<img src="http://www.newsarama.com/Marvel/May_05/t_FF527_COV.jpg" width="150" height="224" border="0" align="right">While they’ve been percolating through the internet since late yesterday, Marvel’s May solicitations officially hit today at noon. As with DC’s solicitations for May, we’re going to cherry pick a little, highlighting the new, the changing, and the things that make you go “What th-?” (No, not that What Th-?!?…just the expression).
Anyway…onward.
May sees the rollover in the Fantastic Four’s creative team as J. Michael Straczynski and Mike McKone join the book, and kick off a new arc, “Distant Music.” The solicitation reads:
Just in time for movie season, new ongoing creative team J. Michael Straczynski (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, SUPREME POWER) and Mike McKone (Teen Titans, EXILES) unite their talents to chart a new course for the world's greatest comic magazine! First up: an intriguing offer for a conflicted Reed, and a windfall for Ben!
32 PGS./Marvel PSR …$2.99
Last week, when Marvel Editor in Chief Joe Quesada interviewed Greg Pak, the writer mentioned he’s been working on something called Marvel Nemesis: The Imperfects, a tie-in to an EA videogame. Wonder no more about what’s going on…
Click here (http://www.newsarama.com/Marvel/May_05/MvlMay05.htm) for the rest of the picking...

I saw a lot of things that appeal to me. Even the reprint volumes sound exciting as they are cheap ways to get good stories, especially Giant Size X-Men 3.
Excited to see the return of the Hellions. I loved them in the New Mutants. And I love the pose of the guy on the middle of the cover. Just screams of arrogance. That's a cool cover.

Big month from Marvel for me...
New Thunderbolts 8 (Great cover...solicit make it sound like a stand alone issue too. Buy this book!!!!)
Captain America 7 (Brubaker and Epting rule)
Astonishing X-Men 11
Excalibur 13 & 14
Daredevil 73
Giant Size X-Men 3 (Good to see Cockrum get some work)
GLA 2

There is some very cool looking stuff coming down the line. It's about time we get a book from the villain's perspective. All of these new book look quite interesting and I am looking forward to checking them out!:D

After reading this and DC's solicits and I realize need more money... Two or three more jobs. Perhaps a substantial inheritance... I have a couple of elderly relatives who'd be much more comfortable on the other side... The security is kinda lax in one of the banks I usually go to... hmmm... :p :D ;) :D

#)(*$)#($)(#*$ MARVEL!!!!!!!!
I'd LIKE to get that Whedon X-men story, but that would mean $5 for what is probably a 22 maybe 30 page story.
Perhaps if it's at least 38 pages I'll relent! (*&#)(*$# MARVEL!
Now, I know how that fanboy of Grimjack felt about the original story in the trade. I have all the other stories, and I won't pay $5 for anything less than a 38 page story! (I base that on 22 pages for $3 which is the maximum I pay for a story I don't own right now!) Since, I own the other stories in Masterworks and originals I don't feel compelled to get another copy.
Ah well, maybe they'll put that story as a bonus in the Astonishing Xmen HC (I'm waiting for it, I know they'll have one, Marvel's not totally insane!)
Anyway, on to the good, what little that actually excited me, looking forward to GLA #2. I was a big fan of El Aguila as a kid, in fact it was the only reason I bought Power Man/Iron Fist (don't laugh, you'd hurt my feelings if I had any!)
Also, looking forward to the change in FF creative team. Waid has been sortof boring me since the Doom storyline and I'm not a Ringo fan. Then again, while I love Mckone, JMS is hit or miss, 2/3rds of his Rising Stars was good, Supreme POwer is okay and Amazing Spidey is not only NOT amazing it's not even an adjectiveless Spidey! Still, a change could be good, we'll see!
Oh yeh I checked out the CBR site, looking forward to this:
AVENGERS: KANG - TIME AND TIME AGAIN TPB
Written by STAN LEE, ROY THOMAS & ROGER STERN
Penciled by JACK KIRBY, SAL BUSCEMA, HERB TRIMPE & JOHN BUSCEMA
Cover by JOHN BUSCEMA
The super-villainy of Kang the Conqueror…unleashed at last! You've seen his true colors in YOUNG AVENGERS; now, see what came before! In a classic contest, the Grandmaster and Kang pit the Avengers against the Squadron Sinister and the wartime Invaders! And when the self-proclaimed "Ultimate Kang" sets outs to conquer his alternate-reality counterparts, only one force can possibly halt his mad march: himself!? Plus: Kang takes on Thor and the Hulk! Collecting AVENGERS #69-71 and #267-269, THOR #140, and HULK #135.
176 PGS./MARVEL PSR …$19.99
That's awesome and unexpected! It has two stories from my two favorite (EVER) periods of Avengers! The period roughly from 1st appearance of Vision/Ultron to the Kree/Skrull war! (and most of that stuff still not traded or masterworked! grrr) The other favorite period of mine was the Stern period (mostly!) Plus, I don't think I've actually read Thor 140 and Hulk 135 so something new!
I see the ManThing trade finally made it!!!!!!!!
And the only bummer is that the FF: George Perez Visionaries trade didn't get solicited. Since, amazon shows it as a June release and they are usually a month or two behind the comic stores, I've a sinking feeling that trade isn't going to happen! I'm going to cry now...

Henry as the new artist of Academy X is a great pick up. Cockrum getting work is wonderful news. The Ultimate Defenders showing up cant happen to soon. The obvious money grab that is The Files of SHIELD is even slightly tempting in that Marvel Handbook kind of way.
Something needs to be done to Excalibur, because exciting things are happening in that book, yet I still dont want to buy it.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #11
Written by Joss Whedon
Pencils & Cover by John Cassaday
"DANGEROUS"
The penultimate chapter to Whedon & Cassaday's first year of ASTONISHING. In this issue...everything comes crumbling down. Part 5 (of 6).
32 PGS./Marvel PSR …$2.99

Oh yeh I forgot to commend Marvel for taking out that "New FF" storyline from the Best of FF HC. (Based on original solicits!)
Since it's supposed to be the Best of FF and the FF were hardly in that trilogy I never thought it was appropriate for that HC. No need to cater to the Spidey/Wolvie fans! They probably wouldn't have gotten the hardcover just for that story!
Unfortunately, their new choices aren't exactly great! FF #100 is a pretty weak story, although it does showcase all of the FF villians at that point (I think it might have missed one or two lamer villians!)
MK #4 is an okay choice I suppose.
Marvel Two In One #50 was fun and at least it's never been reprinted elsewhere.
Still, that only ups the # of issues never reprinted in other trades/Masterworks from 4 to 5. I can't pay $18 (after my discount) just to get 5 issues. Sorry! (Esp. when one will eventually be reprinted in the John Byrne Visionaries and another one in the George Perez Visionaries if it's ever done! And a Two in One tale and Marvel Fanfare issue and a lame FF#116 during the bad FF years that followed Stan Lee before George Perez joined I can pass on!)

Machine Teen looks like it was created to fail. Will it even make it to issue #6?
Secret War is ridiculously late, so they . . . release a "program" of text by a guy who's not writing the series? WTF?
And New X-Men, the series that bleeds readers, gets a spin-off. Smart idea.

Marvel really ought to start releasing their solits before DC, so they're not so much of a letdown. I'd be more excited about Giant Size X-Men #3 if it didn't stand out as the *only* remarkable Marvel book of the month, compared to the many DC releases like Seven Soldiers, the conclusion of Sleeper, the new Green Lantern series, and the Countdown tie-ins.

So it looks like it's true. Marvel's only prominent ******** character goes from senseless victim to mindless villian. Nice job Millar! At least I get two more issues of UFF before he screws that up, too.
Meanwhile, the floundering New X-Men gets a spinoff instead of tightening its own focus and getting back to what made it good before X-Men: Reloaded dumbed it down. And the ridiculous Machine Teen gets a greenlight? Does Quesada hate Pak?!?!
At least New Avengers and Captain America look good, and from the full list, Black Panther (with a striking cover from Cassaday), Runaways and an Essential Defenders look promising, too.

I hope to God that House of M not only restructures the X-Universe, but the X-Men line of titles. I've been a hardcore comic collector for years and X-Men was my fave title growing up and I have absolutely NO idea what's going on anymore at this point. There are X-Men, and X-Forces and Cables and Deadpools and Gambits out the wahzoo to the point I don't know who or what is going on with any of the titles enough to even pick one to check out... All I know is I like Peter Milligan, so I'm giving Golgotha a chance, but for once I understand the appeal of the Ultimate line as at least you know who the X-Men are in that title... At this point, how many X-Men are there? 40? 50? My head hurts...

Nice to see they are going with a variation of Warren Ellis' idea of a trenchcoat rather than a cape.
I wonder what they have in store for Strange now that he's been redefined. He would be an interesting candidate for a New Avenger.
And it's nice to see Marvel giving Dave Cockrum some work, particularly pairing him up with Joss Whedon on The X-Men. A bit of the old and a bit of the new. It would be interesting to see Marvel try this out more often.
Imagine JMS paired up with Ditko for an issue of Strange or Amazing Spiderman.
I'm also curious to see Gail Simone and John Byrne's collaboration over at DC.

You know, I wondered this exact same thing. And since Joe Quesada was acting (note the stressed word there) all nonchalant about Whedon & Cassaday returning for a second year in the Kevin Smith IM interview posted here last week, I was already suspicious that we might get a second year.
So how about it, Joe? Give us the official announcement already...

Can't wait long enough for Cable & Deadpool #15...That is gonna kick so much ass. The name of the arc says it all - " ENEMA of the STATE"! Whoo.
Cool to see Jae Lee doing some Ultimate work. Great artist.
Giant size X-men with Whedon is gonna be a killer... Hell anything Whedon does is brilliant.

Am I correct in assuming Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #28, X-Men Vol. 1 #9, and X-Men Vol. 1 #35 feature the very first meetings between Cyclops' team and the Fantastic Four, Avengers, and Spider-Man respectively? The solicitation for Giant-Size X-Men #3 doesn't draw attention to this important possibility but the dates seem to indicate it.

MARVEL NEMESIS: THE IMPERFECTS #1 (of 6)
An evil scientist sets his crosshairs on planet Earth, in search of test subjects for his experiments, transforming even the most timid creatures into vicious fighting machines. Thousands of years later, the Thing, Wolverine, Spider-Man and Elektra all find themselves unwilling participants in the scientist's millennia-old trials…or perhaps not all of them are that unwilling.
Boy, they really went out on a limb there in picking those characters. Guess I'll be passing on this project. God, Marvel, you have characters besides Wolverine and Spider-Man. Lots of them, in fact.
G.L.A. #2 (OF 4)
With the life-expectancy of hamsters, and an ever-thinning lineup, the GLA is in desperate need of new blood. But what self-respecting super-type would sign up for THIS!? Guest stars galore, including Brother Voodoo, El Aguila, and Captain Ultra. Plus Spider-Man, Wolverine, Daredevil, and all the other spotlight-hogs you can't get enough of! Oh, and don't forget, in this issue ANOTHER GLAer DIES! Well... besides Mr. Immortal.
Well, Brother Voodoo, El Aguila and Capt. Ultra are certainly interesting. However, if there's more than token appearances by Marvel's Big Two, I may not end up getting this. I suppose it'll depend on what I think of issue one.
Wait, Marvel Team-Up doesn't have Spider-Man or Wolverine (or one of their knockoffs)? How the hell is it going to sell anything? Other than the FF/Dr. Strange issue, is this a first? Granted, it does still star yet two more of Marvel's movie stars, but maybe I'll give it a look.
NEW THUNDERBOLTS #8
An old friend asks SPEED DEMON to pull off a huge heist -- will he do it? And does BLIZZARD want to stop him -- or get in on the action? Meanwhile, PHOTON tries very, very hard to remember why he should be mad at ATLAS. RADIOACTIVE MAN gets -- a publicist? And a resignation threatens to tear the team apart before it's even
Well, the cover gives away who the old friend is, but sounds good to me (especially with Monica Rambeau). I kind of like that this group of villains has smaller goals. I think having the dilemma be about robbing a bank -- instead of taking over the world -- makes it harder for the newer TBolts to make the right choice. After all, the can reason, the bank's insured, so if they don't hurt anyone, is it really wrong?
Giant Size X-Men 3 could be good. Whedon and Cockrum? I'm probably in.
Bit confused on the New X-Men picture of them dancing with the mourning scene. Then I looked down and saw they just put the wrong cover there. And I have to admit I'll probably get the Hellions mini. I actually like them more than the New Muties.
I'm really not interested in Cable or Deadpool, but a guest appearance by Siryn and Cannonball might get me to pick it up. I've heard good things about it, and I do like Fabe. Mocking Hawkeye's idiotic death in the most recent issue scores points with me.
Excalibur: Wanda's CRAZY! And EVIL! But why the hell would you bring in Dr. Strange considering he apparently knew she was responsible for everything the whole time but couldn't be bothered to get off his lazy Sorcerer Supreme ass? Or should we just overlook that bit of idiocy?
ROGUE #11
In a desperate bid against Lady Deathstrike and her mystery accomplice, Rogue and Sunfire are forced to do something that changes them both…possibly forever! TRUE BELIEVER ALERT: This issue will have a lasting impact on Rogue, who will soon be seen in X-Men #171.
So should we just have ignored all the previous issues because they have no impact and are irrelevant. I know the marketers are trying to sell more copies of the book, but I'm not sure that's the way to go about it.

Okay, since no one else has mentioned it, I guess I'll have to. Don't y'all think it's about time for Wolverine to ditch that silly silly willy nilly yellow and blue snow-sled outfit and maybe go back to some variation on the brown costume?
I mean, I hated the leather look, and I'm truly glad the costumes are back for the most part, but for Christ's sake...it's really hard to take the hairy little guy seriously at all in that oh-so-bright-and-colorful, super-happy man's oogly little get-up, ain't it bub?
Especially with Wolverine appearing in so many books, you'd think Marvel might want to spare Logan (themselves, and us as well) a little embarassment and ixnay on the cheesy jumpsuit, y'know?

Kintoun You are correct, sir. I believe Angel met Iron Man solo in an issue of Tales of Suspense prior to X-Men 9, and I know Iron Man contacted them while looking for the Hulk in Avengers 3, but this was the first full meeting of the teams.

The truth behind the return of costumes appears to have been that Marvel wants to have brand costumes. For instance, how Superman or Batman are recognized by their costumes. This is why Logan has the costume that many outside of comics recognize on him. Same as Rogue's return to her early 90's costume. Also, many of those costumes were designed by committee, instead of the artist of the books that feature them.

Surely though, Wolverine would still be just as recognizable as Wolverine if he were in his brown costume, right? I mean, you'd think the general public would recognize him in his hellbent for piping hot leather gear before they would in that tight little yellow thingie he wears now, so why not "reload" him into the brown togs? I think the 'browns' are most definitely the way to go in this day and age, for many, many many reasons.
Yes, I'm absolutely certain of it.

It is stupid, but it's what they're going for. I've heard from a writer that costume changes aren't allowed to create the whole brand thing.
Also, Logan on lunch boxes and t-shirts usually is in the 90's costume, the one popularized by the 90's cartoon. I don't think Logan would be as recognizable in another costume. He might eventually, but Marvel seems to want immediate recognization of their characters for marketing and licensing. They don't seem to be looking for what logical, attractive, or modern, but eye-catching and recognizable. Superman could get a new costume that's modern and people might come to like it and believe it's attractive, but it wouldn't be nearly as recognizable as the previous one just because it was around for so long.

Looking forward to MaY. But any thread concerning Marvel has to have some bitching.
Why is Marvel making heroes for EA so that they can have a crossover game, when Capcom already had not only popular, but established heroes with their crossover game, and NEVER MADE A COMIC ADAPTATION OF ANY OF THE VS GAMES!!!!
It makes no sense, Marvel makes them heroes so they can crossover in a game, but when they crossed over in a game made no comic. WTF!!!!
When Marvel vs Capcom I and II came out I waited for some comic... NOTHING!!!!!
BOOOO MARVEL FOR NEVER MAKING A VS COMIC!!!!

Wow. I count a grand total of three (highlighted) comics that are $2.25. Everything else is $2.99 or more.
Somebody please introduce Marvel to the following:
$2.50 and $2.75
The way they jump over/avoid numbers like this, it's like alien territory laced with mine fields.
Just seems arbitrarily greedy to me.

For Wolverine, I thought immediately it was Banshee, and the solicit reads like it too.
That Black Panther cover is NICE. John Cassaday is gorgeous. Although still not really interested in it, due to loving Priest’s so much. Maybe in trade.
Milligan’s Toxin I’m actually looking forward too. Probably wait for the trade anyways. But I think I’ll like it and it’ll be enjoyable and fun. Yet w/ hints of weird characterization possibilities.
Marvel Nemesis looks fun, and Pak is a writer to watch. They’ll surely run all of the issues of this, cause of the weird videogame connection, so I’ll wait for the trade.
and Giant Sized X-Men #3 w/ Whedon and Dave Cockrum. That is probably the only single I’ll but, and I don’t even read AXM (HC waiting), but it just sounds wonderful.
And Punisher’s The Cell I’m overjoyed about, cause I’d figure that putting that and The End (which I missed) into a trade would be sensible, and probably will happen.
Ironhorse
02-19-2005, 02:17 PM
I don't know how to feel about Nemesis, Pak is an amazing writer and it could be a good comic, but the concept behind, the videogame, is fu@#%ng awful, I really hate the idea since the first moment I've heard about this project. Maybe I'm gonna wait for reviews and the trade, maybe.

Uhhh maybe the partnership with Capcom had something to do with it? I mean it would have been cool, but perhaps the license or agreement only covered the game. As far as I know these characters are made FOR the game in partnership with Marvel from the start (or at least very early on)...

What ever happened between Marvel and Capcom, it almost seemed like there was bad blood between them or something.
Man I would have killed for a Marvel vs Capcom comic!!

First buy Cable/Deadpool! It's more like Deadpool sidekick but Wade gets a ton of time. Fabian does have a great grip on his character as well as Cable. Burnt Offering was a very well done arc if only the editors would have given it the stroke it deserved, instead Wolverine gets the rub to crash through other books. I mean Cable did things Magneto never was capable of! Second, Silver Surfer (the most wasted character in Marvel U) shows up and just destroys Cable showing what a powerful entity he really is! Wade is also a X-Man for like 2 issues very funny!
Punisher and now Captain America are 2 of the best Marvel books each and-nearly-every month. If you have not bought either it would be wise to pick them up.
Man, Mike Mckone is one lucky person first DC golden boy Geoff Johns now Straczynski. He knows how to pick them. Not sure about his Kirby Thing though?
Wasn't Millar the hack the one who said Marvels appeal is that people can relate to the character outside the costume when he was bitching about DC?

Looking forward to Fantastic Four (I'm back, baby, I'm back!) but it's what I don't see that's (sadly) more interesting:
- so much for She-Hulk restarting in May. :(
- no Supreme Power this month. Again.
- so much for NYX #6 coming out in June...

Soo... You don't mind that Superman or Batman would have different costumes (designed by the current art team) for each of their titles? And you do know that the both Superman and Batman aren't wearing the costumes they debuted in...
But, they still maintain their design basucs which maintains brand recognition and identity. Also, notice that neither Wolverine nor Rogue have the same costume that they did in the 90's. They are slightly updated, but still maintain the looks that many outside of comics would recognize. Neither the change in Bats/Supes or Rogue/Logan are drastically different from what came before. Bats/Supes costumes have undergone so many slight variations since their creation, it's collectively become a full-blown change in costume. However, it happened over such a broad period that there was never any big, drastic change. The x-men don't have such a luxury.

Yeah, only . . . a year and a half ago
The way Bendis makes this sound, it's basically X-Men Disassembled, in terms of content and quality.

Well it looks like I'll be getting 6 Marvel titles that month instead of my usual 4.....(well..since She-Hulk hasn't been rebooted yet again ...4)
1. Astonishing X-men
2. Cpt. America
3. She-Hulk
4. New Avengers
...........
5. Giant Size X-Men #3
6. Excalibur.... Maybe CC can get his writing mojo on here... i miss those days of writing glory..And I'd love to see it....er...Rise Like a Pheonix from the ashes..so to speak..
Excalibur is on the list mainly though because I am planning on getting House of M... and given the scope of Wanda's power...This could be where we see a return to her former heroic staus..I'd love that..
The rest of the highlights just didn't grab me... I am no fan of video games(I read, hang out on the internet and watch dvds for entertainment. ..I've never gotten into video games...) so the new Pak book just sailed right over my head.... :( The days of getting all of the books from Marvel and DC...with healthy dollops from many others are long gone..
But...I wish I had enough money for the Maximum editions as well..but DC has most of my cash for that month...and beyond. :)

Unless the silhouette's a total cheat, it's either Northstar or Banshee.
Please not Banshee. The guy deserves a break. He's become another character that lost his identity.
Maybe it's Forge with a wig?
Hmmm... He does look like Supreme Power's Dr. Spectrum...

Wolverine #25 makes it pretty obvious who the shadowy figure on the cover of #28 is, I won't spoil it, though.
Overall, May is looking like a very expensive month...Millar is doing great stuff in Ultimates 2 and Wolverine, I loved Young Avengers 1, and it looks like its only going to get better, and Brubaker's stuff on Cap so far has been excellent. On top of that, two issues of Exaclibur and Giant-Size X-Men 3! No new Iron Man though...
