Press Release

On June 23, cable network The History Channel will air Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked, the network's first documentary about comic books and their subject matter. At the same time, the network has teamed up with Diamond to develop a marketing strategy that will draw an enormous level of attention to comic book stores by promoting the Comic Shop Locator Service.
As part of its plans to promote the show, The History Channel has developed an eight-page promotional comic book, and will distribute 1.5 million copies through movie theaters, restaurant chains, and special publicity events. The comic book will contain a full-page ad for the Comic Shop Locator Service.
Furthermore, The History Channel will drive viewers to comic book stores on air during the program and include CSLS information in the show credits, and has also agreed to link to the Comic Shop Locator Service from its website.
In exchange for this promotion of the CSLS, Diamond will be distributing free copies of The History Channel's eight-page promo comic to selected retailers who are signed up for the CSLS, for them to distribute to their customers. Stores that belong to the Service will benefit from the high level of publicity generated by the show, which will be broadcast to over 82 million households.
"The History Channel is taking steps to promote this show and, in doing so, will promote our market both directly and indirectly," said Diamond Marketing Communication Manager Lyga. "This is an opportunity for retailers to be a part of another major national promotional event that will draw attention to comic books and to the specialty market. Like Free Comic Book Day, we expect it to be a success."
The History Channel is one of the fastest growing channels on the air, having begun with one million subscribers and quickly grown to its present size. In 2002, it was named a "World Class Brand" by Equi Trend Survey and was named best promoted brand by Promo Magazine.
"This is an organization that understands promotion and excels at it," continued Lyga. "Now specialty retailers can benefit from that."
Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked airs on June 23; the promotional comics will be delivered to retailers in early June for free distribution throughout the month.

Even if no one goes out immediately and buys their first copy of SUPERMAN, this is a good thing. I personally don't know many people aside from myself that watch THC regularly, but obviously they have a large and growing viewership. Being a history buff, I personally find their programming to be some of the most interesting on TV right now.
As long as THC does a quality job (a given) and gives the medium a fair and balanced look, comics will have been served well.
All publicity is good publicity.

Wow! This is cool. Hopefully we'll get more actual program info before it airs.

This is GREAT news! I love the History Channel. I (of course) am a history buff (kinda goes with being a history teacher). MODERN MARVELS, MAIL CALL, and CONQUEST have got to be the three best shows on TV right now. Always informative, always enjoyable, and they never talk down to you.
BTW, more people watch the History Channel than you think. I'll spread the word about this show.

There must be some higher-ups at the History Channel who love comics. Producing the special show on comics would be nice enough, but they've gone ahead to promote the locator service AND produce a free eight-page comic book...that's going above and beyond the call to action. Good publicity for the History Channel, GREAT publicity for comics.
One question, though. How do I find out if my shop subscribes to the CSLS (other than just asking...I won't be to my shop for another week or so)? It's listed when I use the locator service - does that mean my shop is a subscriber?

I would guess that the History Channel believes that the comic crowd is a good market to market for there shows.

I have to say, this sounds like a very positive promotion to reach out to new audiences. Nice one, Diamond.

And on Friday, June 20, "Hulk" hits the theaters. (Sorry about the pun.) Good timing on THC's part.

Could it be by any chance this documentary? If so, you're in for a great treat.

It's a great time to be a comic fan. I feel like a kid in a toy and candy store, with strippers attending to my every need. :D

What a grand idea. The History Channel is one of the reasons I have cable; they do things in a first rate manner so I'm expecting that this show will be...*ahem* :) ...super.

Cool!-- not only is the comic thing cool, but i hope that special is awesome as well..
Wouldnt it be cool as shit to see a Jack Kirby Biography on the A&E!-- Goddamn it I want that RIGHT NOW!-- Who do I see about that? Imagine, Eisner, Kirby, Lee, Simon and Shuster, all week-- that would be cool! Maybe someone obscure like Wally Wood!

Usually I'd find something to goof on and play like i'm angry, but I have to say, I'd like to see more of this news. I think it's great-- Anything to reach out like this and say "HEY! Comics still exisT!" to moviegoers, TV watchers, radio listeners--

Indications are that it might perpetuate the myth that "comics equals superheroes," and I'm always leery of mainstream reports that conflate the medium with one specific genre.

Of course this is a mighty coup for the Diamond monolith and the industry in general, altho I will echo Elayne's sentiments about equating comics with superheroes. People know about spandex and yes I love them too but how about MORE ? The posting Mr Rich could perhaps influence that a bit or even Gemstone Publishing with their rights to the ultimate non-superhero line of the legendary and still great EC comics ? How about Dark Horse and their heavily licensed and immediately recognizable line up ? Bongo & Archie for the kiddies and kids at heart along with the Cartoon Network titles from DC ? C'mon Mark Alessi ! Let's work that outstanding CrossGen material in there ! That would definitely appeal to the History Channels demographics. Marvel could shout about the more mature items like The Truth or Alias. Vertigo would shine too with Y the Last Man or Fables. Valentino & the Image house ? The mind spins with possibilites.

Still not satisfied? Here's what CINESCAPE had to say!
"The words "uncut" and "unedited" often carry with them the promise of forbidden pleasures, and while there is no excessive profanity to be found in Rich Henn’s new comic book documentary film, SCENES FROM THE SMALL PRESS - MAINSTREAM: RAW (except perhaps for a fewminutes in Grendel creator Matt Wagner’s segment) –
there are also a number of welcome surprises in store for any aficionado.
Henn has interviewed some of the
most influential creators in the industry for a series of films that promises to throw back the proverbial curtain and force us to pay attention to the people behind it.
Boasting appearances by Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada, DC Senior Editor Bob Schrek, Frank Miller, Colleen Doran, Dave Gibbons,
Carla Speed McNeil, the aforementioned Wagner, and
Henn himself, MAINSTREAM: RAW does indeed offer a raw look at the comic book biz that is at once
enlightening, disturbing – Doran’s segment alone lays bare a sad but true dark side of the industry – and inspiring.
Footage from Miller’s now legendary
Pittsburgh convention appearance – yes, the Wizard
speech – is worth the price of admission alone despite Miller’s overworked histrionics, but the rest of the material is equally entertaining, and in Doran’s case, rather sobering as well. Henn is well on his way to providing an essential and eye-opening chronicle of
the living history of comics through the minds and
mouths of the people who have shaped the medium."
– Arnold T. Blumberg, Senior Editor, CINESCAPE

Good for you, Rich!
I think we're one step closer to getting a comic book cable station, airing documentaries like these, re-broadcastings of comic-based movie and TV programs (especially ones that have been off the air for too long) and news programs on the latest in comics.
Imagine watching Newsarama as a high quality local news program every night, or once a week.
I really believe there's enough material to acquire, and enough resources available to produce original material, and enough people interested. Think of it as a hybrid of the Sci-Fi Network and the Cartoon Network with the History Channel sprinkled throughout. At last, something big enough to show the true diversity of comic books!
