View Full Version : Favorite Spider-Man Rogues

Well since Matt said post a thread about favorite things the Rogues demand their thread before all else!! After all these are the fellas that make Spidey's life so interesting. And there's just so MANY of them to torment old Pete.
And to start off I give you my favorite Spidey Rogue.. THE HOBGOBLIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b281/Frost327/Hobgoblin/Hobgoblin.gif
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b281/Frost327/Hobgoblin/SquanderedLegacyPart4A.jpg
Why does he deserve a mention? Because of the impact of the character. The mystery into his very identity for most the 80s lead to some of the best Spidey tales ever written by Roger Stern and Tom DeFalco. His presence STILL has an impact on the supporting cast namely Betty Brant as shown by PAD's protrayl of her in Friendly Neighborhood.
And the best thing is he hasn't even made an appearance for over ten years now. Even not appearing the character's presence still invokes fear into the heart of Spidey. And best of all unlike the other Spidey Rogues. Old Hobby has a happy ending.. sort of. Just in the way that he's free and enjoying retirement in the Carribean. :D

How many Spidey Rogues can say they've done that? So post more of our fav Spidey Rogues!!

Dr. Octopus is my favorite. He's the first guy to ever beat Spider-Man, he's the smartest foe Pete has, he's a schlub/nerd but can be a hardcore dude, and he's had the best portrayal in the movies.

Yep the Spider-Slayer with J. Jonah via a tv head was the first Spider Slayer :D
Same goes for Hobby. He was in the first comic I ever got (the second being a Marvel Tales reprint of the Shocker) ah Amazing #275. What an issue. :D

I was obsessed with the Larsen era Sinster Six as a kid. Sandman, Electro, The Vulture, Doc Ock, The Macendale Hobgoblin(I learned later Kraven was cooler) and Mysterio. The Vulture is an awesome cranky old dude.

Same here when I got fully into comics when I was 13. Though I enjoyed Doc Ock's cockiness (after getting his little adamantium upgrade) and also the Vulture's crankiness and knowing when to fly the coup.
I remember this other tale I have of him I found when I was a kid though I don't remember how I got it. Pretty much it's Spidey vs. the Vulture in the Nevada desert where the later is trying to kidnap the businessman who ruined his company. The fact the Vulture was willing to make the man a freakin trophy to his collection I can understand why I never remember it. Damn was that creepy as heck.

man, i've never read a good hobgob story. they need to reprint all that stern and defalco stuff.
I love Doc Ock. So BKV's mini was so delicious.
I also like Venom when he's well done. I like Green Goblin when he's done right.
I really like Tom DeFalco's recent creation, Black Tarantula alot as well. I kinda felt that JMS was redundant in creating Morlun when BT existed, though I still love the first couple Morlun stories.

I'm a sucker for the more "small-time" Rogues, so I'd have to say my favorite would have to be . . . the Beetle. Followed closely by Hydro-Man. I always liked Hydro-Man better than Sandman.
For the big name villians, I'd have to say my favorite is Dr. Octopus.

VENOM is and will always be my favorite.
I always loved the psychology (or lack thereof) of CARNAGE, because sometimes some people are so completely sick and twisted that trying to quantify their behavior on a scale of good and evil is so confoundedly impossible that there's only one explanation for their existence: one of the worst evils is that which does evil just because it can. A monster that lacks rhyme or reason and acts entirely on whim is both sinister and frightening because you never see it coming; CARNAGE is too random to predict, and that makes him a perfect bad guy.
I also really like ULTIMATE GREEN GOBLIN and THE LIZARD. That pilot episode of SPIDER-MAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES with THE LIZARD was amazing, and hooked me for life. A similar love was created in me for THE HOBGOBLIN, through that TV show.

Mark Hamill sure did a good job with that voice. The only thing about their version of Hobgoblin is that it was supposedly Jason Phillip Macendale, who was always kind of a joke in the comics. They probably combined a couple different versions of Hobgoblin to get their version.
That cartoon is also what cemented my view that the Kingpin is a Spider-Man villian. That's right. Daredevil who? :D :p

They did, as noted by the fact it took three years to finally unmask the Hobgoblin ala the original. And in the end being powerless was his downfall as was the falt with Macendale. But still the two parter with Hobby and later the episode he appeared in the crossover with X-Men was gold. That was all classic original Hobgoblin :D

Mysterio is an excellent villain for MARVEL ADVENTURES-type books.
I remember back in the early 90's, Marvel had a SPIDER-MAN adventures comic that told stories in the vein of the animated series and Mysterio always made such great appearances there. I still have a lot of those comics in a box somewhere, and can't wait to unpack them for my kids in a couple of years. I almost wish they'd go back and collect all that material, because I'm always looking for good stories to put in the hands of new readers.

My numero uno Spidey baddie is the Vulture. He never gets the appreciation he should, but he's great.
I also dig: Doc Ock, Mysterio, Scorpion, the Shocker, the Spot, Hydro-Man, Swarm, and, um, pretty much all of them. Spidey's got an excellent rogues gallery.

Doc Ock and Electro are mine. I also always loved Spidey's fights with the Kingpin and normal mobs run by colorful bosses like Big Man, Hammerhead, and The Rose. If you remember Norman Osborn's original goal was to become the king of the underworld before he got caught up in his Spidey obsession.

I think Dr. Octopus, Mysterio, and Lizard are up there for me.
When I was a kid, I was a big fan of Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends and I must have read that one comic they put out a million times...so I was definitely into Green Goblin.
And one of the earliest Amazing Spider-Man comics I remember reading was around the 220s when he fought Juggernaut. Not really a Spidey rogue, but man, those were awesome issues!

My favorite Spider-Man villain award goes to Dr. Octopus, I always felt that he was what Peter would've been if he didn't go down the right path. I absolutely adored the way Erik Larsen depicted him in the white business suit because it had the appearance of a professional, a true master of his craft and I loved the arms that accompanied him because aside from it being an awesome visual, it was really deceptive in nature.
After that it's Hobgoblin, Mysterio, Venom (Eddie Brock), Green Goblin (Norman Osborn), Shocker, Electro, Chameleon, The Rose and Kraven the Hunter. Unquestionably, Spider-Man has one of the greatest rogue's gallery of all time.

Boomerang

He started off as a Hulk villain I believe, but I've enjoyed the times he has went up against Spider-Man. In particular, Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man issues #67 and #73 and Amazing Spider-Man #280 and #281. Also, the Deadly Foes of Spider-Man #1 - #4.
Silvermane
http://www.spiderfan.org/characters/file_photo/silvermane.jpg
I really enjoyed the Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man issues #69 and #70 and then later on in #93 - #96. It involved Silvermane becoming a cyborg and guest starring Cloak and Dagger.

Anyhow, other faves:
Shocker:
Herman is just so hapless you can't help but root for him, and when he beat the snot out of Spidey in Deadly Foes of Spider-Man, it was awesome.
Scorpion:
Mac Gargan is another screw-up who needed a break so bad, and he's finally getting it in T-Bolts.
