Okay this one I don't mind at all trying to do. Still one of my faves.
New X-men: Academy X #5
"Choosing sides" part 5 of 6
Writing by Nunzio DeFillipis and Christina Weir
Drawing by Michael Ryan
Synopsis: We left off with Kevin Ford a mutant who can decimate anything organic by a simple touch. He is currently trying to be charged with accidently killing his father. (Which I am not sure about yet either.) He is confronted at the school by a FBI agent Pierce. If the last name sounds familiar he is also the son of the famous reaver/ hellfire club member/mutant hater/cyborg Donald Peirce whom is current in prison. (Read New mutants #13) At the institute they question Kevin about the circumstances behind his father's death. Kevin seems reluctant, but insists that his fathers death was a accident. Agent Peirce tries to inform the staff that he merely wants to help in any way he can in clearing Kevin of any wrong doing. (and In character believe it or not) Emma defends Kevin, saying Peirce would never understand saying he was only a human. Kevin leaves the office with Emma's help. They next turn to Dani Moonstar his advisor. Since Dani was the one who brought him to the school in the first place. Dani insists that she only brought Kevin in for help. At the time she didnt want to turn Kevin over to the athourities, because lets face it a Mutant may not be given a fair trial. Emma in a shocking turn of events agrees with Dani, and then lashes out at scott for trying to side with Agent Peirce. At a arcade somewhere, Laurie and Josh are apparently on a date. From issue #4 it looked like Josh wanted to get back at Rahne, by dating Laurie. They are harrassed by a group of teenagers who didnt like mutants nor did they like the fact that a gold skined one was with a "normal-looking" girl callling him a freak. However Rahne jumps in scaring the jerks, and reveals to Josh and Laurie that Kevin was in trouble. They later meet up with David, Sofia, and Kevin. While trying to get into the mansion undetected, funny how David uses his powers aint it. They are met with Agent Peirce who holds them off at gun-point. Dani however comes in, and tries to quell the situation telling agent peirce they where just going out. Apparently Kevin is under house arrest until he gives himself up. Peirce agrees and lets them go. Inside the institute, Dani talks to the kids saying Kevin may need to give himself up. Sofia, feeling alone in the decision decides to run off with laurie. Inside the school The hellions are planning something big and try to get the FBI to leave by force. But Jay and sooraya disagree and Jay decides to stay out of it. Julian realizing they need more assistance, decides to enlist a new mutant who was ticked off at Dani's statements earlier already sofia. She agrees. The next morning Kevin is pelted by comments about his past, by nosy students. Gossip that was going around. He decides to sit down not with the new mutants but by himself in the cafeteria. Julian in a suprising oratory speech, tries to defend Kevin that anybody could be him and tries to rally support. I guess its involving his plan from last night. They speech had mixed reactions, but it seems like sofia is turning to the darkside, when she says or rather josh (error i know.) "He actually makes sense." The next Day Kevin is arrested.
The End of part 5.
My Analysis: A Huge difference between issues 4 and 5. The drawing I believe is superb, very well done. The art has more definition than I have seen from any artists that have gone to bat. When it comes to this book. It makes Barberi's work small in comparison. The Dialouge here is excellent as usual. But it works well with the different dynamics here. Sofia's character is coming out a lot more. Thank goodness. I see alot more of Dani now than in the last few issues. Josh is still the whiny crybaby. David's powers are coming in quite well. Austen if you want a example bud of what a good characterization is this is it. The only problem I have with this book is segue's and timing. It seems rushed but what do you expect from a small book. It also seems as if scenes are being dropped off for the bigger picture, hope N and C will stop that though. Also Excellent flow which will give any book a Possible A in my ratings If it does it well which this book obviously does. Other than that this book ranks up there with ultimate, astonishing, and Mystique in my book. Very well done N and C encore! encore! whistles* wohoo!
My overall rating for this book is nothing but a A (good job)
