"The City is a Garden"
This issue of Batgirl focuses of the creation of an "artistic botanical garden" in Crime Alley by an artist under a grant from the Wayne Foundation. We start with Cassandra and Batman chasing a car of theives who almost run over a crazy old man drawing his "perfect city" map using chalk across streets and walls.
We're then shown how Cassandra language skills are progressing and that she is picking up the "hip" phrases. Cassandra accompanies Bruce and Oracle to the unveiling of the Crime Alley art Project and Batgirl is introduced to "art." There she meets the artist, Chris (a young guy, not the crazy old man from the car chase), who doesn't care for Bruce, but is happy to use his money in order to continue his work.
Then they unveil the project and... is it just me or is crime alley now bigger than Jurasic Park? Chris sees his work as a new Garden of Eden and after entering people quickly strip off their clothes and frollick in the sunshine. Things seem great but quickly escalate as nightfalls the "happy" people turn to wild animals. A "mystery" villian is hinted at that is doesn't take a Dark Knight Detective to figure out.
Good-
Continued Development of Cassandra's language skills. I also really miss the Bat-Family going to social functions and having a presence in Gotham outside of costumes. So it was nice to see a Wayne Foundation Charity event for them to attend.
Bad-
What continues to bother me about this series since the departure of Scott Peterson, Kelley Pucket, and Damion Scott is the mediocrity and lack impact these stories have on Batgirl or the Batman line in general. This issues treats us to her almost kissing artist Chris and after the flirtations with Superboy and Blackwind this just seems a waste. This is a cookie cutter mystery that leads me to think that this title is unneeded. I love this character, but put her in Birds of Prey were she belongs and end this ongoing. She LIVES with Oracle for god's sake, it would seem as though she would be tripping over the missions Canary and Oracle are involved in, yet she's never shown. Move her to that book, end the ongoing, continue the charater, and strengthen the line.
