Hey folks,
About a year ago, I discovered that both my local supermarket and my local Borders bookstore each had set up spinner racks. Being a supporter of comics being found outside, as well as inside, the direct market, I figured I'd do my part and grab a few issues here and there off said spinners of something I don't normally get off my pull list. So while I'm out shopping for Hot Pockets and Lunchables, I even get some comics shopping done. Anyway, now that we have this nifty review area, I figured I'd put up some reviews of some of these spinner pick-ups. First up:
Green Lantern #174
Writer: Benjamin Raab
Penciller: Jamal Igle
Inker: John Dell
Colorist: Moose Baumann
Letterer: Jared K Fletcher
Stephen Wacker: Associate Editor
Peter Tomasi: Editor
"Wanted" Part Four
In recent issues, Kyle Rayner has been hanging out in space, trying to bring about a new Green Lantern Corp, with the help of Ganthet and Killowog. Their first challenge is to stop an invasion of the mainline DCU by the Qwardians of the Anti-Matter Universe, led by Amon Sur, the evil son of Abin Sur, the Green Lantern who crashed on earth and gave his GL Ring to Hal Jordan lo those many years ago. Anyway, Kyle has infiltrated Amon's inner circle disguised as a warrior named Vazquez, and is carrying out a plan to defeat the Qwardians with some coordinated help from Killowog and the rest of the Corp wannabes. There are also a couple of subplots a-brewin' back on earth among Kyle's old friends Terry Berg and Jade.
This is pretty much a standard, straightforward space opera story, with some plot twists that are kind of predictable, but they work anyway. What really stands out is the art, which I think is great, and works well with this type of title. I'm not familiar with Igle's work, but I liked what I saw. There isn't anything exactly all that special about it, it's just that it does what it needs to do. Personally, I'd like to see more of his work in the future.
Overall, the issue merits a solid B.
