Andy Runton and Owly are two names associated with independent and 'all ages' comics.
I found the combination of the story and Runton's style to be absolutely amazing!
The story is about Owly (an owl, FYI) and a small worm who enter a birdbath contest. Their submission is a birdbath attached to a tree, figuring that birds like trees and birds like water-- ingenuity at work! They go up against some stiff competition, including a very large, ornate birdbath.
For those unfamiliar with Owly, there are very few words in the book. Dialogue between the characters consists of speech bubbles with pictograms of what they're talking about.
This book is truly wonderful for readers of any age. Young children can easily follow along by way of Runton's creative storytelling. Don't be afraid of the 'all ages' label, Free Comic Book Day has taught me that they are some of the best stories.
