The publisher has provided Newsarama with a metric ton of preview art from both, as well as Monster Club. A ton. Really.

Seriously – click <a href="http://www.newsarama.com/AP_new.htm" target="_blank"> here</a> for a six-page preview of each, as well as a Monster Club cover gallery.

First off, Darkham Vale, created, written, illustrated, and colored by Jack Lawrence is a ten-issue maxi series slated for a debut at this year’s Comics 2003 Festival in Bristol, where AP will offer a first look preview edition of the series, and Lawrence will be appearing. The preview can also be found in Monster Club #4, which ships this month. The firs issue will ship in July.

“Jack’s art is some of the best I’ve seen come out of the UK for quite a while”, said Richard Emms, director of AP Comics. “He has the ability to work for any of the big name publishers – lucky we found him first! Mix the talents of Don Bluth and Mike Wieringo and you have Jack’s style. Fans of books such as Bone, Tellos and other titles will warm to Jack’s great storytelling abilities.”

Darkham Vale ships with a card stock cover, monthly, and is priced at $3.50.

The second of AP Comics’ titles is Assassin School, and was created in-house – written by creator Phil Littler, with art by Edu (<a href="http://www.newsarama.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t=00003 8" target="_blank"> Legacy</a>, Victory) Francisco. The title is slated to debut the same month as Darkham Vale, and will run either three or six issues, depending on AP’s other commitments as well as sales.

<a href="http://www.newsarama.com/AP_Comics/ASS_cover1_ink.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.newsarama.com/AP_Comics/ASS_cover1_ink_t.jpg" width="195" height="295" border="0" alt="inked cover to Assassin School #1" align="left"></a> “We’ve been looking for a suitable artist for Assassin School for quite a while now”, Emms said. “Edu did a Monster Club backup story for us in issue #2 – and the response we received from fans and retailers was truly phenomenal. So we had to hire him.

“Assassin School will appeal to fans who like the Danger Girl style genre. In fact, mix the girls of St. Trinians and Marvel’s Elektra – and you have Assassin School”.

Assassin School is priced at $3.50.

Last but not least, Monster Club continues apace, with issue #4 due this month. According to Emms, while initial orders are in line with expectations given the market, AP has seen significant action on the series in the reorder market. The series has also achieved popularity though Borders stores in the UK.

Finally, Emms added that AP will be distributing 10,000 free, 16-page preview copies of Assassin School and Darkham Vale through Cold Cut, Bulldog, and Diamond shortly, allowing retailers to see and sample the new series before they ship.

Have to say that both of these look really cool. I'll definitely pick them up.

If you aren't currently buying Monster Club, you simply must pick it up. It's a really fun read that gets better and better with each issue.

Well done AP, looks like Monster Club wasn't just a fluke. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Hi Everyone!

Firstly I'd like to start by saying a big thanks for Matt Brady - who is really behind our goals as a publisher and promoting APC's books for the past 8 months since we've been in business.

I would like to respond by saying that I don't think that $3.50 is expensive for a full colour indie book that carries the production values that we have. If you check out many Black and White comics that carry a $2.99 price tag - you'll find that not only is the paper stock of lower quality by the page count is also lower.

If you look at the majority of indie books that actually hit comic book shelves you'll find that most are 22 pages of story with ad pages galore.

Also check out books like Marvel's The Truth. A fine book nevertheless - but a book selling nice numbers - carrying a $3.50 price tag.

Our books are 32 pages with card stock covers and full colour throughout. We've even gone to the expense of filling out the book with extra pages such as Edu's back-up story for Monster Club #2, Edu's back-up preview story for Assassin School and Jack's back-up preview story for the Darkham Vale series. All of which cost US money to produce - but at no extra cost to the customer. Plus we've also expanded issue #4 of Monster Club to 36 pages - with no price hike to follow. Also adding variant covers by big names - to make our books collectable. As Joe Quesada said "it is a collector's market as well" (or something like that!).

And because of our books looking like they do - we've had so many creators want to work with us on their own projects - or future projects from within our studio.

My goal as a publisher is to make this business work for us. This means making money to pay creators - and that means, at present, a $3.50 cover tag. If we sold 10,000 copies of each book - yes the cover price would drop.

Ow shit man, don't you worry about the price complaints. It's a given with today's economic conditions and it's a bummer we all have to live with it.

Those preview looks definitely fun, I just have to ask though. You do distribute internationally do you? I'd sure as hell would like to try them stuff you do. I can't buy stuff from the internet for a lack of credit card but I'd seriously try to buy one from my local store if Diamond does offer them outside North America.
