<img src="http://www.newsarama.com/AniShorts/450/Rocketeer_Adventure_Magazine_1.jpg" border="0" align="right">Newsarama has learned via a close friend of the artist’s that Dave Stevens died last evening of complications due to leukemia, with which he had battled for many years. He was 52 years old.

Born in Lynwood, CA on July 29th, 1955, Stevens is best known for his work on his creator-owned <b>The Rocketeer</b>, which was first published in as a backup in Mike Grell’s <b>Starslayer</b> in 1982. Stevens’ style, which was wholly his own, but owed much to pulp artists of the earlier part of the 20th century was loved by his many fans, while his story merged the pulp sensibility with a modern sensibility.

Stevens’ first professional comic work was inking Russ Manning’s pencils for the daily Tarzan comic strip starting in 1975. Dave always kept at least one finger in comics while he was working on storyboards or animation, providing covers for Comico’s <b>Jonny Quest</b> series or other work.

<b>The Rocketeer</b> appeared in small installments throughout 1982 to 1995, and was turned into a film in 1991 by Walt Disney Pictures. The comic book version, in its way, helped usher in the re-popularization of Bettie Page.

Mark Evanier has written a short obituary which can be found here (http://www.newsfromme.com/archives/2008_03_11.html#014911).

There are no plans for a public service.

Years ago I saw Dave Stevens at a local electronics store and recognized him from convention appearances. He was flipping through stacks of DVDs on the rack and after I noticed which alphabet section he was in, I walked over and said "Please tell me you're not looking for what I think you're looking for." He replied that the studio hadn't sent him a copy. For that matter he didn't own a DVD player yet, but was thinking about getting one.

The movie was of course The Rocketeer.

I helped him look, but the store didn't have a copy (I have a similar story about Mark Hammil, but maybe another time). He was nice about the whole thing and I wished him good luck on finding one andI went on my way. I grew up in LA and am quite blase about celebs, so no autographs or anything, just a few ironic moments with an artist whose worked I had followed and greatly admired.

Thanks for everything Dave. I was and am a huge fan of your work.

I almost forgot; I do have Dave Steven's autograph after all. I bought a print from him at a con, the only artist I've ever bought one from, and he signed it. It hung in my home office for years, but has been put away since I moved.

Time to hang it back up I think.

My jaw dropped when I saw this headline. I was always impressed with his art and the Rocketeer was an iconic character. The era the Rocketeer was set in always apealed to me and made me long for simpler times when I read the comic and saw it brought to the big screen. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

I posted this on my blog today:

It seems like All I've done lately is become the bearer of bad news. Dave Stevens, an amazing illustrator, and creator of one of my all time favorite characters, Cliff Secord: The Rocketeer passed away recently from complications from Luekemia.Dave was literally one of my alltime favorite artist. His line as an inker was so incredibly lush yhat I drooled when ever I saw his work. I only got to meet him once at the San Diego Comic Con, we talked briefly as I showed him my work and I gushed over him. He was humble, and complimentary about my work and I will remember him as a gentleman.

I'm heartbroken as I look at my Rocketeer figure that stands over my computer.I can't imagine not seeing a new Dave Stevens work.

Rocketeer was the character that turned me into this whole genre of storytelling. The art was fantastic and the girls (Bettie Page, manoman) were beautiful.

The movie is one of my all time favorites since I saw it in a run down theater in the town where I lived in Mexico and inspired me to dream.

It makes me sad that one more of us is gone and that there will be no more of his art being created.

He always claimed that he was the influenced one by many that look ed up to him.

Today... well... today sucks.

I was shocked when I heard the news. I knew Dave was sick (which is why he missed the Rocketeer Panel at last year's SD Comic Con) but I had no idea it was this bad.

I wrote the following on my blog:

F***.

Yeah, I said f***.

Today I found out (on comicbookresources.com) that Rocketeer creator/artist/writer Dave Stevens passed away after a long battle with Luekemia. Dave was 53.

Obviously, I was a HUGE Dave Stevens fan. The Rocketeer is not only a great comic and fun movie for me. It's a part of my identity... something that I identified with strongly. There are an entre mess of people who know me as "Rocky" or "Rocket". It's been my nickname (and my email address) for over fifteen years.

Dave Stevens is actually more known for his modern renditions of Betty Page then he is The Rocketeer. It was due to Dave's love of Betty and amazing artwork of her (and her use in the pages of the Rocketeer as Cliff Secord's girlfriend) that brought Betty out of seclusion and back into the public eye.

Dave's unreal talent was unmistakenable. His comic book covers and lithograhps are the stuff of dreams. His ttention to detail and the beauty he brought out in his artwork is instantly reconizable.

I got the chance to meet Dave at the 1998 DragonCon in Atlanta. Dave was there doing signings but NOT doing sketches. After talking with him for a while, Dave pulled me aside and told me (hushed) that if I left one of the white boards I was using for sketches with him, he might have a present for me by the end of the con... but it had to be a secret, because he did NOT want to get into doing a mound of sketches.

The next day, I was walking in Artists Alley when I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was Dave. He motioned with his head for me to follow him. We went to his table and he handed me a brown paper bag.

"Our secret right?" he said.

"Absoultely." I responded. "What do I o-"

"Get the hell out of here, you don't owe me anything." he cut me off. "The least I can do for a guy walking around with a name tag that says 'RocketeerZ' huh?"

I chatted with Dave a little more and even got to sit behind the table with him for a few minutes. The friends I was with at the Con have teased me ever since that dave must have needed to take out a restraining order on me to get me away from there.

The sketch he did was a simple Rocketeer helmet. He had personalized it for me and signed it. I freaking love it.

It most likely only took him a couple of minutes... but the fact he took the time to do it meant the world to me.

I've heard a lot of things about Dave over the years, (especially from his ex-wife horror scream queen Brinke Stevens) but I will always rememeber him as a great and personable guy who created something that touched me and a guy that gave me the single greatest comic-book related item I own.

Rest In Peace Dave. The world is a little darker without you.

It gets to the point when I dread hitting the front page of the site for fear of hitting news like this. And just as I relax, another one pops up.

More than just the Rocketeer, Dave is all but single-handedly responsible for reintroducing Bettie Page to a new generation. I know he always said he had a check waiting for her should she ever contact him - far as I know, she did.

This is by Mike Kaluta but still a fitting tribute to Dave...

Wow, this is just shocking news. Dave Stevens has been one of my favorite artists for years, and his work was always something I pointed to when I wanted to show non-comic fans how good comics can be.

I would love to see a publisher release a nice collected edition of all his Rocketeer stories. It's time a whole new generation of fans had a chance to discover them.

Also, a good way to remember him would be to do what I did- make a donation to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at http://www.leukemia.org/hm_lls.

I knew this day was coming, but it's always a shock when it finally happens. I only met Dave a few times, but he was always such a nice guy and had kind words for my work no matter how bad it really looked. I was such a fan. Just the other day I was oooh-ing over a couple pieces of his that were recently reprinted in Ron Goulart's "Good Girl Art" book. They were scanned from the originals and printed so you could really see every little brushstroke and the flow of the ink. His drawing ability, his ink line, and his wonderful cheesecake are all amazing. I'm honored to even be mentioned in the same book as someone as talented as Dave. I remember buying that issue of Star-Slayer with the very first Rocketeer story when it first came out when I was a kid. I was inspired then, and his work has continued to inspire me over the years, as it has so many comics artists that came after. While my condolences go out to his family and friends, we, his fans, can honor him by continuing to enjoy his work and share it with others who may have yet to discover it.

Just last week I got tired of waiting to frame the dozens of comic art posters I own and decided to dive into my boxes and just tape up some favorites in my studio (mint condition be damned!). One of the first that I found was an "Airboy" poster by Dave Stevens and I immediately posted it right by my worktable. Even after all these years the colors retain their brightness, and I find myself staring at the slightly off center pose of Valkyrie, the way that the hero is draped around her legs and the level of detail in her hair and clothes. It reminds me of the first time I saw a Rocketeer comic and thought, "Just give up now, you'll never be that good".

I lost a hero today. Goodbye, Dave, and thanks for everything.

I got the sad news this morning while I was on the phone with a friend of Dave's. The loss of such a nice guy is never easy ... and losing such a distinct artist is sad on another level. Don't forget those incredibly lovely Jonny Quest covers he did for Comico. That was a great series, and his covers were always just jaw-droppingly gorgeous. A lot of the creators I work with are friends of (or at least very friendly with) Dave, so it's a little hard to make business calls today ... everyone seems to be mourning the loss of a great man.

Lots of love and warm wishes to Dave's family.

I'm lucky to have spent time with Dave the last few years. He lived a short distance from us and the last time Sarah and I saw him was we picked him up for a dinner at a friends house.

I was always impressed with how thoughtful Dave was. He was a guy who listened and genuinely cared what others had to say and how they felt. Even though he was sick, Dave always wanted to now how others were feeling. He was just like that.

Dave was a tremendous talent. His Rocketter comics alone have earned him a place in comic and illustration history.

Rest in peace, Dave.

Dave's work was genius. He and his work will be terribly, terribly missed.

Another tragedy in our business, and it's only March. Dave Stevens, Steph Peru, Steve Gerber. If there's someone whose work means a lot to you, or touched you in some fashion, find a way to let them know. An appreciation after they're gone can't help but seem somehow ... hollow.

WoW, he was really, really great. I loved that all of his work had a naturalfeel to it, like he was born to illustrate. I still have the Alien Worlds comic he did in the 80s', one of my faves, especially for his beautifully rendered sexy women.
Thanx for sharing your art, you'll be missed.

OMG! This is like a punch to the gut! Dave Stevens was one of the nicests guys I ever chatted with at a convention. I remember when the Rocketeer made his first appearance in the 80s and how I swooped up every appearance.

How many of you are old enough to remember this series? I remember how pissed I was as a teenager to find out that a back-up feature would be interrupting Mike Grell's main series. When I actually saw that series, "The Rocketeer", I was blown away! I had never seen anything like that before! The art was BEAUTIFUL & transported me back to a different time. I continued to get The Rocketeer's adventures wherever I could find them!

That' s too bad.

I remember seeing the movie and knowing it was comic book based. I was disapointed that it really wasn't written back in the 1930s. I don't really care now though, it works.

This sucks he was a great artist. I was just randomly saddened thinking about Wieringo's passing the other day and it's interesting how a comic creator's passing can have an impact on me that I don't usually feel when a "celebrity" passes. This one will be no different, Rocketeer and Iron Man were my two favorite hand me down books as a kid even ahead of Sppiderman.

Merely 4 days ago, my son's godfather also died of complications due to leukemia.

It is truly sad to lose someone as talented as Dave at such a young age. His imagination soared even higher than his jetpack-fueled masterpiece, the Rocketeer. We are all a bit lessened by his passing, but we can take solace in his art. That is the true immortality of a creative genius like Dave.

What sad news. 52 years old, too.

He's one of my friend's all time favorites & the stories he has been telling me since I broke this news to him, it sounds like he was a tremendous human being & such a great ambassador for the comic industry.

My friend is torn up. He met him 7 times & always had a great experience with him.
It just goes to show you how much of positive impact Mr. Stevens had on everyone he met.

My condolences to his family, friends & peers who have lost a true legend & first class human being. Truly sad news indeed. Way too young.

I first met Dave Stevens in the City of Angels, at a very exciting time in my life. Everything was so fresh and new.

Even though it was the first time I met him, felt like I already knew him through his beautiful artwork. Had pencils to my first fresh comic book (of the last issue of Maze Agency) in my portfolio-- getting ready to board a flight from L.A. to Oakland for Wonder Con. Standing in the terminal not too far from a DC Editor-- was Dave Stevens. Spotting editors from the Big Two to a young freelancer is like a blinding beacon in the night, but the editor immediately faded into the background... standing near my favorite 'good girl' artist. Referring to him as a Superstar would've been an understatement. "Why aren't you flying first class, Dave?" And he was like... "why would I be?" Very humble, and in my eyes, he was (and is) comicbook Royalty. I was shocked... why would he travel like the rest of us mere mortals.

He offered to share a cab to the con after the flight, but I made previous arrangements. Kept kicking myself after leaving the airport. I could've hung out with Dave frickin' Stevens... and said "sorry I cant"? stupid stupid stupid. Crossed paths again at the show, and he was encouraging and kind about my work... something I sorely needed after going round after round of portfolio reviews. Such an inspiration, and so down to earth. I still can't see how an Artgod wouldn't be flying first class, or why they would even bother with airplanes to fly. In my eyes-- Artgods walked on water, and couldn't do no wrong.

http://franchesco.com/pics/Stevens1.jpg

We are so lucky he chose comicbooks to lend his stellar talents to.
Dave was a total class act... and will be sorely missed!
Silver lining is that he is no longer suffering from his illness.
My condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

When younger, the Rocketeer was one of my favorite independent characters. I always looked forward to his next appearance. In fact, when the movie came out, I was excited. I just wish that there had been more. It's an awesome movie and catches the feel of the comic books.

I always loved too how there were Doc Savage connections made within the stories, especially considering I was going through a phase in readiing Doc Savage stories at that time too.

I even bought a Rocketeer figure and stood it up on the bookshelf with an American flag behind the figure. I couldn't resist since I always loved that image of the Rocketeer standing in front of the flag, both in the comic and the movie.

Thank you, Dave, for the awesome stories and images. You will be missed.

Rest in Peace. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dave Stevens at SDCC years ago. I approached him at his booth, and asked one, simple question.

"So, did you have a lot to do with the Rocketeer movie?"

At that time, I was not familiar with his large body of work past the 3-issue Rocketeer series Comico had put out in the late '80s.

Stevens looked at me with a mixture of disbelief and disappointed frustration. "I spent two whole years of my life on that thing." I felt like I had stabbed the man right in his heart. He saw how bad I felt, apologized, and asked what I had thought of it.

I told him that I felt it was the best superhero film I had seen, as it was entirely true to the source material. He seemed to be pleased, and agreed with me.

In all honesty, I owe Dave Stevens a mighty "thank you" for making my mind's eye image of Jennifer Connely at her peak of perfection possible by providing Bettie Page's shoes to fill.

Mr. Stevens, you will be missed.

He was a great artist and probably a greater creator. The Rocketeer was so pure. He can stand side by side with so many of the great pulp characters. Dave will be missed but will be remembered, that's for sure. I've already introduced my kids to his characters.

First and formost, I think Dave Stevens was a great storyteller. Despite his godlike talent to render the most beautiful and dynamic figurers imaginable, he realy knew how to use restraint in his sequentials. He never seemed to need to sacrifice one for the other, and I always admired that. I can remember some Rocketeer pages packed with something like 9 panels on one page, and every single line between the gutters of that page was poetry in motion.

RIP

i've been a fan of Dave Stevens' work for a long time, not to mention many of the artists that he inspired. his work was always so clean and beautiful. to this day, 'the Rocketeer' is still my favorite comic movie adaptation.

one thing that hasn't really been mentioned, though, is his contribution to the current DC hero flash costume that's still used to this day. albeit a minor costume change, dave stevens was the designer of the flash costume on the tv series; the biggest change being the 'lightning bolt' belt coming to a 'point' rather than a circle going all the way around the torso. shortly after, DC incorporated this into the comic book version of the flash, and it's still used and hopefully will continue to be used, (as i like it more ;) ) as it differentiates the 'barry allen' flash from the 'wally west' flash and the short-lived 'bart allen' flash.

RIP mr. stevens. you are missed.

I can't believe that Dave Stevens is dead.

The first place that I ever saw his art was when the Rocketeer appeared in Starslayer. I figured that it was inevitable that it would get its own comic, but then Pacific faded away. It eventually landed elsewhere, but unfortunately, there was never enough material to satisfy this Rocketeer fan. I loved the movie when it came out, and during that brief period in my life when I thought I could draw, the Rocketeer was a big, big influence on me. I was always sad that Stevens didn't do more work in comics, but he chose not to be a slave to the grindstone, and was probably happier for it.

I can't believe that Dave Stevens is dead.

The comic book industry lost a true legend with Dave's passing. The only downside with the superior quality of his work is that we never saw it as often as we would have liked. I was yearly delighted with him releasing a new sketchbook at San Diego. You can now rest in peace knowing you will be remembered as one of the best illustrators in this industry as well as a great human being from what I have read all over the net.My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Dave's work was genius. He and his work will be terribly, terribly missed.

Another tragedy in our business, and it's only March. Dave Stevens, Steph Peru, Steve Gerber. If there's someone whose work means a lot to you, or touched you in some fashion, find a way to let them know. An appreciation after they're gone can't help but seem somehow ... hollow.

Also Jerry Serpe within hours of Dave Stevens' announcement.

Agreed about your main point. After they're gone, it's a matter of one's spiritual beliefs if they get the sentiments. When they're alive, we know almost for sure they received the appreciation.

I think Ron Marz hits it on the head for me. After Mike Wieringo passed and the shock of it all, I thought that I/we need to let the ones we really appreciate know it. I think a lot of times we assume they understand how much their work is appreciated, but maybe everyone assumes that and we don't share enough. Dave was an incredible artist, and a distinct and unique talent that really stood out when I first saw the Rocketeer.

I know there are so many that we love, but I especially think for the legends we should let them know how much their work has meant before they are gone. So to Ditko, Romita Sr. & Jr., Perez, Steve Rude, Gene "the Dean" Colan, Starlin, Alex Ross, Al Williamson, and a hundred others---Thank you! We love you!
