This is for those who like the character, just not the way she is done now.
Start fresh.
What would be her origin?
What would be her personality?
Who would be her supporting characters?
What would be her costume?
Who would be her creative team?

Last Daughter of Kryton.

She's called Powergirl.

Seriously though, I think what is missing from the current Supergirl is a sense of innocence that the original had.

What would be her origin? The only survivor of krypton in her reality crash landed in the antarctic.
What would be her personality? She grew up alone in the fortress of solitude making her more alien than superman and she also has no alter ego.
Who would be her supporting characters? Alternate version of the Justice League, oddly I think she'd still get along well with batman but he'd trust her even less than he does superman in this reality
What would be her costume? Like power girl with a fixed cape and no window or gloves, all in red with the S crest, did I mention she's a brunette?
Who would be her creative team? Whoever is good for the character.

Golly I like Al Rio...
Anyway, as for me I have no big kicks against the current Kara.
I get what they have been trying to do with her, I really do: a little punky, kinda messed up, a bit conflicted, a bundle of contradictions.
But I think there's something missing that's made her a tad unlikable to me; charm.
I think that's what the writers maybe have intended to do, but have failed at so far.
Because I think everything would go down a lot easier for folks if Kara had a bit more charm, a little kookiness, something endearing to her personality.
Again, I think that's what the writers on her title so far have intended, just haven't followed through on.
I think that's why so many people like Mark Waid's take on her; it's not that she's all that differant from her own book, it's just that she's got a little something extra.
To use Harry Potter as a metaphore (on chapter 13 now), Waid's Kara is basically a nice mix of Tonks and Luna Lovegood...

Thirded!

Also, it's a real pity that BatWolverine is missing this thread. Considering his hatred of the present version and his like/love of the previous version.

Same origin and costume. Her personality... Honestly, I'd make her A LOT like she was Pre-Crisis. Ernest and and naive. Kinda corny. But likeable. And, most of all, a hero. In both deed and personality. She could become more jaded as her series went on, but, I think, it's important for her to start off as purely good as Superman is.

The creative team. Honestly, I've been fine with the artists she's had. Although, I didn't like Churchill's later issues, the first four or so were great. As for a writer, probably someone like a McKeever or Johns or maybe even Waid. Definitely a writer that's experienced in writing light, teenager-based stories, with some love for the silver age.

Hopefully make her a little more like Linda and the classic! I'm getting a little tired of the present one. That B&B scene with the little girl outfit, that was scary. A little funny too, but scary. :o

You know, it's so funny.

Yesterday, I read the Superman story from Action Comics #1 for the first time in my life. And it makes me laugh my ass off when people say stuff like "she should start off as good as Superman."

I mean, yeah, he is the Champion of the Opressed. But he's a complete badass who threatens people every other page, and beats the crap out of wife-beater.

I liked her in B&B. A lot.

Is "Linda" the one that was in PAD's run? I read a trade of that and just couldn't get into it.

As for the "classic" ... I can't say I've ever read any of it.

Put me down for having Supergirl be like Mark Waid wrote her. That was awesome.

But like I said -- whatever Tony does with her, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. He's top notch.

I meant, she should start off her career as good as Superman is. Not that he started his history as a character as a completely good character.

Besides, the Superman of 1938 is hardly the Superman of today or any other era.

Besides, it's not like the Supergirl you gush over is even close to badass. IMHO, of course.

You didn't find it a little creepy that she dressed up like a little girl to try and attract Hal?

Yup, that's the one. I liked her, from what I read. It was so much better then Earth-Angel Supergirl. :)

I started with the classic version in her early appearances with Superman and the Legion followed by her Adventure Comics run. First DC heroine to change her costume as much a s a real girl would. And give Janet Van D a run for a little while for her money, so to speak.:D

My point was that "Superman" as a concept hasn't always been what a modern would call "good."

But what's the point? I'm fairly tired of arguing Supergirl, really. Look, I'm sure she'll be turned around in all sorts of ways in the coming months. A bunch of you guys will probably be happy.

I'm off for Bedard's issues. I'll see about coming back on when whoever is next is announced.

As for McKeever, I'd be so much more excited about it if it weren't Garza. Or, if it were the Garza who drew Graduation Day. I just don't like the stuff he's done with her in her own book, at all.

I skimmed it, saw it, moved on. It was just sooo....Lolita!

She was the "evolved" version of the MAtrix Supergirl that Peter David wrote prior to replacing her with Linda. I just couldn't get past Supergirl having flaming wings and flame vision and such. Probably more PD goodness, but I had a hard time trying to get past that.

Sadly, I don't think anything has accept for the Supergirl Archives and some of the Legion Archives. The Adventure line has never been collected. I mostly remember it being a little "Scooby-Doo-ish" in a sense. It was something like 1970 when she was the headliner. I also loved the occasional Bob Oksner drawn Supergirl, I think it's still one of the sexiest version done. It's one of the three comics series from that period I'd like to see collected - That plus the "Mrs.Peel" Wonder Woman and Roy Thomas' run on Dr Strange. I don't think they were great form what I can remember, but I liked them. I'd consider them comic-kitsches and something from my youth. A Black Orchid collection would be nice too, also from Adventure Comics but a little later. I'll try to get you specific issue #'s before the weekend!

Best Adventure Comics stuff other than Legion - The Spectre! :D

I like the DCAU character. I also liked the Kara that Jurgens created for Superman/Aliens. If they had been able to bring that character back to Earth and have her have been Supergirl, that would have been perfect. She had the perfect temperment and personality for a modern take on Supergirl -- not little miss perfect, but likable. A tough survivor. Unfortunately, we were stuck with that Matrix/Earth Angel mess at the time. Unfortunate.

This costume is good, and what's filling it looks good, but for me the characterization is off. I'm still so used to the classic version, but prefers "old Earth-2's" version best of the all. The present one is just to close to a typical teenager that I fond her, well, obnoxious more then anything else. Nice experiment, but needs perfecting. Maybe we'll get that very soon.

I'd like to see a Supergirl that's less angsty, a bit more wholesome and not so sure what it means to be human. I'd like to see her just a touch younger, and a costume more like Atom Eve's from Invincible.

Actually, they didn't. The ending was a bit ambiguous, but it seemed probable that Superman had succeeded in saving her. But since it was a DC/Dark Horse crossover, she's really never been seen since.

Personally, I wouldn't mind a PGvA crossover, (Superman's and Aliens have been done to death, and Supergirl is in everything else), that bring SvA Kara back...

Lack of comprehension? Complete and utter? Sure you're not over-stating?

She was flirting with Hal because she figured that was a good way to try and get on his good side, and because she was nervous.

By the time that she changed into the little costume, it was because she needed to trick the gamblers that she was no threat at all, and would get clobbered by the monsters in the arena.

The costume had nothing at all to do with Hal.

Cool. But are you totally sure? I'm not saying you're not, just that she has been portraited as being a typical "over-sexed" teen. Her attitude towards Nightwing comes to mind and did when I skimmed the issue. Could it be she was doing more then just what you said? Yep. I'm 100% sure.

And, honestly, she hasn't been portrayed as "over-sexed" at all. She had/has a crush on Nightwing. Teenage girls do actually develop crushes on hunky, heroic guys. It's a crush. It is not rational in any way. I mean, for crying out loud, she was drawing a picture of herself kissing Nightwing with a bunch of hearts all over it.

As to Hal, I mean, maybe she was fliriting with him because she found him hot. I don't think that was the case, but even if it were: Hal's like the DCU's #1 stud. I mean, why is it so weird that Kara would be attracted to a square-jawed, handsome, physically perfect, big damn hero like Hal Jordan, Test Pilot?

Plus, Kara is -- beyond Supergirl, the Maid of Might and Girl of Steel, the Last Daughter of Krypton -- a young woman. Young women, many of them, flirt. It's what they do. And it doesn't necessarily mean any more than that. Flirting is, like, genetically engrained in young women's DNA. :)

I really do like this current Supergirl. She's a nice girl, but with more layers than the average Supergirl we've seen. I like the stories of her trying to find herself. But more than anything, her book needs more direction. They seem to toss her from one crisis to another lately, and it sometimes feels like the book is struggling to avoid keeping her in one place long enough. She needs a life outside of costume(not necessarily a secret ID, which I can't see her having the patience for), but more in the vein of what we saw in Supergirl #9.
