Just picked up this new one featuring the first appearance of a new character: The Batman.

He's okay, a little bit on the grim side, doesn't smile a lot and seems a little bit violent for my states.

Nevertheless, he's an intriguing character, not like a lot around at the moment. Turns out he has no actual super powers, he's simply an olympic level gymnast who's totally self taught. A brief introduction hints at an unusual origin. It seems his parents have been killed and he hunts criminals in some sort of act of revenge. Makes a change from all the aliens and magic we've had of late, I guess.

Anyway, the crux of this issue is him hunting normal criminals, cat burglars, hoods and so forth... The comic says 'they are a cowardly, superstitious lot'... Can't say I've noticed that myself but I guess the writer knows what he is doing.

Anyway, the main character himself, The Batman, is a bit dull (and grim). Also, it seens a bit odd that he carries a gun. Perhaps he could do with a brighter sidekick - however far be it for me to dictate the plots.

Also, the villiians were a bit one-dimensional. All hoods and ordinary lowlifes. Why not someone who resembles a clown? That's always been a personal creep-out of mine.

In all, a promising debut. I await future appearances eagerly - this one has great potential...

Let's hope National Periodicals don't swamp the market with this interesting new character and make him less relevant. Who knows? Movies could be around the corner.

I'll give it:

C+

Welcome to Newsarama, Mr. Hicks. We'll see if they can make it to a half dozen issues or so -- then at least there will be enough for a trade.

Nyce Review, I'll be picking this up, I just hope it doesn't get padded or anything.

A clown as a villain?

Bah. That would never work.

I give this eight issues before cancellation.

Comics characters without superpowers just aren't special enough for today's audience.

Maybe giving him actual "Bat" powers like being able to fly or even turn into a bat would up the interest. Or they could make him blind and have him navigate by some kind of sonar.

My newsvendor has just told me about the next issue...

Apparently, it features a female character who is - YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS - a cat burglar.

I'm sorry, but there must remain some credibility in the funnies. I shall not be picking this offensive rubbish up.

Some may buy anything that this fine publisher puts out, but I am proud to say I am not one of them.

Any fool knows that the fairer sex could never forcibly enter someone's private domicile. We all know that their main hobby is cooking and cleaning... Right?

Why can't they have a baddie who resembles peoples' fears? Why, I visited my local zoological museum today and there were (shudder) penguins there...

Why has no-one based a wrongdoer on those beasts? A best seller, I am sure...

Looks like a missed opportunity from one of the big publishers in this area. I hope you all join me in boycotting this rubbish, and let's all hope this flying rodent character simply fades into obscurity where he belongs.

What's next? Some greek sounding psychopath carrying martial arts weapons? Or worse... A female re-imagining of our favourite heroes? Superwoman, anyone?

PS. The above was my first attempt at a review. How am I doing?

Fine. You're a little behind in your reading, I noticed, but thats okay. I don't think anyone has posted a review of this issue.

What were the 1st 26 issues like? I don't know if I can jump into a series without reading all the prior issues first. What is the readership levels like? I'd hate to start a new series just to have it cancelled, or worse, rebooted with a new #1.

I don't believe that stories in this "chapbook" format will last, no matter how interesting the characters are. I prefer to wait until they collect all these chapbooks into a gilt-edged deluxe hardcover, thereby saving enormous amounts of cash. At least 30 or 40 cents, anyway.
