<blockquote><b>"HUNDREDS OF COMIC LEGENDS AND RISING STARS APPEAR AT NYCC"</b>

Norwalk, CT, March 6, 2008: The New York Comic Con (NYCC) today revealed the complete roster of the comic book legends, luminaries, and rising stars who'll appear in its 2008 Artist Alley. The 2008 New York Comic Con takes place April 18-20 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City and features Guests of Honor including Mike Mignola, Grant Morrison, and T.M.Revolution.

Artist Alley is a division of NYCC's Exhibition Hall reserved for comic book and pop culture creators -- both legendary as well as emerging -- and is a unique arena that allows for creators and fans to personally interact. Highlights from New York Comic Con's Artist Alley include Mark Buckingham, C.B. Cebulski, Colleen Doran, Danny Fingeroth, Keith Giffen, Bob Layton, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, Monte Moore, Rags Morales, John Romita, Jr., Jim Shooter, and Jim Valentino.

"Everything we do at New York Comic Con is about experience," Show Manager Lance Fensterman said. "While the show is only three days in April, we endeavor to create something that'll remain for a lifetime in memory, and out of everything we're planning, it's the talent and interaction in Artist Alley that may be many attendees' favorite memory."

New York Comic Con 2008's Artist Alley is the result of months of work from NYCC's team and also one of NYCC's most-asked-about attractions. The complete listing is available now at newyorkcomiccon.com and also appears below…

For anyone who has had experience with going to an artist alley, I plan on making it to the WWPhilly one, but am clueless on how the entire process works. Like if I wanted to have something drawn up I just wait in line with a blank sketch page? If I wanted a certain piece ink I would assume the same thing? Cash up front, etc.

Some artists will sketch for free for people in line, some will do it for a fee for people in line, some will take a list at the beginning of the day (or the beginning of the show) and work off of that list in their free time. Bringing paper is always a good idea, as is reference - even if the artist has drawn the character a lot, it never hurts to have it. For a lot of artists, you'll want to get to them first thing and find out how they're doing it - at many shows, the more popular artists fill their sketch lists within minutes of the show opening. Adam Hughes, for instance, has such a devoted following that people will line up outside of the show hours ahead of time to get on his sketch list. If you can, you may want to (politely) inquire with the artist ahead of time what they'll be doing at the show, so you'll know. Whatever happens, be polite - I've seen people yell at artists for closing a sketch list/not getting to their sketch/whatever. Remember that they're _not_ there just to crank out art for you.

Good luck!

Mike

What an incredible artist alley list! Dick Ayers! Nick Cardy! Basil Gogos! Joe Simon! Joe Sinnott! And many other creators I've longed to meet.

Anyone who is able to make it to this con is very lucky indeed. Unfortunately, it makes me acutely aware of just how lame the Wizard World Chicago artist alley is in comparison. (The only major con within driving distance for me.)

*sigh*

I can't wait!
This will be my first NYCC, and first time in New York!

Looks like an amazing list, very cool to be a part of. :cool:

Rule 1 - If you see gum on the street, leave it there; it's not free candy.

Rule 2 - The men outside the Port Authority saying they can get you into the movies are lying.

Rule 3 - The Naked Cowboy is not a convention-goer.

How times have changed. Con sketches used to be free, and only a handful of guys would charge, and even then 20 bucks was a big deal.

I'm in the unfortunate position of the people who I still want to get sketches from charge the sky, and I'm just never in a position to afford their (well-earned) services.

I mean, look who I'd be going after...

* Mark Buckingham
* Bernard Chang
* Sean Chen
* Olivier Coipel
* Amanda Conner
* Dale Eaglesham
* Ramona Fradon
* Keith Giffen (owed me a sketch since 1993)
* Rob Liefeld
* Kevin Maguire
* Mike McKone
* Rags Morales
* Todd Nauk (sp?)
* Louis Small
* Arthur Suydam
* Art Thibert (Last of the 90's Superman team I need, I believe)
* Ethan Van Sciver

See what I mean? And that doesn't even include the GoHs like Neal Adams, who I believe charges money to sign his credit card slips.

The rest I either already have, or don't know well enough to say I would or wouldn't.

It's fun to show people a sketch they did 10-15 years ago. Luckily I'm not so pompous I expect them to REMEMBER they did it.

Usually a quick look through my collection will soften the most mercenary of hearts, tho. (See link below)

Alright Wizard World Philly, it's time for you to step up to the plate and bring in some big names as well for this year.

Not that it would stop me from going if you didn't:D

vbartilucci:

I just spent a good while looking through your Norbert sketches. What a spectacular collection! (And highly amusing theme!)

You certainly have an incredible list of artists who have drawn for you. I am especially jealous of the drawing by Creig Flessel, altough there are many others that are equally as impressive.

Thanks for sharing!

I think Buckingham does free sketches at company booths. I got a free one at SDCC in 06. He's a really slow sketcher, though. They look great, but he might only get through three or four in an hour.

Yeah, the company booths are a godsend. As long as it's not some super-poplar person whose line extends to three feet from my front door, you can usually get a good sketch there.

And I must amend my list - I also need Dan Jurgens to do a Norbert to complete my set of 90's Superman creators.

Ok first time going to a Comic Con...so aside from sketches will they sign issues of comics they done? Like Van Sciver signing Sinestro Corps War Special or Olivier Coipel signing an issue of Thor..

That is what 80-90% of the people on line will be doing. Some will be asking them to sign dozens of books at a clip. Be prepared to be patient and polite.

Good, thanks for replying....yeah I figure that those two (as well as Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, or Steve McNiven) will have rather long lines, so I'm sure I'll wait... and I'm lining up for:

Simone Bianchi
Olivier Coipel
Peter David
Marko Djurdjevic
Dale Eaglesham
David Finch
Ron Garney
Bryan Hitch
Greg Horn
Geoff Johns
Jim Lee (I bet he will have a HUGE line)
Steve McNiven
Ivan Reis
John Romita, Jr
Ethan Van Sciver

Hopefully next year Jim Cheung and Chris Bachalo can make it...

Lee has had a huge line at every show I've seen him at in the last five years - I doubt this one will be any different.

When artists are sketching at a major publisher's table they will still sketch for free as they are there on the company's dime. Marvel and DC both set up at NYCC and have many people lined up to sketch and sign books.
Otherwise expect to pay anywhere from $20 to $100 per sketch, depending on the artist and how in demand their work is.

Or more, there's quite a few artists in excess of $100 these days.

I spent half of my day last year waiting in Steve McNiven's line at the NYCC, and was one of the few who got a sketch from him. Very nice guy, but whew is he sloooooow...! Be prepared to get in his line early and wait... and wait... and wait...! But IMO it was worth it:

http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Page=1&Order=Date&Piece=283794&GSub=11273&GCat=0&UCat=0

I honestly can't remember if he charged for it or not, or how much. I'm thinking it was in the Reasonable range (20-40 bucks). I remember him talking a lot about the "eBay crowd" making all the artists wary of drawing anything for nothing, then seeing it pop up for sale the next day. Can't blame them for wanting to make some cash for their efforts. But it does make for a different con experience than I enjoyed in the 80s, when the biggest concern was how much time you'd have to talk to and/or get a sketch from artists; now the much bigger concern is how to budget your cash for sketches. Oh, well, at least you can still chat and get comics signed for nuthin' (with rare exceptions).
