The Necromancer: Pilot Season one-shot is due out on Halloween, and given the subject matter it's appropriate. The Necromancer concerns young Abby van Alstine, who shares a connection with a demon that threatens to consume her body and soul. Saved for the time being by a mysterious mage and put into a normal school life, her supernatural past won't leave her alone.

We've talked to The Necromancer: Pilot Season writer Josh Ortega last week, and now we turn to the one-shot's artist, Jonboy Meyers.

Newsarama: Jon, how'd you come aboard Top Cow to draw Necromancer; Pilot Season?

Jonboy Meyers: Ahh well, that's easy--former series artist Francis Manapul is a good friend of mine and he had just wrapped up Iron and the Maiden and working on a French GN and Legion Of Superheroes with JimShooter over at DC--he didn't have a lot of time to work on the Pilot Season so he kindly recommended me for the spot to Necromancer's creator and writerJosh Ortega, and Josh took a look at some of my work and poof here we are... Francis thanks buddy!!!!

NRAMA: Were you familiar with the previous Necromancer series before you signed on?

JM: Oh yeah like I said Francis would show me pages of Necromancer when he was first working on it--and me being blown away with just seeing the pencil work--I was pretty keen on picking up the mini-series when it came out. It was a bit nerve racking for me working on the pilot season book though, since following Francis is no easy thing--he's really really talented and well me, I think I have a long way to go still.

NRAMA: How would you describe this issue and Abby?

JM: It picks up a couple of months or so after the mini series--Abby is pretty comfortable with her new life and is now seeking answers to things laid out in the mini series. She's definitely more confident and stronger in her skin so to speak-- And well we learn that a lot of things and people are not who and what we think they are. I hope that doesn't let the cat out of the bag--but it's pretty interesting to see how that plays out if Necromancer is picked up for a new series.

NRAMA: What was your favorite part of drawing this issue, and why?

JM: Well drawing a cute heroine like Abby is a real treat--she's just so darn cute and spunky--and there's quite a bit of action too--and action scenes are pretty fun to draw--especially the whole scene where Abbey uses her magic to --oh wait I can't give out anymore spoilers.....but lots of action which is a real treat to draw.

NRAMA: Should Necromancer be voted in as the winner of the "Pilot Season" contest, are you on board to do more issues?

JM: Yeah I hope so, since that means I'll have a steady job. [laughs]

But yeah I hope it wins, I really tried to push my shots and make the art as Top Cow worthy as possible--some of my best stuff I think to date. But it's too early to tell who's going to get picked up and who's not--but if it does end up on top, I'd very much like to work on a Necromancer Series. The art on each Pilot Season book is pretty dope, I'm really digging the Velocity stuff I've seen--can't go wrong with that Kevin Maguire guy--he's a solid artist.

NRAMA: What are you working on next?

JM: Oh yeah, I'm right in the middle of wrapping up a Gen 13: Armageddon one shot with Christos Cage--and it's nice to be working on a book that I grew up with and really dug--I still can't believe that Gen13 is over 10 years old now--man I feel like such a geezer--I'm also working some some JLA back-up stuff over at DC. I've got a couple other things lined up too--but I don't want to say anything until those projects get the greenlight. I'm also wrapping up some more illustration stuff for the World of Warcraft card game from Upper Deck too-those are a lot of fun to do and it's nice to get away from comics every once in while and do some fantasy based stuff. I just really feel so blessed to be working with great writers and great books--and I hope people enjoy the work the writers and myself are doing and I very much appreciate all the support.

The Necromancer: Pilot Season is scheduled for release on Halloween day, October 31st. Cool art and it sounds like an interesting story. The art matches the tone of it well.
I'll be checking it out!

Never seen his stuff before but I like it. His style looks so much like a cross between Campbell and Madureira... especially that last panel with the demon-thing, looks like he channel Joe Mad right onto the page. He definitely read the same comics I read in highschool, and, unlike me, mastered those skills. This will be the 'Pilot Season' I actually pick up.
I might've missed it, anyone know when the "Necromancer: PS" comes out?

Aside from having mad talent, check out his Riot Grrrl story in the Image Low Orbit anthology btw, Jonboy is a heck of a nice guy!!

I already enjoyed Necromancer, but I'll be supporting anything he does for sure.

FYI, he's also got a cover on the new Super Real Special in shops next month ;)

If you like Jonboy's artwork (and I do), he also helped with the pencils on the last Danger Girl miniseries (that would be Danger Girl: Body Shots).

Jonboy is the man!

He helped out with a few illustrations for one of my books and you couldn't ask for a nicer or more professional artist. I hope Necromancer gets picked up because Jon should never be short on work!
