The first Runners story arc heats up with the action-packed, 32-page second issue from Sean Wang, the writer and artist of Tick and Arthur. Runners: Bad Goods #2 continues the new sci-fi adventure series that follows the exploits of a group of alien smugglers who must complete their run while hounded on all sides by pirates, bounty hunters, police and the occasional conscience.
The obstacles keep stacking up against Roka Nostaco and his ragtag crew of alien smugglers. They may have kept their cargo from being hijacked by a mercenary band of pirates, but their real troubles are just beginning. As the pirate Hamron the Handsome plots revenge, bounty hunters close in on the unsuspecting runners. Unaware of their dire situation, Roka and company make a detour to an old secret base where they'll have to deal with an unexpected intruder that awaits them. But first they must decide the fate of the mysterious and unconscious young girl found on the freighter's cargo bay floor!
"The story just ended up being too much for a 24-page book," says creator Sean Wang, "so I just decided to make issue #2 a 32-page special sized issue for the same price. It's got a little bit of everything: a space dogfight, a gun standoff, a new character from Roka's past. There's even a flashback that shows how a really bad run destroyed Roka's old crew." In addition to the longer story, the issue also features a sketchbook section and pin-ups by other comic creators.
Runners: Bad Goods #2 arrives in comic stores July 2003 from Serve Man Press, $2.95 (U.S.), 32 pages, full color cover with black-and-white interiors.
