Old Man, New World

Writer: J. D. Finn
Artist: Ivan Reis

What in the holy hell is going on with Superman? Man, is this issue a downer. Last issue he gets his butt kicked by a hilljack and then now he cant even brush his teeth. I read the issue where Gog speared him with that liquidfied kyptonite, but then nothing was spoken of since then. Was that ever resolved, because it appears as though it hasn't. In any event, Preus has an army of American suicide bombers and terrorists who really hate Superman and uses that to his advantage. Superman has the gray hairs like nobody's business and has a hard time doing just about anything in this issue. Eventually though, our man Supes is able to rip off the "S" symbol on Preus's chest which somehow is able to kill him. Supes has Martian Manhunter to thank for this bit of info, who is being held by Preus along with Jimmy Olson. Supes of course doesn't want to be a murderer so he goes to S.T.A.R. Labs where Doomsday supposedly is and the JLA B-team. Supes gets there and Hawkman wants him to get away and we are greeted to an army of Gogs.

If this all sounds confusing that is because it is. J.D. Finn guest writes this issue after the Austen run and I guess he is having a hard time of it. Doomsday is off somewhere and is supposedly unfindable....come on guys you are the JLA. This issue is filled with sloppy writing and I dont want to blame Finn because he is just playing clean up to Austen. My prediction is that Doomsday helps Supes against the Gogmen...doesn't make sense, but it looks like it may turn out that way. A lot of loose ends to tie before the Shazam thing happens, so they better get cracking.

On a happier note, I really like Reis's art. It is very kinetic and action-filled. If there isnt action going on Reis makes it look like its about to start. He still has some rough edges to work out, but he puts forth a good effort that I admire.

Grade: C

Depressing completely utterly stupendously depressing.

Gave it a D with generosity.

I rather liked this issue, especially after Austen's disappointing run. I thought it was rather exciting, except for the fact that I forget how Superman became old all of a sudden.

I'm sure Finn could do much better if he wasn't left with Austen's mangled mess.
