View Full Version : GEORGE PEREZ CANCELS SDCC APPEARANCE

George Perez has announced that, due to medical reasons, he will miss this year's Comic Con International: San Diego. At the mesage boards (http://vu.morrissey-solo.com/moz/perez/news/050610.htm) at George Perez.com, the creator posted:

"As some of you may already know, I've had to cancel my appearance at Comic-Con International in San Diego. The official reason stated on the site "circumstances beyond George's control" has, as I figured it would, started people speculating as to what those circumstances are. I certainly appreciate Comic-Con's desire to protect my privacy, but I also don't want people panicking about my health-- especially with my known history of diabetes. Here, edited to remove any non-pertinent info, is the letter I sent to Sue Lord, Head of Guest Relations for the con:
Sue:

"You cannot imagine how much I hate having to type this e-mail, but, please believe me that I would never do this unless the situation was absolutely dire.

"I'm afraid I will have to cancel my appearance at San Diego this year due to my contracting severe psoriasis, which, in less than a year's time (much to my dermatologist's surprise) has now taken over over a third of my body and has made it all but impossible for me to sleep, work or just sit without being in major discomfort or burning pain. This genetic disease (which I did not know existed in my family line until a couple of months ago) is incurable and what treatments I am now forced to take (pills, creams, injections and possible phototherapy treatments) will require a minimum of 6 months to start showing results, and even then there are no guarantees. I had gone to the movies for the first time in months to see if I could sit through the length of a film without discomfort. I lasted about two hours before the itching and burning started. This made the prospect of a five hour plane flight all but inconceivable. And being in a hotel without my wife to rub lotion on my back or finding a way to use a shower without my skin feeling like it's being sprayed with acid, or having to vacuum the bed every day due to the flaking dead skin that I shed profusely are likewise unpleasant prospects.

"One of the side effects of my current medication is possible mood swings, although it's uncertain whether that would actually be attributable to the drug or the psoriasis itself. Regardless, I'd hate for a fan to be the inadvertent target of a negative shift in temper.

"Thankfully, psoriasis is not not life-threatening, but it is a serious blow to my lifestyle. Never in my wildest dreams would I have figured that I'd cancel an appearance at San Diego, but Mother Nature has really slapped me in the face here.

"Having to deal with psoriasis on top of my diabetes is a major life change for me and these next few months will be hard, but I'm grateful for the good things I still have going for me: an adoring wife, good friends, and a still-prospering career. Hopefully, things will get better by next year should you decide you'd like to give me a raincheck.

"Thank you for everything you and the con organizers have doen to make me feel special. I know the con will even bigger than ever, and I'm really sorry that I won't be part of it.

Sincerely,
George Pérez

"As a follow-up, my wife and I have come up with a therapy regime that has helped relieve the itching and burning somewhat and I've gotten back to work on THE RETURN OF DONNA TROY. Unfortunately, my treatments require that my wife and I be available to each other and, since her job limits her ability to travel with me, I will be canceling all my public appearances for the rest of the year. Right now I have to work to keep my stress levels down and will be following an incredibly restrictive diet and following up on other treatment options. If all goes well, I hope to attend next year's Comic-Con since the organizers have graciously and generously extended a "rain check" invitation, my condition permitting.

"I cannot express enough how touched and humbled I am by everyone's concern. As I said, this isn't life-threatening, but it is life-altering. With the support and kindness of so many people and the love and care of my dear wife Carol, I'm confident that I will be able to beat this thing enough to be able to get out there and thank all of the fans in person.

Take care,
GPz"

It`s weird how many comic-book creators have had health issues.

George Perez is an amazing artist an a wonderful human being. Having met him several times over the last decade at various events, I have nothing but respect and admiration for him, both for his contributions to the industry and his courage.

I wish him all the best, and hope for the improvement of his health.

I second the thoughts expressed about George Perez being an amazing artist and human being. I've had the good fortune to meet him several times over the past decade or so and the man has always been friendly, generous with his time whenever possible, and an all-around great person to know.

It's a shame that George has had to cancel his appearance, but his decision is certainly understandable given his circumstances. All the best wishes for a speedy recovery, Maestro!

I have eczema which is like psoriasis jr. but easily controlled -- with the irritation that I have and how it impacts me the kind of impact Mr. Perez is experiencing must be horrible, especially for someone whose job is to sit and concentrate and create -- the distraction must be horrendous.

Best wishes to you from one who is counting his blessings with the little bit of cracked and flaky skin he has to deal with....

It's reading stories like this that makes me glad George and others in the industry have set up A.C.T.O.R. While I think George is pretty secure financially, other artists might have to struggle to keep up with schedule demands and lose out on potentially profitable show appearances. Next time you are at a show and see an A.C.T.O.R. table, make a donation in George's name.

George is actually on the ACTOR board and does a lot of work for them, including marathon sketch sessions with all benefits going to ACTOR. I bought a gorgeous Starfire head sketch from him at MegaCon this year, and was doubly happy knowing that the money went to ACTOR.

Mr. Perez is a class act. Get well soon. Check out the sketch he did for me. It's posted on the homepage of the GP site.

Really, really sorry to hear about George's health. A while back he had tendonitis (from drawing the cover to JLA/Avengers #3, among other things?) and now this? Sheesh....missing out on all conventions for the remainder of the year...even the fun ones...*sigh*

Ah, well. Get well soon, George ol' buddy! Here's hoping that nasty condition improves before next year's Pittsburgh con, at least!

It sounds like he's got the same disease that Dennis Potter suffered from. Not good at all. I wish him well.

George Perez is not only one of the best talents in the business, but an all-around great guy. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a KC convention in the early 90s. Best wishes to him and his family.

George's diabetes-related health problems, Kurt Busiek's mercury filling issues, Shooter's terminal acne...hell, even Siegel & Schuster's health went to hell in a handbasket for the last 20 years they were walking about! It starts to make me wonder whether it's something in the paper stock that's used to print these damn things that's the cause!

I'm sure that having sedentary careers is a BIG contributor to many of these health problems.

Man, I wish George all the best. He's a great guy and is my favorite living comics artist (after only my all time fave Gil Kane). From this article It sounds like he will not be able to maintain much of a workload in the future... :(

Yea that must be it. I seem to recal also Warren Ellis having being ill a couple times, sabotaging his schedule.

The sedentary element of their jobs, working at home so the microbes stay in, always in the same position, eating badly and so forth must be where the troubles come from.

Psoriasis can be a tough disease. A close friend of mine has it really bad on his feet and hands.

I suggest going to the National Psoriasis Foundation web site www.psoriasis.org and getting all the information you can about treating your disease. There's a lot of different treatments out there that can really help. Advancements in medications and treatments for psoriasis have come along way since the dark ages of coal tar and hospitalization.

Be aware that this IS a 2-year old thread, people! His last scheduled con appearance was for this weekend's appearance in Pittsburgh, anyway (which really bums me out, as I was hoping he'd return to the Heroes Con). Hopefully, I'll be able to see him (for the first time) in 2009 (which is, apparently, when he's due to come back to cons).
