Newsarama Forums Closing at 3pm EDT Tuesday June 3

Hi everyone,

Here's the official notice: these forums are going to be locked tomorrow, Tuesday June 3 at 3pm EDT.

I'll be available tomorrow to answer any last questions you might have. I'll also post a reminder tomorrow about how to log in (email addy, not username) to the new forums, and any final details you might need.

Guys - I know it's not vBulletin or what you're used to, but the forums do work. They may not be very flashy right now, but there are plans in the works to improve them, both on our side and Pluck's side. Like I've said, we met with Pluck, and they are very aware of the wants and needs of both you guys and the current community. They are committed to making things better and more functional.

I know I'm happy about what's just around the bend. I think you will be too!

Why the phuck do the forums REQUIRE JavaScript on to even SEE them?

That's so bass-ackwards I don't even know where to begin... [quadruply so if HTML sigs are allowed. ×8 if you can't disable the sigs.]

However, you can participate in those forums if you like, as your account works across the sites.
What about username clashes with people already there?

I would recommend you check back sometime after 9pm EDT tonight. This does not mean 9pm on the dot. But yeah, check back after 9.

HTML sigs

Perhaps I haven't been clear. When I say HTML in sigs, I mean that you can include a link to something, and an image (I believe you can link that image as well). Sigs won't simply be limited to plain text. I apologize if I've been unclear with this element.

Now what about requiring JavaScript to even view (which NO other forum software I've ever encountered does, including but not limited to vBulletin versions more recent than this, phpbb, Invasion Power Board, UBB.threads, SMF...), disabling the viewing of sigs/avatars, and username clashes [I've had this username for eight years here - I know it says six, but the site was wiped twice before that - longer elsewhere, and I'm disinclined to bother if I need to change it...]

Your username transfers, but you have to log in with the email address you registered with and your regular password. Post count starts fresh, I believe, and I'm sure you have to manually transfer your sig.

My guess is that they are using the same servers so won't be able to do that.

Sorry for the waiting period. It takes time to transfer over the tens of thousands of users to the new system, so that's why we need the time.

So when this Rama closes, it'll be 10 PM for me, and I'm at the point of my vacation where I'm pretty much out of money, and I've seen everything.. so.. I'm not going out tonight, and the new Rama won't go up until at least 4 am my time.

I have no control over the javascript issue.

We've spoken to Pluck about the ability to disable sigs/avatars. Username clashes are unavoidable, and we are alerting those we've discovered have username issues. A couple of emails have gone out and more are coming. If there is a problem that comes about regardless, I am here to help. well between the transfer of all the users and the fact the domain name is staying the same i dont think these could possibly stay up during the xover

(you cant really have 2 websites pointing to the same domain)

Are you sticking to your regular sleep schedule while over there?

If not, 10 at night to 4 in the morning is when I usually am asleep. You can go make your last post here, crash out, and then start posting on the new forum in the morning. It'll be like your own Brand New Day.;)

Yes, but the whole concept of using forum software with that level of %$^& about it in the first place baffles me beyond the point of comprehension.

I'm noticing a pattern here... can this thing walk and chew gum, figuratively speaking? Is it alpha-build software or something? Alpha or beta, at least - 'cause it doesn't look or sound like a release-quality version...
