Smallville" creators and executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have announced they are not staying on for the eighth season of the show. They sent out the following open letter:
As the creators of "Smallville" we look back at 7 amazing years. We look back at 152 episodes. We look back knowing that the show will continue into Season 8 without us. After much heartache and debate we have decided it is time for us to move on.
Over the last 7 years we have had the honor of working with a remarkable team of people here in Los Angeles and in Vancouver. We have been blessed with a wonderful cast who we have watched mature with admiration and affection. We have been rewarded with a fan base that is as loyal as it is vocal.
We are incredibly proud of our work on this show. We achieved what we set out to do. We never compromised our vision. We leave knowing that "Smallville" is the longest-running comic book based series of all-time. The show was featured on the covers of Rolling Stone, MAD magazine, TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly. The pilot had the highest-rated premiere in the history of the WB. Even in its seventh year it is still the #1 scripted show on the network. "Smallville" is watched by millions of people in hundreds of countries and in dozens of languages around the world.
The show's success is a credit to a fantastically talented group of people. We wanted to take this chance to single some of them out. Our writers – your work speaks for itself. James, Jae, Rob, David – the backbone of our team in Vancouver. Joe Davola, Chris and Shelly – remember those Friday night brainstorming sessions? Len Goldstein and Steve Pearlman – thanks for believing we could do this. David Nutter – for giving the show your magic touch. John Litvack – when the knives were out, you always had our backs. Ken Horton – our Yoda. Peter Roth – Smallville's biggest fan. Melinda, Michael R., Paul M., Susan and Suzanne – for steering us through 152 episodes. Greg Beeman – your passion is an inspiration. Jordan, David, Garth, Carolyn, Bob & Lew – and everyone at the much-missed WB. Paul Levitz, Greg Noveck and the guys at DC Comics. Lisa Lewis – our very own soccer mom/mafia accountant. Michael Gendler – aka mega-counsel. David Lubliner – we can finally focus on features now. And last but in no way the least, Renee Kurtz – the smartest TV agent in town, we would be nowhere without you!
Finally, to the fans who have stuck with us through the highs and the lows: know this – we never stopped fighting to make this show great. Thanks for watching.

the kool aid has rot your brain. the show has been bad since it's inception and grown worse with age.
at least gough and millar were contained on that show and couldn't screw anything else up. now they'll start making bad movies that i'll be exposed to. when will it end!

Didn't they co-write, or co-co-write X-Men 2?
Either way, this show is a great example of milking it too much. I remember these two saying in interviews that they originally had the show planned out through high school and those first four seasons were pretty good, but then everything went to hell (with a few exceptions) from season five on.
Once they killed Jonathan, the show started to deviate from its original concept.

This can't be a bad thing.
The show needs people to die. A lot of people. People let some of these bastards die and change the name to Metropolis.

Why? Welling doesn't want to be Superman. He's made it clear a number of occasions that he doesn't want to wear the suit.
The best thing would be for this show to just END already. It's dragged the Superman mythos thru the mud, it's made idiots of the characters, and it's well past time for it to die.

It can still be capeless, but if the show wants to be a angsty drama, better to be a urban angsty drama. I guess it still draws good ratings for UPN, so cancellation seems a way off. The only way Smallville dies right now is if Welling leaves. He might not want to be Superman, but he's enjoying his paycheck as Superboy2Man.

IIts funny, i always considered smallville to be an elseworlds story, so i didnt mind how it approached the mythos as much it just re-envisioned it.
Lol, season 6 and 7 have been better from 5 and 4 (made me stop watching) but i'm almost ready to give up on the show again. The stupidity and whining of clark this season has been so atrocious. Hell, when bizarro replaced him, he was a better hero and person than clark was. Its a shame that they have to leave but maybe some new blood can reinvigorate the show. And

It's my understanding that Brian Wayne Peterson and Kelly Souders were taking over as showrunners. Will this be an improvement or not? Eh I don't know, they've written some of the better episodes (like the death of Jonathan Kent and the introduction of Green Arrow, though not all of their episodes would be ones I'd call great. I also heard that their budget is also being reduced, I don't give the show long either way.

The big queston is...Does Jeph Loeb have anything to do with the upcoming season? If not, then half the battle is already won.

I'm okay with this. Like people have said, change won't be a bad thing for Smallville. Although it's a little late in the game.

Personally, I thought the best season of Smallville was the one Loeb was most involved in: season 2, when Clark learned of Krypton and his heritage from Chris Reeve as Dr. Swann. After that season, the show went downhill and has never been as good since.

That's when Loeb seemed to be...good. I don't know if he's overwhelmed by multiple projects or if he's lost his touch, but every thing he's touched since has seemed crappy.

For better or worse (mainly worse), Smallville keeps decent ratings. Veronica was always on the verge of cancellation.
