<blockquote>New Marvel Must Have will feature a Wolverine as Patch cover.
The exciting range of Marvel Must Haves just got bigger! Marvel Comics is proud to announce a new printing of the sold-out WOLVERINE #20-22. The first three issues of the “Enemy of the State” storyline. Readers thrilled to the fast-paced, action-laden narrative of Wolverine vs. the Marvel Universe, featuring the X-Men, Fantastic Four, SHEILD, and more!
Fans have called Mark Millar’s “Enemy of the State” the best new Wolverine tales in years. Marvel wants to share the story with everyone and we’re offering a variant cover for this printing by hard-working superstar artist JOHN ROMITA JR.
The special variant cover features Wolverine as his classic alter ego, “Patch”. Followers of the scrappy Canadian hero have long appreciated the many facets and faces of Wolverine’s personality, and “Patch” is a guise that always pleases, especially when drawn by John Romita Jr! Believe us when we say that JR JR has once again delivered the goods.

Buy this or buy the trade? This would be a better deal....

yeah but then youll have to pick up the issues of all the rest.
I really like the Must Have format in general, sometimes they dont release them soon enough though, but overall I wish they did more of them.
A She Hulk one would have been great.

I really love it when they offer a cheaper version almost immediately. Makes me feel real good having paid the higher price.

PS: I appreciate the fact that they offer a version for people who have not bought the issues before. But somehow I think it is unjust that persons who have bought the book when it came out (or even preordered it) have to pay more than the ones who are just jumping now on the ´bandwagon´. Doesn´t seem right to disadvantage the ´good´customer.
PPS: OK, so the PS was longer than the original message.

Does anyone know how well these sell? I know I buy the issues I'm interested in the week they come out (because I 'HAVE TO KNOW!' what happens. I'm a whore like that.) but I know a lot of people wait for trades. Somewhere in between this seems to lie, and I haven't heard much about how well they're selling. I do applaud Marvel for trying new publishing options though; the trades and Digets are keeping them well afloat, and single-issue sells are on the rise as well. I just don't know where these fall on the 'success-o-meter.'

From retail point of view it's a good/bad thing. Yes, they help keep hot storylines HOT, like it did for the Venom Ult. Spidey and the Astonishing Xmen storylines, but all that would have been a moot point if the early issues were available still. And some people will have 21 and 22, and only need the #20 and this does not help them. I would rather they took DC's point and made 2nd prints (with or without different covers) but AFTER the book sells out.

I agree but my bookshelf is full right now and this might be a cheaper option. I got a month to figure it out.

Absolutely.
And does anyone really think that Marvel won't be releasing bookshelf editions hot on the heels of the chapbooks.

1) Anyone really clever or "kewl" would have already known that, as this very site listed all of Marvel's trades up to May.
2) "Chapbooks" doesn't make you sound "kewl" or inventive, just retarded. Comics aren't a chapter in a book, because graphic novels aren't books. Hate to break it to you but most mainstream Americans will NEVER accept graphic novels in the same way as books. Hell, most of them don't think much of books either, looking at the constantly dwindling sales. It's ok, you can accept that you're just as un"kewl" of a geek by reading trades as some people are by reading comics. Just be yourself, relax and don't worry about what others think! Feel better?

It's hardly an injustice, and no one has to do anything. At this point, it's pretty much a given that Marvel will put anything starring Spider-Man, Wolverine, (any of) the X-Men, or Daredevil in a TPB (at least) not long after the end of the initial arc's release. And the TPBs pretty much alwyas come at a lesser price than the single issues. All it takes is a little impulse control.

I myself would prefer the trade but for those who cannot afford the trade, this might be better.
Personally I don't know if I will pick up either. I really can't stand it when something is so overhyped, not so much as the book itself but the particular talent behind it. Miller this and Miller that, is all I have heard about this and it's enough to drive someone batty. So eh?

Maybe everyone knows when Marvel's scheduled their quick turnaround bookshelf editions. Maybe not. I just figured its conceivable that someone might not have seen it since these things do cycle through.
Chapbooks is a perfectly appropriate word to describe the majority of what Marvel publishes. These days, Marvel publishes SGN's - Serialized Graphic Novels, and often follows them up with bookshelf editions of those graphic novels. Each of those single "issues" is basically a chapter in the Serialized Graphic Novel - hence, "chapbook." So let's call a spade a spade, OK.
(Yes, there's the occasional truly single issue story, such as a few of Garth Ennis' Punisher stories - but they're few and far between these days.)
And yes, many Americans aren't going to ever accept graphic novels as a legitimate art form. But that's OK, since even without them there's still millions and millions of potential new audiences waiting to be courted.
And I've got a two predictions about those audiences for you:
1. They're not interested in spending hundreds of dollars a year on superhero stories; and
2. They're not particularly interested in being obliged to buy chapbooks on a set periodic basis.
Maybe I'm wrong. Time will tell.

Nice thing is, it's often the case that the bookshelf edition is slightly cheaper than the sum of the cover prices of the chapbooks.
Not to mention that people can generally get the bookshelf editions at a discount through amazon.com. I'd recommend telling people to hold out for it.

YES!!!
As much as I love Wolverine (he's been my favorite Marvel character for almost 20 years), the persona of Patch was always moronic IMO.
"Hey, let's stick an eyepatch on Logan, NO ONE WILL EVER RECOGNIZE HIM!!!" (yet he dresses like he normally does)

Hear, hear. I liked Tieri's work and from there I realized just how boring a Wolverine book could be, thanks to Rucka's needlessly black and unimaginative take on Wolverine which so gleefully used the questions of "Is Wolverine more man than animal or vice versa?" as its personal whipping and I must say after the first arc, I gave up.
Millar's work as of late (Wanted, Spiderman, Ultimates) just hasn't done it for me, because in my eyes each of the aforementioned titles he's done suffers from an inability to write dialogue the fully expresses a sense of characterization that every writer should have rather than dialogue like, "Who's your daddy now, huh?" Or titles to story arcs like, "Fuck You," or making Captain America make an idiotic comment about how he's not cowardly like the French. Those are story killers for me, and feel free to spend money on 'em but even with Romita Jr.'s art, and the lowered price I'm still asking myself what's in it for me.

Its quite amazing to see a few people still "complain" . Marvel not doing any 2nd print was and still is one of the main (and valid) complaint about the company ... its far from perfect yet , but ibelieve that its still quite an amazing evolution .

The art looks horrible. Has JR JR completely given up rendering anything anymore? Do all his shapes have to be angular or hatchy?

Yeah, I dunno. I wondered if it was just me, as I've always enjoyed JRJR's work. I thought he was great on ASM. But his new Wolverine stuff seems way more stylized... especially in the costume. I'm not sure what to make of it.

I bought the "Must Have" Ultimate Venom and didn't know it wasn't the full story. This was about a year after the issues came out but the Must HAve was still kicking around. I felt so gyped. Luckily the shop owner allowed me to trade it back in for a discount off the Graphic novel.

wow, i didn't even know 22 was out. shows the insanity that comes from not going to the comic shop in two weeks. i'll pick that one up tomorrow i guess. i've liked this run. i gave up on Rucka after issue 1, and i've waited ever since for him to leave. unfortunately, i may end up dropping this after this arc. low money, high comics equals sad.:(
i like the must haves format. it helps though when the whole arc is included like the avengers one coming this week. i missed all but 500, and it helps me grab the back issues cheap.:)

A good place I'd recommend is Joe Quesada's own message board, where everything Marvel-produced is praised like the Second Coming. It can be reached via joequesada.com
I'm not going to say I do or do not like the story so far. I will say two issues in I am still waiting to be drawn into the story. The story is moving along pretty quickly but I've been kind of bored by it so far. That could be because of Elektra though; I've always found her to be a dull character. There are ten issues left in the Millar/JR JR run though so it really is to early to say if the run will be good or bad. With the Fantastic Four in the next issue I'm sure things will pick up.

I'll second that...
Diamond shows a Marvel Must-Haves: Avengers 500-502 for $3.99 coming next week....
I paid full cover price ($3.50) for # 500 alone. If I'd known I could've waited a couple months and paid a mere $.49 for 501 and 502, I wouldn't have bothered to search for (and not find) # 501, and would not have bought # 502...
For this, though, I'll wait for the trade (if anything)...get a mere 2 more chapters (I think?), but at least it'll be a bookshelf edition.

Excuse me while I geek out... I understand the opinion of the guy who thought the Patch persona was always a silly excuse for a disguise but its important to remember that for Wolverine at that time the Patch persona was more of a psychological retreat for him than an actual disguise. Logan always played Patch to the hilt with a lot of verve and charm. Something that always interested me is that in the early going of the solo series that kicked off in '88 with Claremont at the helm, it really seemed like he was making an effort to not use his claws unless he really had to.
I am sure the patch concept has long since past its time now for a wolverine book but it was fun while it lasted and in context. One thing that is frustrating though is that it would be cool if this variant cover actually featured the old 'patch' costume that was dark blue with a red sash... strangely sedate and entirely unlike the other Wolverine costumes. Even in that Wolverine's revenge video game there is an alternate costume called 'patch' that features logan in a brown jacked with the eyepatch... might be nice to see some props for the more obscure outfits of our favourite heroes.
