Are they using a bigger hall this year? I know the layout is different (last year the entrance was in a corner). I like how they're spreading out the creators along the long side of the rectangle, instead of clustered in the short end.
Indie Island is a cool idea--maybe I'll venture out from the DC/Marvel continent and explore unchartered waters...;) :p

I don't know where it was held last year, but their site indicates there was a need for a larger venue.
Each of those little numbered squares are 10' x 10' booths. If I can't plug holes in my collection here, I don't know where.
As for Indie Island, this is going to be fantastic. I can't wait to meet James Kochalka.

Bought my 3-day pass a couple months ago. It helps when Heroes is your LCS and they hassle you into buying one. (I keed, I keed...I love they guys there, they knew I was gonna get one anyway.) ;)
I know the venue is the same this year, the Charlotte Convention Center, but maybe they're using a different hall. I also want to say, although I'm not sure, that it seemed like that wall near the entrance last year was just a huge collapsable wall (you know, like the ones they use to separate the "party room" at buffet restaurants), and there may have been others in the hall the con was in, so it's possible they've just shifted everything down within the same hall in order to make the entrance more central to the con.
I may ask when I go in tomorrow to get my comics, if I remember.

I plan on going Friday and Saturday, probably with my wife and son on Friday and just my son on Saturday.

This is the first convention convention I've been to.
I've been to ones with about 25 dealers and a few guests (like the Charlotte ComiCon), but this looks friggin' HUGE!

I've never been to a convention. I'm looking forward to this. I went last year and it, too, was my first "real" convention. I was amazed at all the booths. There were some that had clothing & swag up to 25' high (and believe me the tee-shirts are priced a dollar for every foot!:p) I couldn't believe the preponderence of bootleg DVD's--the Corman FF film, the Justice League live-action TV pilot, tons of cartoons. (They were $20 each last year, so I didn't get any.:()DVDs and clothing were the only merchandise that I found to be a bit pricey ($50 for a hooded GL sweatshirt? )
But no matter what you're looking for, you can probably find it. Last year, I was looking for and found old-school DC Blue Ribbon Digests:cool:. I was also looking for some comic-related neckties, but that was the only thing I didn't find (but wasn't really expecting to).
The coolest thing for me was the creators' area. I enjoyed watching the artists do uber-fast sketches and flipping through their portfolios. Dave Cockrum had some cool renditions of Phoenix and Storm that should be posters, imo. Heroes is big enough to get some big names yet small enough that you can actually chat with them. I talked with Golden Age artist Irwin Hasen (and bought a color sketch from him). I also got to have a fairly long conversation with Martin Nodell's son about how his father came up with the idea of Green Lantern and just the comic business in general.
This year I'm definitely going to hang out and watch the artists sketch. I'm a decent artist, but I feel like a snail when I watch these artists. These guys are workhorses. It's amazing to see them produce a gallery-level work in merely minutes.

Yup. I just moved to WI last fall, and this trip is an annual vacation for me and 3 buddies, so I'm coming back to VA for the drive down and everything. It is top 5 lists for 6 hours, then three days of comic goodness, followed by 6 hours back to VA of tired and surly nerds. Fun!
I'm definitely down with a Newsarama meeting! We should do a panel.

Lats year was the first time I had ever gone to a con also. I had a blast. Ron Garney and Howard Porter were great!

I'm really interested that Virgil will be there. On a wrestling website, someone mentioned that he has a way of showing up at comic book conventions and talking about 'old school' wrestling.
I'm really excited about meeting Dave Cockrum, he's the man!

It's so weird...I had a dream about HeroesCon last night. The dream was that it was con weekend, and I showed up later than I meant to, so all the creators were busy and couldn't talk and were all booked up for sketches, and most of the booths were already taken down. I'd completely forgotten about it until I came in this thread.

Yeah, pretty much. I'm already trying to map out a strategy for how I'm gonna hit all the artists I want to get sketches from as early as I can the first day so I can get to them before they get booked up. Adam Hughes was booked up insanely fast last year, and I just missed out on Howard Porter. I was a little disappointed with my Josh Middleton sketch too, because even though I got in in time to get one, he didn't ask what I wanted and when I went back to tell him, he was like "I already did yours. Here's your Jean Grey." Basically like, well, here's what you're getting, like it or not, that'll be twenty bucks. On the plus side, my Mark Brooks and Ron Garney sketches are freakin' awesome. Wieringo wasn't doing any last year, but I got him at Heroes on Free Comic Book Day. Hopefully, he'll be doing some this year, cuz I'd love to get another from him. That's really what I'm most concerned about...I can get stuff signed or hit the booths anytime, but they get booked up for sketches fast, so I'll have to hit the con early on Friday so I can rest easy the rest of the weekend.

I've never been to a HeroesCon before, so how does this work out?
I've been to smaller cons with a few artists and they would just draw as people came up. Is there a 'take a number' system or something?

Well, just based on my experiences last year, most of the artists would start taking down names and requests from people as they came up. They'd cut themselves off when they reached the amount they knew they could handle for the day or weekend. So the earlier you get to the artists you want, the better. It's not that HeroesCon has a system or anything, it's just the artists keeping themselves from taking on more than they can handle.
Of course, I'm talking about the more detailed, paid sketches, not the quick head shots or whatever that a lot of artists will do for free. Like Mike Van Oeming had cut himself off from paid sketches, but he still did a quick head sketch of Walker from Powers for me. Although sometimes the artists even quit doing those if their lines were getting too long. That happened with Ed McGuinness last year. (To be fair, though, I was cheating and trying to double up...I'd already gotten a Superman head shot, and went back later - I think it was even the next day - to get a matching Batman, but he wasn't doing them anymore.) But some guys will do them until the line's gone, like I believe John Cassaday did. I was pretty close up in line, so I'm not sure. No one was even expecting him to do sketches, but he was very gracious and started doing them.
adamcasey
05-15-2005, 05:19 PM
Hrm.
So the thing to do would go for the big names early if I wanted a sketch.
Do I just come back by and be like "Are you done with my Cyberfrog, Van Sciver?"
So if an artist is drawing like a madman with the list of requests, will they stop for a few seconds and sign stuff?
The Amazing Spider-Fan
05-15-2005, 05:42 PM
Yeah, that's about right. Usually, you just drop off your sketchbook or paper or whatever with them when you make the request, then check back later to see how it's coming. They'll even usually tell you when to check back, depending on the number of people before you or whatever. This year, I plan on getting another sketchbook or a pad of sketch paper with removable sheets to leave behind...it got to be a real pain last year trying to juggle one sketchbook between several artists, especially when it looked like two of them would need it around the same time. I'm also considering just bringing a bunch of backing boards and having them use those instead.
What often sets the artists behind, from what I saw, is exactly the opposite of what you were saying, adam...instead of drawing most of the time and taking time to sign here and there, the artists were drawing when they had free moments or when the line was really short, spending more time signing stuff and making sure the bulk of the fans are happy, not just the guy who's paying them 20 bucks for a sketch. I can't really complain about that.

That's about how I felt with my Wieringo Spider-Man sketch at Free Comic Book Day this year. I was really disappointed that he wasn't doing sketches at HeroesCon last year, so there was no way in hell I was leaving FCBD without my 'Ringo Spidey sketch. I was very, very happy with it. And the Brian Stelfreeze Superman is very cool too. Hopefully this year I'll get my matching McGuinness Batman, and I'm very curious if Joe Quesada will be doing any sketches.

I am thinking that this year I am gonna get an all new Sketch Book and devote it to only Superman/Batman and their family of characters. It's gonna cost a shitload of money you're right, but some of the dudes will hook you up with some awesome head shots for free! I think my friend got a Batman head shot by McGuinness for free last year!
So ASF are you gonna be there all 3 days?

Yeah, that's my plan. I even took off work this time so I don't have to leave early on Saturday and Sunday and head to work like I did last year. I felt bad having to rush a couple of the artists to get my sketchbook back in time for me to leave.
I got a McGuinness Superman head shot last year, and this year I want to get a Batman to match it...Superman's facing one way, and I wanna get the Batman facing the other, so eventually when I take them out and frame them, I can have them facing off. If McGuinness is doing other sketches, I'd definitely be willing to pay to have him do something more detailed. I'm trying to amass a bunch of Spider-Man sketches so someday I can have a sort of Spider-Man gallery when I frame them, but I'd love a full McGuinness Superman. Decisions, decisions... :D

Honestly, I wasn't expecting him to be anyway. It woulda been nice, but I won't be crying over it. I was very surprised last year when John Cassaday started doing sketches...I wonder if this year he'll be able to do more than quickies. He was the guest of honor last year, so they only brought him out for short appearances...he didn't have his own table or anything. I don't think that's the case this year, though.

Well, I found out my buddy from Kentucky has to go to his aunt's wedding on the 25th. (Talk about messed up priorities...;)) So, I'll be rolling solo into HeroesCon.
Should we organize a lunchtime meet-up, or simply attend Troy's wedding? (Btw, what time will it be?)

The Wedding will be at 1:00pm as of right now, but that is still subject to change. I am still awaiting confirmation from the Con director!

Why, just work on an A-List title for Marvel or DC!

Yup -- my first three vacation days of the year come Thursday, Friday and Saturday. (Since I work nights and get home around 2:30 or 3 a.m., I always have to take an extra day off in advance of a planned event to try to adjust my body to accepting being active before 2 p.m.)
Can't wait!
(though I am a bit disappointed about a couple of the artist cancellations)

The only Ramazen I saw all day was Shari. Wore my badge proudly, though.
Spent some bucks.
Talked to some enthusiastic, nice, friendly creators and also talked to a couple who made mw wonder why they bother to go to things like this. Sometimes, it's awkward walking past the artists and not really wanting to say anything.
I liked the booth with the huge selection of $5 manga and maybe a quarter as many $5 TPBs.
My son had a great time. So did I, but to a lesser degree for sure. My wife says she enjoyed herself.
Still, I don't think we'll go back tomorrow.
Have fun!

I went today (Saturday) and had a great time. I met ShariB, MattB, cyclopsfan & gcoleman99 (albeit briefly). Even though Matt was running around everywhere doing everything, he still took time to introduce himself (such a nice guy:p)
I was very impressed by the Indie Island. I spent about as much time around there as I did the remaining booths. If anybody is going tomorrow, talk to the guys doing "Doctor Destiny" (nice guys/friends of CapVsBats) and the guys doing "King Arthur vs. Dracula" (one guy is a hell of a salesman). There's also a very nice indie artist from San Antonio, Texas (originally France) that has very nice pen & ink wash notecards. (See, it's not all just comics!:))
cyclopsfan and I went to the Joe Quesada panel led by MattB. It was a really cool & intimate setting--maybe 30 people? And you know what? Joe is so frickin' cool. While Stan Lee may be the carnival/sideshow huckster, Joe is the kinda guy you'd wanna grab a beer with (or pizza;)). He may have been blowing smoke and pushing the Marvel name, but dammit if he didn't do it in a way that pushes all the right buttons. Joe was very patient with some fanboys (one guy went on and ON AND ON AND ON about Captain America needing a MAX title:rolleyes: ) Instead of cutting this guy off, he indulged him.
I talked to Ethan Van Sciver for a brief moment, commenting on his Green Lantern effects (especially John Stewart, of course!:D)
I got both Crisis and my Fisher-Price JLA "Lunar Invaders" book signed by Marv Wolfman. He was very nice and kept on signing despite his hand having a callous on it. (He kinda shook his hands out before I handed him my books, so I naturally asked if they were okay.:o) When he saw the Fisher-Price book, he said, "Y'know, I've never signed one of these!" and smiled. I told him I wished he were writing Donna Troy and he simply responded, "Well, I would, too, but they've never asked.":( Then I told him I liked his column at SBC and he smiled, said thanks and said he did, too, but it became difficult coming up with something every week. I then went on my way.:)

I was there today with my beautiful future bride Firith (Megan) and we had a blast!! I finally got to meet my good friend cyclopsfan face to face, Chris is one excellent dude!! Sorry we didn't get to hang out more today, I just got lost in the crowd dude!! The only other talk@'ers that I ran into were I AM MODOK and Matt and Shari. Let me tell you Matt and Shari are really good people, they just simply are awesome!! We talked with Shari quiet a few times through the day and she held all of our purchases while we walked around which was super cool IMO!! I missed the Joe Q panel because my friend Terence was getting a sketch done and he wouldn't let me go. We hadn't hung out in over a year so we just got lost in conversations and looking for <a href='http://consumeralertsystem.com/cas/zx-hclick.php?hid=64' target='_blank'>books</a> and the day was gone before I knew it.
I got some awesome stuff today though: 7 DC Direct Figures for $66.00 that was a sweet deal!! I got Hush Line Catwoman, Riddler, and Scarecrow, JLA Line Firestorm & Atom, Teen Titans Rose Wilson aka Ravager, and Green Lantern Line Kiliwog!! And they are all KICK <a href='http://consumeralertsystem.com/cas/zx-hclick.php?hid=141' target='_blank'>ass</a>!! I also picked up a couple Superman trades to fill some holes in my collection, got a awesome print of Superman/Batman by Ed McGuinness, a print of Hal and Kyle by D. Bank$, and Megan snagged some cool Naruto keychains and wall scroll, plus and sweet Rogue print!
All in all except for the 2 hour drive with no air conditioner it was a kick <a href='http://consumeralertsystem.com/cas/zx-hclick.php?hid=141' target='_blank'>ass</a> day! I would have loved to have been able to have stayed longer and done more especially the wedding but plans just fell through major with that. Then we blew a flat tire yesterday and had to borrow Megans sisters car, and we had to have it back by tonight. But I'm not complaining it was a good time and hopefully next year it will be even better!!:D

Let me add one other thing. Joe Q's talking about Marvel impressed me so much that after his panel I went to buy Spider-Man: House of M (something I had been considering). I noticed HoM #2 near it, noticed it and #1 were $2 each, so I forked over a total of $6 for HoM 1, 2 & Spidey: HoM. Looks like Joey da Q managed to convince me to do something I hadn't done in over a decade: buy a Spider-Man comic. :)

If anybody is going to be around on Sunday, stop by and say hello, we'll have Newsarama Jr with us on Sunday since he kinda got shuttled around on Friday and Saturday, plus he loves a good con as much as a 4 year old can.

I've been running around all over the con.
I missed the Marvel panel (and Joe Friday's on Saturdays, was that the same thing?) because of the James Kochalka, James Jean, Paul Pope panel (very weird vibe going on there... Paul Pope is intense.)
Invariably as soon as I decide to go one place, I end up stopping at a 3/$1 table and plugging holes in my V run (or picking up the Kool-Aid Man comic "Oh yeah! Oh Yeah!") or chatting up with Ben Towles (a Winston-Salemian) or J. Chris Campbell.
I'll stop by tomorrow though!
Anyone coming, how about a meet-up at 4PM at the Newsarama table? I don't know if anyone'll will have read this by then...

Glad to see so many people had fun at the con...I was there, but I volunteered to help Shelton, Dusty and the crew out, so I was all over the place most of the weekend. I missed the Joe Fridays panel (although I did make a cameo - you may have seen me bringing Joe Q and Matt water in the middle of things ;) ) And yes, it was delayed because Joe missed his flight on Friday.
Let me tell you, having now seen even just a fraction of what Shelton does to put this thing together and keep it running smoothly, my respect for the man (and everyone else involved) has shot through the roof. It was an extremely long weekend for me, and my level of work wasn't anything near what I saw Shelton and Dusty doing. And I don't know how many times I heard creators, vendors, and attendees say how much they loved the show and that, in many cases, it was their favorite show to attend each year. To me, that's the sign of a great show and the highest compliment they could pay.
I'll tell you what, too...volunteering had its perks. I got to meet a lot of people I wouldn't have otherwise, both other volunteers and comic creators. I also had the pleasure of driving the van taking many of the creators to Shelton's afterparty, and it was awesome to see and hear things like Marv Wolfman discussing things like his art collection and what he thinks of Joss Whedon's X-Men with John Cassaday (an awesome guy, by the way), while guys like Mike Ploog and Nick Cardy pitch in and have their own discussions in the background.
Honestly, HeroesCon was the most fun I've had "working" in I don't know how long. Like I said, it was a long weekend, but a great weekend. Anyone who was on the fence about going this year or just couldn't make it, definitely check it out next year. Shelton really goes out of his way to make this con work each year, and it shows.

214 comics. 15 'other' (original graphic novels, slightly bigger, thicker one shots, etc.) A boat load of mini-comics ranging from postage stamp size to the traditional folded over 8.5 x 11.
