<img src="http://www.newsarama.com/Marvel/Madrox/Madrox1sm.jpg" width="165" height="250" align="right">Marvel has provided Newsarama with the first 8 pages of <b>MadroX #1</b>, due in stores on September 15th. Marvel’s solicitation for the first issue of the five issue miniseries reads:

<blockquote>COVER BY: DAVID LLOYD
WRITER: PETER DAVID
PENCILS BY: PABLO RAIMONDI

Jamie Madrox, stabbed, staggering off a bus. Jamie Madrox, setting up a detective agency in the heart of Mutant Town. Jamie Madrox, a peaceful Shaolin priest. Which is the real Jamie Madrox? In this noir-esque thriller of a limited series, it's possible that even Madrox doesn't know anymore. Peter David, acclaimed for his run on X-Factor, reunites several of that title's most popular and whimsical characters--Jamie Madrox, Wolfsbane, and the aptly named Strong Guy -- and sends them on an adventure of light and darkness. Featuring the incredibly moody pencils of Pablo Raimondi.</blockquote>Speaking to Newsarama (http://www.newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13187) in May, David said of the series’ lead: “He's practically the "Hamlet" of Marvel. All of us have to make choices in our life. Every so often we reach a crossroads and we say, "Okay, this direction instead of that direction." Not Jamie. He's someone who's capable of living as many lives as he wants, experiencing whatever he wants, going in whatever direction he wants. As a result, because he can do practically everything, it makes it hard for him to do <i>any</i>thing. Or, at the very least, to place any value of one thing over the other because he never has to make that qualitative decision. He never has to figure out what's more important to him. As a result, he's becoming increasingly disconnected from life. He's all alone in a crowd, especially since he's his own crowd. So he becomes a detective as an endeavor to remain in touch with the world, with trying to help people and--perhaps most important--to experience their lives.”

Indeed. Madrox looks very promising.
I must admit that the art is a bit of a let down for me, not that it's bad or anything, but it's too dark IMO for Madrox.

PAD is writing though, so I already had it on my pull list....

Can't wait to read the first issue!!:D

Back in the days, David's & Stroman's X-Factor was one of my favorite muties book! :)

I wasn't really sure about Madrox getting his own book, still I pre ordered Madrox #1 and..boy I am glad I did. I got good vibes from the preview art. Very Vertigo like.

Peter David is back at the top of his game!

Never knew he left....

Anyways, this looks really good. I'm liking this Mutant Town thing. District X is very good and I'm sure we'll see the same, if not better, kind of quality here.

This book just goes to show how much depth the X-universe has..

Taking a "superhero" like Multiple Man, and making a dark, gritty, film-noir-y story about him...

I hope to god this turns into an ongoing.

Which, I think, is why PAD took this approach, playing against type and all that. Fun for the writer and potentially rewarding for the reader.

This comic looks like it's shaping up to be a lot better than I even hoped! :) Mutant Town is such a fascinating concept. I love seeing how all the other non-superhero mutants live their lives and how their lives have been affected by the mutant gene.

The problem with Madrox is that he never really had a personality, so now his personality is whatever the writer happens to inject into him. And seeing as how I've NEVER liked Wolfsbane in any personality she happens to create for herself, and a film-noir-Mutant-Town story doesn't appeal to me, I think I'll pass, despite my love for David's work.

Hmmm ... Multiple Man being treated seriously, Peter David writing, and some great art ... but man I don't really want to be picking up another X-book.

Random thoughts:

Cool! You can see my apartment building in the first frame.

I like Mutant Town. I was just reading some early-80's X-Men and loved seeing how Marvel really gave life to the different neighborhoods of Manhattan. It's sometimes a bit silly now -- Hell's Kitchen, for example, is a nice (and tiny) little neighborhood -- but it was cool. Alphabet City's a cool choice for Mutant Town. Now I'd like to see a hero who operates up in Washington Heights.

Wow, the witches of Endor? Talk about an obscure nerdy reference.

Overall impression:

Looks interesting, though I'm definitely in the "how many solo X-books do we need?" camp. I'm also a bit surprised to see this being done in a seemingly "Jemas-era" style, with the superheroics downplayed. It has worked well for District X, though, so we'll see how it works for this.

I like it. The only prob I can see is if the story gets to complicated with all these doubled running around.

Considering how I've never read David's X-Factor run, or barely any X-Men comics in my life, I'll wait for the trade.

But I'm a huge fan of David's writing and those first 8 pages blew my socks off. So its gonna be a lonnnngggg wait for the trade.

This was great. Madrox and Rahne are favorites, and I can't wait to read the rest. Hopefully, Madrox will still be his humorous self. PAD could use darker humor to fit the mood of the series. I'm just wondering why/how Marvel keeps making the same mistake regarding Rahne's religious background. She's Scots Presbyterian and even grew up thinking Catholics were evil. Maybe, they can say it's the character Madrox himself who doesn't know.

I caught that mistake too. Isn't it annoying?

From New Mutants #12, page 11:
{Caption} Nearby, Rahne Sinclair steps hesitantly - almost fearfully - into a church...

{Rahne's thought bubbles} "If Reverend Craig saw me now, he'd have a fit. To him, Catholics are agents of the devil. But we all believe in God, an' read the same bible - an' I can find no Scots Presbyterian cairk in the city - an' I so need to pray. I didn't find the preview to be all that exciting. I guess I don't care for the 'nior' style (and the whole thing being under the Marvel Knights banner too) -- the story (what's shown) and art come off as too dreary. No thank you. Anyway, I don't see this catching on with the masses.

I really have some reservations about the book but I can't wait to give it a try. I love Jamie and think he belongs back on one of the major teams. The price is right too. I'm poor, and three-dollar books can be pricy, at least when you subscribe to ten or more. I see this book getting old fast unless it can really mix stuff up every few issues. As great as it can be sometimes to read twenty-some pages of dialogue, this guy has a cool power and a lot of potential. Let's hope PAD utilizes it and maybe we'll see things like self-cannibalism or other wholesome fun.

i like the scene with rahne. the previews seem to be a little intresting the only reason i'd pic this up is probably for rahne. though multiple man himself does seem to be a tad bit intresting.

All I can recall is his work on Captain America Annual '99, a nifty All The Presidents Men-like story featuring Flag-Smasher written by Joe Casey, which also hints at the corporate world themes of Casey's Uncanny X-Men and Wildcats runs.

Regarding Raimondi's art in that particular annual, well what you're seeing on MadroX is what you'd expect after five years' worth of evolution. After the Cap annual I don't think I ever saw Raimondi's work anywhere, so when they announced him as MadroX's artist I wasn't too thrilled. But then I saw the initial artwork and was even more hooked (the premise and Peter's involvement was more than enough). After seeing the preview (which still contains several hints of the old Pablo's style), my hopes remain high.

He also did the lead story in JLA Secret Files #3 ("Blame") from 2000, and issues #99 & 101 of the Adventures of Superman series from April & June of 2000. What was one of the mysteries surrounding the team when PAD started his X-Factor run? That's right, someone killed on of Jamie's dupes. Now, I assume that the Nasty Boys and Mr. Sinister aren't going to be behind this one, but hasn't PAD already covered this territory?

Very much looking forward to this. Amid their orgy of reprinting every X-related comic ever published, Marvel should really look at reprinting the David/Quesada/Stroman stuff from X-Factor. Classic stuff.

As for Raimondi... My only other experience with his work was a couple of Batman/Detective issues (not sure which) toward the end of No Man's Land, and the lead story in one of the JLA Secret Files (the one dealing with the aftermath of the Tower of Babel storyline).

...have you read David Brin's Kiln People (http://davidbrin.com/kilnpeoplesample1.html)? It's a similar setup (a PI who sends out duplicates to do the legwork) and he has some fun exploring the effects of merging multiple perspectives, and writing from the viewpoint of a duplicate that knows it isn't original.

Anyhow, I loved your run on X-Factor and am sure this will be just as entertaining.

I use the comic book database www.cbdb.com It had 17 listings for Raimondi, 16 between 2000-2003, but not all for full pencils. I shouldn't let ya'll in on it, but cbdb.com is a FANTASTIC search engine I stumbled across. You can search many many ways...if you get a search error it is because it doesn't exist or isn't in the database. Great for original art questions (can search by issue, title, character!, etc.) and convention preparation. And it looks pretty comprehensive based on the results it pulled up for Raimondi judged against everyone's knowledge of the guy posted herein. So props to whoever runs the thing.

I already regret further exposing that juicy source of all info comic related, cbdb.com. I've gotten some sweet deals on ebay when the seller didn't know what he had (Marvel pages labeled "Inventory" in the issue slot throw some dealers off but I've ID'ed some via characters and cherry picked a few) and if everyone uses this...arrgh.

No, I'm unfamiliar with it. I took a fast look at the link and it seems to be about robot dupes rather than the whatever-the-hell it is that Jamie does. Then again, the Brin book is copyright 2002 and Jamie's been around for a good decade or two. Considering the world is able to countenance not one, not two, but three vampire detectives, I think it can handle two multiplying detectives.

And guys, as for Rahne...it's nothing new. I always thought she was Catholic. Can't swear to it, but I even thought I said so in X-Factor. Fortunately, thanks to you guys, we can fix it in the final version before it goes out.

While we're at work on Rhane, can we forget her recent appearance in Academy X? Cause that would be swell. Her affair with an underage student, revamped attitude and image, and just general crappiness can all be forgotten.

I believe Madrox was created in the mid-to-late 70's making him at least a 25 year-old character. Were there any tightly sealed mayonaise jars in this book Kiln People?

You know, you are probably right. Sorry about my "numbskulls" comment, PD, but it was generally levelled at the entire team. :)

The character of Rahne has so much potential, but sometimes it's been like the creative teams just didn't have any idea what to do with her, and it gets annoying, seeing these things slip through. It's ridiculous how many times artists or writers seemed to not have a clue--like they'd never been to more than one kind of church before, or known more than one kind of christian.

Look, it's gonna happen on occasion: Stuff slips through. Hell, I remember the time years ago when I was working at the Marvel offices. At the time one of my jobs was to make sure the price was correct on the cover. And I got the cover of "Indiana Jones #1" and noticed that, thanks to a coloring screw-up, a background character had three arms. I made a note of it and kicked it back to the editor, Louise Jones (now Simonson). And Weezie rocketed into my office, thanking me profusely for catching it, particularly considering it wasn't my job. But keep in mind I was the very last person to sign off on the cover, which means the cover went past *everyone* and it slipped by. So it happens.

I don't blame the editors for missing it: They have enough going on remembering what's what for the characters they themselves are charged with overseeing (Rahne is actually under the purview of a different office). So in this case they probably just figured I knew what I was talking about since I had far more experience with Rahne than they. Which means I let them down. So don't slap them around when it was my goof.

In any event, as I said, it's all moot. We're changing the phrase "strict Catholic upbringing" to "strict religious upbringing" (since fix-wise it fits easier) and calling it a day. When Stan always said that fans are the real editors of Marvel comics, this may be part of what he meant. So take two gold stars out of petty cash.

What was meant by the original post was that they could see what was going to happen before it did once they started reading the book, or preview. It's like going to a movie and figuring out the surprise ending before it's over. You predicted it before it happened in the movie, yet you were still watching the movie.

I think Newsarama posters get a bad enough reputation without crap like this, so next time why don't you stick to the discussion of the book and quit being a bully. Especially if you don't know what you're talking about.

That said, not a David follower, but the book looks good, I'll be buying it.

I have no doubt that you're right that that's what the poster meant. But I'm always slightly more impressed when people who claim something is predictable actually, y'know, predicted something.

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing the poster predicting all the beats of the rest of the issue. Which shouldn't be impossible since the summary of the issue pretty much points the way. So it should be a snap. Pages 1 through 8 were easy to anticipate? Okay. Tell me what happens on pages 9 through 22.

Heh, an interesting exercise indeed. I hope you don't miss my meaning, I'm all for people being taken to task, or issued a challenge, I just found the response idiotic to say the least.

Predictable and predicted are two different words, and depending on how they're used they can mean a variety of things. My point simply being that never did the original poster say he predicted what was going to happen before he read the preview, which makes the response of "show me where you predicted it on paper" just stupid.

Of course, being a writer, you already knew all that. Heh. So, there you go original poster (sorry, forgot your name....) a challenge by Mr. Peter David just for you!

Does he get a prize if he gets it right? Or will the book get delayed so you can change it? Heh, j/k.

Sure, why not. Let him predict, scene for scene, what happens on pages 9 through 22, and I'll send him a signed copy of the book. And, as I said, considering much of it's described in solicit stuff, this should be a cakewalk for him.

Speaking of, I'm always curious as to who writes the solicits? They seem to be going the way of movie previews, you read/see them and it seem almost unnecessary to pay for the final product. Rest assured, I will be buying Madrox, it and District X will be the only X-related things on my reading list!

I'm going to have to drive 45 minutes once a month just to get this. God my comic shop sucks.

Wow, awesome! I can't believe how good it is (my expectations were very low for this book).

Yep, definetely on the pick up list.

Ah, I remember fondly the the All-New All-Different X-Factor. Everyone on the team, Havok, Strong Guy, Quicksilver, even Polaris tried to open a mayo jar, but the only that could was the flatscan Val Cooper ;)

Is that the *real* Peter David??

Haha, I didn't mean to offend Peter's particular writing skills.. I just saw "Madrox" and I thought it was just another garbage, inconsequential, squeeze-the-fan-dollars mini, specially considering that Multiple Man is not what you would call a mainline X-Men character, but it's quite the opposite. I didn't know he was the writer until I saw this thread

So there's something I don't understand. Is Rahne visiting? A roommate? Are they dating?

I wonder why they didn't call the title "Multiple Man"? Hahahah.

Ah! Okay, well, see the interesting stuff you learn? And yes, I agree, he's not exactly what you would consider top tier. But I think Marvel believed that fans would have fond enough memories of my brief X-Factor stint that they would be supportive of the title on that basis. So I guess we'll see.

Yes, Rahne is visiting, helping Jamie set up his office. However, while she's there, she gets pulled into an adultery case so bizarre it could only happen in Mutant Town.

PAD, what are you still doing on this thread? Didn't you get the memo?!? You creators are supposed to make one post and then ignore us trolls and fanboys. Jeez man, you're all busy makin me like you and want to buy your book. Thanks a lot! You are supposed to just Bush it and do your thing unilaterally without any input or contributions from the fans.

I dunno about "Bushing" it, but hey, when the fans are right, they're right. And they were right about the Rahne not being Catholic thing, so why not have it be right instead of wrong? As for the rest of the series, since it'll all be written before the first issue comes out, you can be assured fan contributions won't have any impact on the story itself.

Can't wait for the book. Hopefully Marvel will release Peter David's X-Factor run in trade format in the near future. Just reread it, but I'd buy it again anyway.
