slight spoilers ahead

And we thought the first X-Men movie was good.

X2 is a quantum leap better than the first foray of Marvel’s mighty mutants. Take a bow, Bryan Singer. The writing is so sharp, so dense and so damn good that the first movie is Saturday morning fare by comparison. Plus it’s a mammoth 135 minutes that passes like an hour.

The flick, which opens Friday, delivers a multi-layered storyline, scores of action and an ending teaser that is going to have X-fans wetting their pants waiting for the sequel. Storm (Halle Berry,) Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) and Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) shine in this outing, though Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) once again has the lion’s share of the camera.

The special effects are amazing, especially in the opening moments when Nightcrawler “bamfs” his way into the White House and comes close to assassinating the President. The comic to screen translation of his abilities and personality is flawless. This role is going to rocket Cumming along his path to stardom.

The overall plot involves a military scientist named William Stryker (mildly patterned after the evangelist in the X-Men graphic novel God Loves, Man Kills) who has personal reasons for wanting every mutant in the world dead or under his direct control.

Stryker, played by Brian Cox, is more evil than Magneto. He is the embodiment of hate, prejudice, fear and paranoia. He is the worst the human race has to offer. If he has one saving grace, it is that he is not a coward and unafraid to act on his own beliefs.

To that end, he organizes a military attack on the X-Mansion at a time when only a weary Wolverine; young Rogue (Anna Paquin); Iceman (Shawn Ashmore); Pyro (Aaron Stanford) and Colossus (Daniel Cudmore) are in residence with a couple dozen mutant children, including Kitty Pryde (Katie Stuart). What a free-for-all, though Wolverine does most of the fighting. He is far more deadly with his claws, I lost track of the body count. We even get to see Colossus steel up for the first time.

The romantic relationships continue in X2.

Wolverine, back from his journey into his shrouded past, sidles up to Jean and tries to ignite a spark. She does not exactly flee from the notion. Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) another character that has grown since the first film, tries to sneak in a disguised quickie with Wolverine.

Meanwhile, Iceman and Rogue are causing some sparks on their own, even though they can’t touch exposed skin because of Rogue’s power to absorb powers, personality and life force. This could be a relationship dampener.

Also involved with them, though how is not as clear, is their friend Pyro, who can control - but not create - flame. This is a guy with a bad temper and some heavy emotional baggage. He’s the wild card in the X-Men’s entourage. Early on, Stryker kidnaps Professor X, played even more perfectly than last time by Patrick Stewart) and attempts to use him in a grand scheme to rid the world of the mutant problem once and for all.

Stewart has grown into his role, a more human Professor X.

Magneto returns in all his glory as part of the Professor X rescue team after a dramatic escape from his Plexiglas prison. That escape is a high point of the movie.

There are some cool glimpses of future characters, like Dr. Henry McCoy appearing on television defending the mutants; the name “Remy LeBeau” (Gambit) on a computer screen in Stryker’s office and a shrieking young girl who can only be Siryn.

There was an addition to the movie by the subtraction of Sabretooth and The Toad. While both characters worked on a technical level in X1, I didn’t care for them.

In their place is the silent but deadly Deathstryke (Kelly Hu, last seen in The Scorpion King). Hu does wonders with a character that has been kind of dull in the comics. Her battle with Wolverine is epic.

One surprising absence was Stan Lee, who usually does a walk-on in these films. He was not listed in the credits, but it’s possible he’s there in a “Where’s Waldo?” type situation. I’d be interested in hearing if anyone spots him.

If not the first time you see the movie, then the second time. This is a movie you’ll want to see twice.

Sabretooth could have been done a lot better in the original, but I don't know why they've dumped Toad. He was better in the movie than he's ever been in the comics.
My one reservation for this film was Alan Cumming's German accent, but I haven't heard any complaints yet so that should be OK.
A very small niggle: If they are going to have Pyro only able to control but not generate flame, isn't his zippo going to run dry pretty quickly? I know that's how his powers work in the comics, but he has flamethrowers in them.
I hope Gambit just stays a name on a screen, I can't stand the character and don't want to see him in future sequels.

Though he should change that rule for Spidey 2 since cameo was so very short. He deserves something better like in Daredevil.

It's Magneto & the X-MEN united against Stryker.

Plus, Ray Park has other pressing engagements elsewhere I hear, doing some stunt cordination on another film, plus being prepped for IRON FIST.

As for Sabretooth, wait for X3, or WOLVERINE. both are in the works.

Personally, I thought it sounded very good. A lot better than he sounds on the cartoons from the little snippits I've heard.

Honestly, you really won't be able to tell much about the accent until you hear him praying in German, and even then, unless your a German national, there's not to many people that could get to picky. Alan seems to have studied hard during his time in Caberet, and from what little I've heard of him speaking as Nightcrawler does very well considering having to deal with those prostetic teeth.

Gambit has one of the most visually dynamic powers and would translate into truly exciting CGI on the silver screen. Granted, obviously the most striking X-Men visual is the Phoenix effect. Here's to hoping we get both in X3. :)

As I heard it, most of the properties involved from the Aristan deal (such as Iron Fist) were awaiting to see the final take on Daredevil before tossing to much into properties that wouldn't yeild the same return as say, X-MEN or Spider-man due to their lack of mainstream acceptance.

quote:
most probably, but last I heard they're still toying with the idea of a Wolverine solo flick..[/qb]

Again, we are probably getting two different reports from two different people. Believe me, no two people in hollywood can agree on anything, and few of them know a dammy. :)

But at last look, Tyler Mane signed a contract with Fox for 2 movies. Albiet unspecified. Whether its X3 & 4 or X3 and Wolverine or 2 seperate action movies is sort of up to how X2 does.

I know Hugh is being courted with a very high cash incentive for a Wolverine solo movie. (well high for him. He's still somewhat unproven outside the X-MEN franchise.. Swordfish did well, but that was an ensemble piece. The thing he did with Ashley Judd and Meg Ryan however could go either way with some producers)

There are certain blink and you'll miss them scenes all through the movie. Kind of like the "Easter eggs" in X1. Sharp eyes might still see him, or at least the actor that was to portray him. But you are absolutely right the full scene was cut.

Look out for Jackman in "Van Helsing" in May 2004, from Steve (The Mummy) Somers and Universal Studios. I've seen some of the early promotion on aintitcoolnews.com, and it's weird seeing Jackman dressed like Vampire Hunter D (the first movie had crappy animation but a good story; the second was damn brilliant!)

You know what I find kind of interesting? Despite how sorry an excuse Wizard Magazine is on a usual basis, I was flipping through an old issue, way before the first X-men movie was confirmed, and in their casting call section, in which they name the actors they would cast for a particular movie, they pick Alan Cumming for Nightcrawler. Well, and Patrick Stewart for Prof. X, but that one's a no-brainer.

I've said this before and I will say it again: the one thing that is bringing me to this movie is to see Nightcrawler. I wouldn't have cared if I had never seen or liked the first X-Men movie, I'm just so excited to see one of my favorite Marvel characters brought to life and looking as awesome as he does. The action figures they did of him are looking just as cool, too! I have them standing right here on my computer desk :)

As for Gambit, I hate the comics version of the character, too. However, the Wizard X-Men magazine that came out last month had a feature with comic book artists working up designs for X-characters yet to be brought into the movies. Andy Kubert drew Gambit and talked about how he could see Remy and Logan being at odds right away. I think that might be an interesting subplot to work into a third movie, with Logan's role as the tall (or short), dark, handsome, and mysterious type being sort of challenged by this other dude coming in from left field. It isn't the most original idea, but I think Bryan Singer has proven he can work some great magic and I'd be curious to see what he could do with something like this. Plus, if Gambit were an adult, we wouldn't have to be subjected to seeing him hook up with Rogue, which IMHO ruined both characters in the comics (particularly Rogue) and still haunts them today.

I am really looking forward to this movie being released. The thing I've been wondering is; where is the God Loves, Man Kills TPB? I thought Marvel was re-releasing the the GN/TPB with some new goodies added for the movie's launch. There is no news on Marvel's site. Has anybody heard anything?

Slightly OT, but I figure somebody here probably knows the answer to this question:
I recently bought the X-Men 1.5 DVD. I didn't own the original DVD release, so I didn't mind buying the "upgraded" version.
Now, after seeing most of the features, I checked on dvdeastereggs.com to see if there were any hidden features on the DVD. No one has reported any there, but they mention that on at least some of the original X-Men DVDs, there was a hidden extra with a scene in which Spider-Man meets the X-Men. I gather that this scene isn't on the new DVD, and I'm not about to buy an older version of a DVD I already own just for one humorous clip. So I'm wondering if that scene is available anywhere on the Net, and if so how I would find it. Anyone know anything? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Basically, the X-Men are standing in a doorway or something (I forget which scene it was actually supposed to be from) and then this guy in a cheap-o Spider-Man costume walks up behind them. Either Wolverine or Cyclops (one of the two, I can't recall...it's been awhile since I've seen it) turn around to face him, and the goof in the Spider-Man costume says "Oh, sorry, wrong movie" and then everyone on the set starts laughing. It's just a short little blooper, but funny for what it is.

Hmm. Jamie Madrox gets a brief scene in the novelization by Claremont. Sounds like a shoe in for somethng cut (and thus ripe for DVD inclusion).

I'm only halfway through the novelization, but it is miles beyond the book of the first film. That one read like it was transcribed from the released film.

My ultimate dream for an X-Men movie would be seeing Jean Grey doing her Phoenix-Black Queen-Dark Phoenix transformation, although that would involve the Hellfire Club as well as the Imperial Guard and when I spoke with Bryan Singer a few years back, he said he wouldn't go near it because it would be difficult to translate to the screen.

Still, I am waiting for this movie with bated breath and can only wonder what that last scene shocker is...

And it would be impossible to top what they did with that.

That's Gambit's problem here: he's not bringing anything unique, what he does bring is redundant. His attitude is too similar to Wolverine's. A power like agility is already well covered by Mystique and Nightcrawler (as well as Deathstrike but she obviously won't be returning). He's got those red eyes but there were already a half dozen characters with either lenses or special eyewear in X2. His giant hair would still be upstaged by Berry's wig, just like his chain-smoking will be upstaged by Logan's giant cigars (seriously, he doesn't seem to settle anything less than Schwarzenegger-size in these movies) and do you need another heavy accent when there's already a German in the group?

All Gambit really contributes is his...stick. Too bad he can't be in the Daredevil sequel. :D

Hi! I just saw X-2 on its release here in Mexico (and its one of those early world releases, before USA!!)

And I can say.. wow... beyond my expectations, real fun, great action, everyone seems a lot more comfortable in their roles... can´t wait for X-3!!! Oh man.. that ending!

I've seen X2 this afternoon, and all I can say, without giving anything away is:

Everything I loved in the first movie is there, squared. You'll love it!

And maybe with this character, the sequel won't suck like the first one.

Bryan Singer is just getting warmed up. I mean its only the second X-men movie, whose to say there won't be a franchise of movies like the James Bond franchise? All I can say is patience, Gambit will most likely show up soon enough.
