Starbucks may have you covered for #1, but we’ve got the robot. Devil’s Due has provided Newsarama with a fully lettered preview of Voltron #0 and #1, both due in stores in May from Image. Both are written by Dan Jolley, with art on #0 (as previously announced) by Dreamwave, and art on #1 by Mike Norton and Clint Hillinksi.
Newsarama previously previewed issue #0 (minus letters) here, by the way. Now – you can “hear” what’s happening.
The Devil’s Due/Image soliciations for the issues read:
Voltron #0
Fans will recognize the familiar characters, but now writer Dan Jolley and artists Mark Brooks and Clayton Brown introduce these characters with origins never before seen. Find out how the five maverick pilots were chosen for the mission to bring back the legendary war machine called Voltron ... and how a distant alien princess knew they were coming.

Voltron #1
In the far future, with the galaxy divided between interstellar superpowers on the brink of war, a desperate officer of the Earth-based Galactic Union sends five maverick pilots on a bizarre mission: bring back the legendary war machine called Voltron. Journeying to the distant planet Arus, Keith, Lance, Sven, Hunk and Pidge discover the first clue in the centuries old mystery - a clue in the shape of a huge mechanical lion.

Any chance of us seeing the "vehicle" Voltron? What about that damn 3rd Voltron? Remember when the toys were out and on the back of the cases it featured scenes from all 3 Voltrons; the "Lion" Voltron, the "Vehicle" Voltron and then there was a 3rd Voltron which I never saw on tv which was "3 robot" Voltron which combined into one. Can anyone shed some light unto that 3rd Voltron?
I would also like to see Vehicle Voltron somewhere in the comics. But since we have Hawkins recruiting the Lion Voltron Force, we already have the makings of a crossover from the very beginning.
Voltron II from Matchbox was taken from the Japanese show Albegas. From what I have been told, a pilot episode was put together for this third Voltron series, but it never went past that. If this title is huge and we get Vehicle Volton in, maybe that will lead the way for introducing Gladiator Voltron. I always wondered why Matchbox numbered Vehicle "I", Gladiator "II", and Lion "III".
Thanks for the preview. I can't wait for these to come out.

Yeah, why stop at the vehicles? I wanna see the robots, too!
If the Voltron comic follows the show, I hope they don't "americanize" it. I never really noticed that much as a kid, but when watching Voltron on Toonami, it was really cheap how they made Sven talk when he was DEAD! Lotor (my favorite character in the show) was also supposed to die at the end. But nooOOOoooo...

I may be wrong about some of the Japanese names.
Voltron was originally marketed in America as a Trilogy of giant robot cartoons (like Robotech). The original promotional ad (sent to TV stations they wanted to carry the show, not shown on TV) featured three Voltrons. These three voltrons came from three completeley different Japanese shows. I'll list them and their japanese counterpart below.
Vehicle Voltron: Space Armored Fleet Dairugger XV
Lion Voltron: Golion God of Beasts
Unknown Voltron: Not sure of the show, but he had a lion on his chest (think Predaking from Transformets).
Now, this third show never got ported due to low popularity of the second season (vehicle vooltron). WEP ordered more Lion Force shows to be made just for them instead (accounting for the slight animation variance). Now, the toys were another story. They uesd three Voltrons as well that were labeled I, II, and III. They were:
Voltron I: Vehicle Voltron
Voltron II: Robot Voltron
Voltron III: Lion Voltron
I do not know why they chose these numbers, but II is obviously the missing link. Voltron II was based on the japanese cartoon called "Lightspeed God Albegas" (cool name!). This show featured teenaged pilots who each had a robot (Alpha, Beta, and Gamme, thus AlBeGas). The interesting thing about this Voltron is that it had variable configurations depending on the powers needed (i.e. different robots could each be the torso and head). I'm not sure why there was a variance from the toys to the cartoon, butin all, that makes FOUR distint Voltrons. For continuity's sake though it's better to just count two. Personally, my favorite is still Vehicle Force, though I know this is not popular opinion. As a kid, I liked the Lions, but after finding a few Vehicle Force tapes, I like them much better. Hope that helps anyone who wants to know.

You have to give credit to dreamwave on this. We have giant robots from them again but this time they present us with a visual style completly different from that which they use for Transformers, definatly a good move. And hey the kept the classic show look AND they updated it, really nice looking book, hopefully THIS Voltron will have a story too.

Turned out that Pidge and Chip were brothers. How did that one play out in Japan?
And back on topic, Unlike Dreamwave's success with Transformers, it doesnt look like these guys are trying to maintain the look from that show that made the characters popular, so I'll have to give this one a pass.

It was ordered by World Events Productions, the American company who brought these shows to the states. It's just like Robotech II: The Sentinels. They were still animated overseas, but you'll notice some changes (like the color of Lotor's gloves). Hope that explains it.

To me these guys only have a passing resemblance to the animated characters. Maybe I'm being anal, but they just don't look "anime" to me. It's funny. The anime look is creeping its way into superhero comics (where I just dont think it works), while a book which should really look like anime does not.
And btw I didnt notice that the shots were from the pre-split Voltron. In fact I didnt even notice that he was drawn with human hands! (Isn't that a mistake as well? I could have sworn that the sentient Voltron had lion shaped hands as well, mighty coincidental considering his eventual fate, but that's not the first time a prescient plot device was used).

Hmmm...I like Voltron but I've been painfully underwhelmed by every 80's nostalgia title. They remind me of the early Image titles except the art isn't as good and the writing is just about as bad but the coloring is top notch.
I might have to pass based on these previews. The story seems pretty run of the mill and cliched "gathering of heroes" with cookie cutter personalities (or lack there of) and the art from Issue #0 and #1 is dramatically inferior.
I have to agre with jerkyboy here. I was expecting the artists to stay true to the characters' appearance from the TV show, as Top Cow has done wonderfully with "Battle of the Planets." The only characters I recognize are Hawkins (barely) and Hunk (because of his size). I really wish they would change their minds and make future issues differently. I enjoy Voltron so much that having these characters look like this could very well keep me away from the book, if that makes any sense.
And yes, Brian, you know WAY too much about Voltron. I thought I was the Voltron geek! :)

I've always found Transformers boring. I thought the Masters Of The Universe were way too campy. I kinda, sorta liked Thundercats back in the day. But ultimately I didn't buy any of the recent comic book revivals of those franchises.
This I'm buying. I love Voltron!
Someone here posted the art looked flat? Dude, seriously, what have you been smoking? This art is gorgeous! I'm an avowed Marvel/DC guy who hasn't collected anything outside of those 2 publishers in years--and I'm very impressed with what I see here. Though I am disappointed we don't get the individual Lions (yet?).
I truly believe the comics industry hasn't been this diverse, fun and interesting in years and I'm squeezing everything (Voltron, Solus, Queen & Country, Rocket Comics, etc.) I can into my budget. Hell, lately I'm really pushing it financially with all the books I'm collecting which I almost can't afford. But it's been so exciting to see all the choices we have now that we haven't had since the halcyon days of the late 80's/early 90's. Frankly, Voltron looks like a real winner.
Um, one question, though... Voltron is going to be monthly? Not another mini-series like the Wildstorm books, right?
P.S. Now, if only someone would do Infra-Man as a monthly series! Say, anyone here know if Infra-Man is available on VHS or DVD?

Bah. A pox on Vehicle Voltron. It's all about the lions, baby.
I have nothing else. Ummm... I'll be getting Voltron, though I purposefully didn't read the previews printed here - call me old fashioned, but I prefer to read my comics on paper. :)

Mark

He's only touch the surface.....^_^
There's more to Voltron than what he has posted; and there are some "wrong" info.
Voltron I (Vehicle Voltron) : Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV (Space Armored Fleet Dairugger XV )
Voltron II (Gladiator Voltron) : Kousoku Raijin Albegas ( Light Speed God Albegas - and he had no "lion" on his front chest ) pics found here: http://www.arus.org/albegas.html
Voltron III (Lion Voltron) : Hyaku Ju Oh GoLion ( King of a Hundred Beasts, GoLion - Not "god" . The Kanji for Oh = King)
As for why "no voltron II" ever aired? Simple.
Albegas of the three series in Japan only aired 48 episodes (airing from 3-30-1983 through 2-8-1984), 4 shy of the normal 52 episode seasons for a series in Japan (actually that would be considered 2 seasons). Response to Albegas was not favorable to japanese audience, signifying the end of what was known as the "giant" robot age in Toei Animation ; and in partial response to Toei's budgeoning Live Action Sentai and Tokusatsu programs which were much more enticing to young audience members.
WEP at the time of trying to introduce Voltron the "show" used part of Albegas in a promo-video, but used mainly footage from Golion and Dairugger to sell the series ( I have the promo tape btw ).
Also, Albegas was also very VERY hard to try incorporate into the two other shows "timeline". Albegas was portrayed as being of the 198x, whereas Golion was in 199x (World War III destroyed the Earth) and Dairugger had no "date". Since Golion took place on another planet, it was easy to say "this planet is behind the times but they have an awesome defender". Albegas' action all took place on Earth, and as Golion and Dairugger was being tied in together (easily) it would have been quite difficult to meld in Albegas against the Galaxy Garrision of Dairugger XV (Albega's environment was reflective of Tranzor Z).
And the main reason? If anyone has actually gotten a hold of several episodes from this series, the "sexual" ineuendo in the series alone would have had censors reeling over Voltron (many a scene within the episodes have the two male characters taking jabs at their female teammate). At a time when stay at home moms were plaguing their congressmen with "there is too much violence on tv", Voltron was one of those series targeted for "censorship". In a time of Cabbage Patch kids and My Little Pony; Transformers, GI JOE and Voltron were subjected to these "worry warts" of parents.
As for the crossover, it was commssioned by WEP using a Korean Animation company to get that one done, and also the 2nd seasn of episodes, were animated by Toei and the same Korean Animation company. None of which were aired in Japan.
Sorry, me know too much as well.

The Issue #0 art looks great! Hunk is really a hunk in that one.
Then looking at issue #1 and it looks so lackluster.
And what's the deal with the single robot that became five? Maybe it's just me getting old, or editting playing tricks on me... but weren't the Lions built first and their joining became secondary?
Actually no.
Canon of Voltron was that Alfor built Voltron to defend Arus against the forces of King Zarkon and Doom. Zarkon suffered many a defeat against the might defender until he enlisted the help of an evil witch named Hagar. She disguised herself as a goddess and lured Voltron to her, then set a curse upon him, splitting him up into 5 separate lion ships; hiding away in the deepest places on Arus. Without its defender, Arus was easily 'overcome' by Zarkon's forces.
Blah blah as to how Voltron was discovered on Arus since that was explained via the Space Explorers.
Then, scientists on Earth upon the re-discovery of the Lion Voltron, used the technology to develop their own, Vehicle Voltron, to be used as a exploration group to find a new suitable planet to live. Hence the series Vehicle Voltron. VV was created after Lion, and the series of VV took place around the middle of Lion Series (episode #35 or so) and continued from there. Some info also eludes that VV happened 5 years after LV series, but that's hard to "swallow" since in the LV series 1st season, in the later episodes, we see Pidge correspond with his adoptive brother Chip of VV.
Holy crap, Arus. I thought Brian was bad! :) Very interesting information, though.
Since we have Colonel Hawkins in the first scenes of the Lion Voltron story, he's obviously been a major player at Galaxy Garrison all along. He's recruiting the members for the Lion Voltron Force, and probably has a major hand into the conception of creating the Vehicle Voltron Force.
Having Hawkins is an excellent show of continuity and connection between the two series. I bet we're going to see Pidge saying goodbye to his brother Chip as he leaves Earth. Maybe even having Chip say, "boy, would I love an opportunity like this some day." I live for that kind of stuff. :)
Does that me bad, too?

Arus, YOU are the ultimate Voltron geek. I thought I had some of those Japanese names wrong. Thanks for the info and I'll be sure to check out your site. Do you know anything about the mystery Voltron I heard about (with the lion on his chest). I've seen him before, but I don't know what series he was from. I'm sure it was from Toei and their numerous giant robot shows. I had heard it was on a promo tape. Any info would be helpful.

Is the comic going to follow the american or japanese backstory?
In the original japanese version, Voltron started out as a sentient robot, along lines of a transformer, but was seperated into the five lions when he challenged what seems pretty much like god, or rather a god, for his pride.
This obviously didn't get into the american release of the show, and i was just wondering which continuity they'd follow.

Not much covered under English, but it seems it was a big draw for Euprope/Italy. Many of the information I found was in Italian.
Had nothing to do with the Voltron Universe, since WEP never commissioned the series. Just one of the many "giant" robot anime shows that aired in the late 70's ending with Albegas in 1983.
I dont ever recall Daltanius on the promo tape at all.

It'll follow the "american" version, not totally, but the principle presented in the American version. There were some changes made because what was presented in the cartoon was convincing to 10 year olds, but just wouldn't hold water for adults (and yes I agree with that).
If anyone wants to know a little trivia here:
Hunk's name in #0 is derived from his Japanese anime counterpart ( Seidou Tsuyoshi )
And Kogane that Hawkins is referring to in the sample pages above is Keith, the name taken from his Japanese counterpart from teh anime as well ( Akira Kogane = Dan stated that Keith's name is Keith Akira Kogane for the comic).

That's the guy, right there. I had read somewhere that he was part of the promo, but since I have never seen the promo, it could have been misinformation. Thanks for filling me in on that. I appreciate the info.

Speaking of giant robots with lions on their chests, how come nobody has brought King of Braves Gaiogaigar out over here?
Its only like, legendary. Not to the level of a Gundam or the Go Nagai robot shows, but its still mighty huge...
Oh, and I mostly hated Lion team Voltron as a kid.
The fights were all small fry, and virtually every battle was won with the Blazing Sword.
Vehicle team had STARFLEETS and other cool bits like that, and their Blazing Sword wasn't used half as much.
I was SO excited when Trendmasters brought out that Die Cast Lion Voltron, then my enthusiasm dropped when I saw the Vehicle team was not showing up.
