Hey Folks -
Matt here. I've started this new forum as a place for discussions about Spider-Man with Steve Saffel, author of Spider-Man: The Icon, a new coffee table book all about Spider-Man, from his stories, to his world, to his merchandise, toys, and more.
Steve's going to be stopping by as often as he can to join in the discussions about Spider-Man and answer any questions you may have about the book. Feel free to start threads (favorite Spider-Man issues? toys? Looking for information on a Spider-Man item?) but please be respectful of others and the forum, and keep the threads in this forum specific to Spider-Man and Spider-Man: The Icon.
Thanks!
MattB
ps - Steve may be a touch late in getting to the forum this weekend, as he's appearing at a signing in Charlotte, NC. Rest assured, he will be here.

Awesome, when is this supposed to come out? If the dude is doing Spidey merchandise, PLEASE include all the crazy Spider-Man stuff from the 70s. Particularly the Web Fluid they used to sell... no idea what that stuff was, but I'm sure it wouldn't be safe for kids today.

This is just going to make me remember all the cool crap I had as a kid, and no longer have, which will just depress me...

I wonder how big the chapter of the Clone Saga will be and the reboot with John Bryne.

Spider-Man needs his full arsenal back: chopper, mobile , boat.
They need to reproduce the soft-head spidey.
There was also a hard-cast spidey that could scale a web.
Stretch spidey! (do not leave on radiator)

I had that!!! I think it ended up on top of the roof:(
I really want to know how Spider-Man became involved with the Electric Company and why the decision to make him a somewhat creepy mute?

I really want to know how Spider-Man became involved with the Electric Company and why the decision to make him a somewhat creepy mute? Clearly because Letterman couldn't fight all of the crime himself.

Does the Who Are the Green Goblin and Hobgoblin mystery fiasco or Shocker get a mention?

Not to look ahead or anything, but is this a one-shot, or could we see future volumes on other Superheroes? I have to think a Superman or Batman volume could do equally well.

I'm surprised that he talks about the comics in this at all. I thought it was supposed to be a multimedia thing...either way cool. Actually, the fact that he talks about the comics makes me wanna get it.

Steve ...loved this book. I got one of the limited versions. The pics Sy sent you are great. I would love to see you in Charlotte but its a no go...even though I am in Raleigh. Would you consider posting these "thoughts" on his (Sy's) site too?...As you can guess I am a collector in the same vein as Sy. Again thanks for such a wonderful book...I have waited years for something like this.

I think the idea was to simulate a comic book, so all of his thoughts and dialogue were in balloons. It was pretty weird, but it worked, and Spidey ended up in thousands of classrooms nationwide!
The whole thing came about when Richard Nixon put forth an initiative requiring more educational programming for children. Children's Television Workshop hired actor Paul Dooley as their story editor, and the Electric Company was born. As of the fourth season, Spidey had become a regular, joining such luminaries as Rita Moreno, Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel, Morgan Freeman, and Bill Cosby.

Of course, future volumes will (in part) depend on the success of this one. As an author, I'd never ask a publisher to do anything that doesn't stand a decent chance of becoming a success. Then again, if the Spidey book is a hit, it may be the folks at Marvel and DC who clamor for more.
So spread the word!

Well I put it on my Christmas wish list so who knows if a friend or family member will buy it for me. Still might be thinking of getting it for a cousins for Christmas as well.
