats?

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but the new style of letting the superheroes have it easy in the Marvel Universe just isn't cutting it for me anymore.

Oh well, saves me more money...

i actually like the designs. I like the new look for the scarlett witch. All of her other looks didn't look like they could protect her from half of the stuff she faces on a regular basis. I like the Warbird costume, in my opinion it looks cool. Antman sort of looks like the design for antman in the old cartoon series. All of the others look completely cool too.

Actually I dig the new looks. Especially Warbird's new outfit. It fits her heroine name better than the old Ms. Marvel costume. The new outfit looks "military-like".
