When I was a child I often played with a Super Powers Batman figure. After watching the Adam West Batman I noted my Batman (although very cool) had ears much too long. So I cut them off...
Then a neighborhood boy (I forget his name) told me if Batman has 'no ears' he has no powers.
So the question stands would you still buy Batman if he were depowered?

I think Batman would be cool if he lost his powers. He'd then have to rely upon his cunning and intellect; train his mind and body to human perfection and then become the world's greatest detective. But he'd still need an edge. Something to strike fear into the hearts of criminals who are, by and large, a superstitious and cowardly lot.

I'm taking this thread as a snarky, satirical question: Batman's "powers" for a long time have been his ability to magically know exactly what to do all the time to the point that it's not even remotely believable. When Batman saves the day on the Justice League, a little part of my soul dies a painful death. He should have died in any number of Justice League battles or events, but his power is to continue to live despite bullets, lasers, superpowerful aliens and superpowerful alien technology.
I don't see what everyone's so confused about. There've been even more subtle sarcastic threads posted that people got right away.

I guess you missed out on the joke a few months back. One of the locals made the assertion that Watchmen was written by Grant Morrison. And despite the attempts of many posters who corrected him, he held firm to his assertion. Thus, it became a running joke. Someone went so far as to edit the Watchmen wikipedia entry to say "Written by Grant Morrison". Every so often, the joke pops back up again, this time with a photoshopped cover faking the writer's credit.

What am I wrong about? I was asking what would happen if that happened? They are still questions that need answering aren't they?
And, I've seen it - if the Sub-mariner gets his little wings ripped off he flys all wonky-like...
So, what you're saying is, if Batman loses his ears, he can no longer fight crime, as he is powerless to stop it?
He would have to become like Oracle, but instead of wearing an earpiece/phone thing, he would have to have all his conversations transcribed to him, or get someone to sign language-translate them for him. But he would still be a very good asset to the superheroic community.

Hehe, I was going to say something about him becoming similar to Oracle. Or taking over Monitor duty full time. Or if by powers, we mean physical ability, he'd let someone else be Batman. Wasn't that what he did when Bane broke his back?
In any case, I'm sure he prepared for the eventuality of him losing whatever makes him Batman. Either he'd try to get it back, or he'd find a way to get Nightwing or Tim retake the mantle. Batman is an identity he can pass on.
Also, I thought this was a sarcastic spin off from/parody of the "stupidest question" thread.

Other than the Golden Age Batman, or alternate Elseworlds style stories I am unaware of any point in time that Batman has ever died, please elaborate and specify, because otherwise I'm pretty sure you're wrong, very, very wrong.
1. The JLA story arc "The Obsidian Age," written by Joe Kelly. Several members of the JLA get killed during a trip to the distant past. Including Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.
Of course, by the time it's all over, they've been magically brought back to life in the present day.
2. The graphic novel "Batman: Birth of the Demon," written by Denny O'Neil in the early 1990s (in the days when Denny was the editor in charge of all Batman projects, and he sure didn't feel the need to label it "Elseworlds" or anything like that).
Much of this novel is flashback sequences filling us in on the origin story of Ra's al Ghul -- whom Denny had created a couple of decades earlier -- showing us the days when Ra's (not yet using that name) was just another hard-working, clean-living physician in an (unnamed, I think) city somewhere in North Africa, hundrds of years ago. But some of the scenes are set "in modern times" as Batman and Ra's clash. Toward the end of the novel, Batman takes a mortal injury. Then, as I recall, he falls into a convenient Lazarus Pit, which automatically does what Lazarus Pits do best and raises him from the dead, good as new!
That's two examples, both "in continuity" as far as anyone has ever said, that I can think of right away. There could very well be others! :)

Batman losing his ears isn't comparable to Superman losing his spit curl. It's comparable to Superman losing the S on his chest. The ONLY way Batman could continue being Batman without his ears is this..........................he must instead wear fuzzy earmuffs AND lipstick (if you really meditate on it, the lipstick is a must and it MUST be bright!). In that sense he is more invincible than Superman who unquestionably COULD NOT GO ON WITH ANYTHING BUT THE "S" on his chest. as nerdy as that was, i'll trump you and say it's not an S that's on his chest. it's kryptonian
dinkgms
09-29-2007, 05:32 PM
I haven't been trumped because although it is Kryptonian it is a Kryptonian S which is why I call it an "S". Doesn't matter, he still must have it (apparently on two planets not just ours..............not to mention 51 other universes).
Even Superman refers to it as an S, probably because he grew up using English. But Supergirl does it, too, and probably even Power Girl. And they're supposed to have grown up Kryptonian.
I think it's the symbol for the House of El and also the word/symbol for "hope". And who knows how difficult to say the proper word for it would be in Kryptonian. And no one will understand anyway.
Though if Superman lost the S on his chest he'd either have to become Power Girl's sidekick, or be imprisoned by the Green Lantern Corps! By gosh, you may be onto something! When Superman took Prime's S, Prime lost his powers! Prime had to carve an S on his chest to retrieve them! ;)
So... all those artistic differences in how Batman's ears are drawn, they're metaphors/in-story clues on how powerful Batman is in the comic? So, Batman will have more trouble in the comic if he's depicted with short ears, while if he's depicted with long ears, it emphasizes that he's not going to be in much trouble?

To be fair, those panels sort of semi-support the idea that cutting off the ears will diminish part of his 'power' as Batman. That silhouette just isn't as scary as a full-on Bat-demon in the shadows. Of course, once you get past that, and he gives the Batglare, you'll probably get as Batscared as Blue Beetle.

Would earwax be Batman's Kryptonite, then?
I think it's more like his lubricant. It makes the Batman into a slippery foe.

In your sig, you have a clip of Jennifer Love Hewitt Bouncing in her bra. My question is, what movie was that?????? I must see it.
The movie in question is Heartbreakers.
Robin can't lose his powers since he has none.
He has the power to be incredibly well-muscled and.. get kissed by random girls... and have people he has contact with die.
Hey. Maybe he's a Warder. :P

I think I would have to try it first. Like maybe an Elseworlds story about a world exactly the same as Earth 1, only Batman had no ears - just to see how it would affect the mythos. Alternatively, I'd read a story about Batman having his ears broken, only to be replaced by a character with bigger ears.

It's from Deadpool/Great Lakes Initiative Summer Fun #1. It came out a few months ago - there are a few pages from an old 'preview' here:

And, for the bit with Squrrel Girl and Penance (and where SG "pwns" Doctor Doom):

I bought Batman through the atrocious Winick run... I'll buy pretty much anything.
I also have a 25 year run going so I'm not gonna break that either.

A few days ago AceOfKnaves wanted to know if I could back up my assertion that Batman has already died a few times. Ace mentioned the death of the Golden Age Batman and the fact that it's also been known to happen in some Elseworlds (or similar stories of alternate timelines), but he had some serious doubts about whether it's ever happened to the guy who's the regular Batman in DC's modern continuity.
Asking me to provide examples was certainly fair, so I responded by mentioning the JLA's "Obsidian Age" arc, and also Denny O'Neil's "Birth of the Demon" graphic novel. Both of those stories had Batman die and then make a full recovery (in the second case, thanks to a Lazarus Pit).
However, I failed to mention another arc that raises Batman's "died and came back" score to remarkable heights. Toward the end of the "Emperor Joker" arc, we learned that Joker had been using his godlike powers to torture Batman to death every night, then bring him back to life so that he could do it all over again tomorrow night, and so forth. I don't think we ever got an exact count (earlier today I quickly glanced through a TPB collection to refresh my memory, but I didn't read the whole thing cover-to-cover and I may have missed something), but it appeared it must have happened dozens of times.
After the Joker had been depowered, Superman and the Spectre talked about Batman's situation. He was on the verge of mental collapse because of the accumulated horror of his clear memories of all the awful things Joker had done to him, over and over and over . . . Superman finally volunteered to have those memories of everything Batman had experienced during the "Emperor Joker" events be cut-and-pasted from Batman's brain to Superman's, so that Batman wouldn't remember a thing about it and would be able to keep his sanity and stability (such as they are).
So I would say that "in modern continuity," the Batman of the regular timeline of the DCU has died and magically come back to life at least 30 or 40 times, at a bare minimum . . . but he apparently only remembers two of them ("Obsidian Age" and "Birth of the Demon.") But just because he no longer remembers the dozens of other times doesn't mean they didn't really happen! :)
Wow, Batman owes Superman more than he thinks. And Superman is ... really nice.
Although I think if Batman knew what Superman did, he'd be mad that Superman risked unleashing a mentally unstable Superman on the world. :P
