View Full Version : SUPER ARTICULATE DC DIRECT POLL 2: THE LEGION

MattBrady
07-10-2007, 06:41 AM
Though DC Direct has made over a dozen Silver Age Legion figures during the tenure of the line, the Legion in total has been absent for the past few years. With such a rich and varied history, fans are sometimes divided on what era of Legion history that they'd like to see represented in figure form.

So, our question is: Which Legion era would you want to see DC Direct pursue?

1) Finish the Silver Age
2) The Cockrum/Grell era
3) The Levitz/Giffen "Great Darkness"/Baxter Era
4) The Five Year Gap
5) The Zero Hour Reboot
6) The Waid/Kitson Legion

Argh.

For the love of god, go with the Zero Hour reboot look. They had the best, most interesting costumes by far. (and I have my proper respect and love for the Cockrum ones too, thank you very much, but there's no costume design in the world I love more than the post-Zero Hour Star Boy).

Ditto - always liked how there was a cohesive look running throughout the team.

That said, the Kitson designs are pretty spiffy too, and you can never go wrong with classic Silver Age stuff, or the awesomeness of the Cockrum stuff.

Phantom Girl
Triplicate Girl
Shrinking Violet
Bouncing Boy
Matter Eater Lad

Deram Girl
Karate Kid

Shadow Lass
Chemical King

Heck - even put in Kid Quantum in there (and a separate Superboy/Supergirl just for the Legion too).

I went with the Post-Zero Hour. It would be cool to get the Legion Lost characters, I always thought Shakari had a really cool design, and I'd think an XS to go with all my other speedsters would be awesome.

Ok with a few variations, Cosmic Boy, Timber Wolf, Saturn Girl this era is the same as the Cockrum/Grell. One difference is that Giffen finally made the faces look different and not products off the same assembly line.

I vote for this era too and based on the results, it's winning. Glad to see that we still have fans who remember the Great Darkness Saga (when Darkseid was really scary).

If I had to pick five for the first line

Lighting Lad
Cosmic Boy
Saturn Girl
Braniac 5
Chameleon Boy

and possibly
Colossal Boy (build a figure) C'MON! It's time!!!! and
Bouncing Boy (put a real painted ball in one of the boxes!!!) I DARE YOU!!

Star Boy
Timber Wolf

Dawnstar

GREAT DARKNESS SAGA ERA:
Saturn Girl
Element Lad
Blok
White Witch

Howsabout a build-a-figure Giant Boy in his red and blue costume??? And I'm not sure what "era" the Legion was in when I read them as kids in the "Superboy and the LoSH", but those were the best costumes, esp. Giant Boy and Polar Boy, and the lady who looks like the Sinestro Tales story teller in the current GL books.

Yeah it's all in good fun.

I was just told that companies are no longer doing "build a figure" as they are not profitable (whatever that means). It's a shame.

Also right after the Darkness saga, Giffen redesigned some uniforms. Timber Wolf, Colossal Boy, Element Lad. That would work for me as well.

Second time in my life I dropped a book for the art. (Though the really, really, really dark tone didn't help, and I generally really like DnA as writers too. I did come back on with Legion Worlds).

I voted Cockrum/Grell, but a lot of those costumes were still being used during the Great Darkness Saga. So either way, I'd be pretty happy (though the Giffen era would mean no bikinii-clad Saturn Girl -- :( ).

The only Cockrum designs that are an absolute must for me are Phantom Girl Timber Wolf. No other artist got these quite right -- and Brin had a few different costumes during the Giffen era -- though the one in GDS ain't bad -- still not as good as Cockrum/Grell era.

The only costume that really improved during Giffen's run was Cosmic Boy's. I like the amalgamation of the Silver Age costume with Grell's barely there design. It would be cool to get a White Witch and Blok from this era.

Oh, I'd also want Infectious Lass from Cockrum/Grell era -- even if she wan't a proper Legionnaire.

Yes, Timber Wolf briefly wore a costume designed by George Perez used at the beginning of the Levitz period when Pat Broderick was the main artist, and Giffen was the back-up. I love George Perez, but that was a horrible costume. Give us the real Dave Cockrum design for Timber Wolf.

They won't get my money for any costume design created after End of an Era. None of that is the real Legion.

But they could pretty much do anyone earlier than that...from Infectious Lass to Color Kid to Power Boy...and I would snap it up.

Ok for the record, the following designs where from the Darkness to the Five year gap. All the rest were left over from the Silver Age and Cockrum/Grell

Timberwolf - After the Perez Design, Giffen designed a short lived open shoulder suit
Phantom Girl - Very much like Phase from L.E.G.I.O.N.
Saturn Girl - Very retro, just darker
Shadow lass - Changed almost weekly, even sporting a Science Police uniform.
Dou Damsel - BEST COSTUME EVER!!!
Element Lad - With his Interlac E symbol
Cosmic Boy - again BEST COSTUME EVER
Shrinking Violet - Slight variation with vest
Colossal Boy - Sans harness

plus the addition of Invisible Kid and White Witch

Were there more?

It looks like the Great Darkness saga-era Legion is winning so far, which is fine (especially for the people who want the bearded Star Boy). I was one of the few who voted for the Five Years Later era (the earlier part, not the last part) so we can get some of the characters like Kent Shakespeare who we probably won't see show up otherwise. The one I'd really like to see, though, it the Five Year Gap Tenzil Kem figure ("Trust me, I'm a Senator"). :)

EDIT: One other thought just occurred to me though, it would be sweet if they could do figures based on the DC Presents issue with Superman and the Legion of Substitute Heroes - in addition to getting the Subs (and the people who weren't quite ready for the Legion of Substitute Heroes....) have an Ambush Bug figure, and a figure of the alien he grabbed and put Superman's cape on before dubbing him "Superman Two".

SouthtownKid

Giffen Legion for me, although I'd also be happy with Cockrum/Grell.

I'm a fan of the Adventure era Legion, but I was always disappointed DC Direct chose to go with that version to do their figures. I always felt they should have led with the version that represented the Legion at the all-time height of their popularity... which is the Levitz/Giffen Legion.

Dou Damsel - BEST COSTUME EVER!!!

I recall a black body suite with a very short hair style for Shadow Lass that debuted almost immediately after GDS.

While I have a fondness for the Duo Damsel costume from the 70s (designed by a fan -- not by Cockrum), I agree that the simple two-toned body suit with the chain belt from the Giffen era is her best costume to date. I'd buy three of these -- one as is -- and two to paint as orange and purple variants.

Yes, it was also brought to my intention

Block - Went from chain suite to multicolored tights
Dream Girl - Lost the belt (is that worth mentioning?)
Chameleon Boy - Color change and he lost his hood
Karate Kid - Went back to a variation of his original costume with large sleeves

What do you all think of the short lived Legion when they were reintroduced as heroes.
For example, Cosmic boy came back as Polestar. Spidergirl as Wave. Ultra boy as the Green Dragon I believe. And there were four Khunds that joined the team. Does anyone remember this era. I wouldn't call it the five year gap.

I would've enjoyed seeing a "rank" poll on this one. I'm very interested in characters from both the post-Zero Hour Legion and the pre/mid-Crisis era. I'll admit I'm a little unclear on the difference between the Cockrum/Grell costumes and what came after up until the Five Year Gap. (The gap stories I loved, and I'd like a Kent Shakespeare, but I don't much need figures.)

The only eras I'm not interested in are more Silver Age - the first sets aren't in scale anyway - or the Kitson stuff. Kitson's designs are strong, but for the most part, I just want the current incarnation of the Legion to go away.

OM

I love that my two favorite eras top the list.

Being that many of the cosutmes are virtually the same in the Cockrum/Grell era and the Great Darkness Saga, I would suggest that DCD do figure that best represent both eras.

For instance, Cockrum Grell must haves would be:

Karate Kid
Phantom Girl
Shadow Lass
Wildfire
Timber Wolf
Princess Projectra (I'd like Sensor Girl as well)
and maybe Infectious Lass

GDS must haves would be:

Invisible Kid II
Blok
White Witch
Cosmic Boy
Saturn Girl
Duo Damsel

I believe everyone else wore the same costumes in both eras. Star Boy, of course, had a beard in GDS, so I'd suggest an alternate head or variant figure of the clean-shaven Cockrum/Grell version.

And I would like to see full-scale versions of previous Legionnaires who retained their classic costumes into the 80s including:

Sun Boy
Mon-El
Matter Eater Lad
Bouncing Boy
Brainiac 5
Invisible Kid I

Quislet

I would enjoy any figures from all eras, since I've been collecting continuously since SUPERBOY & THE LSH split into two books through to the current series. What I voted for is the Cockrum/Grell era, and here's why.

The Cockrum/Grell outfits are by far the most iconic. Exhibit A is the two-page spread in JUSTICE #12. This is the *definitive* Legion, hands down. Making a Saturn Girl or Shadow Lass without these vamptastic outfits is a shame (this coming from a gay man), and this is is the classic period for fan-favorites Wildfire and Dawnstar, who are missing from most other potential eras.

The best part is that many of these costumes reach both back and forward in Legion history. Once a full run of Cockrum/Grell is completed some of the more prominent figures from before and after can be released in related groups. One set could have Saturn Mom, Sensor Girl, Interlac Element Lad, and Return to Lightning Lass, while another could be a dead set of classic Invisible Kid, Ferro Lad, Chermical King, and Triplicate Girl.

But above all else I just hope *any* era gets decided upon and put into production.

(For the record: there is a going theory that Dawnstar could easily be included in a future Crisis on Infinite Earths wave, should one occur, given her early prominence in that series)

I'll take everything created pre 1990. As long as the price point is down from DC Direct's insane $20.

Cockrum/Grell has 666 votes?!?!?!???

I voted to finish the SA Legion LA, But I would really like the 90's run, with XS.
(they're the group I customed in 5" scale before they were dismissed)

not having read the thread, what's word on Sup/LoSH toys?
McD in a few months and Mattell is when...?

next year? SDCC confirmation?

I always expected Cockrum/Grell would do well as figures -- but am not surprised that Giffen/Great Darkness Saga is in the lead. Several people voting for GDS expressed interrest in Cockrum/Grell as well.

I'd like an XS, but not the point of wanting an entire Legion wave or line in the reboot costumes. Maybe if DCD ever does a Flash Family wave?

Cockrum/Grell era costumes = bikinis or little else with the ladies and unfortunately Cosmic Boy and Colossal Boy. :D ;)

You are SO in the wrong galaxy if you're paying within 5 bucks of that PER, I kid you not.

I voted for finishing off the Silver Age but I'd also like to see the Cockrum/Grell era and the Great Darkness era sets of figures.

Ditto. But I admit that I'd buy just about any Legion figure they made.

The Cockrum/Grell era probably had some of the most dynamic costumes of any super-heroes in the history of comics. But I've always been a huge fan of the Levitz/Giffen era costumes as well.

It's a shame that they never really made any of the Legion girls, other than Saturn Girl (unless you count the various Supergirls.) In fact, the girls have been underrepresented in all of DC Direct's lines. Out of 14 standard figures (including Mordru), plus 7 in the PVC collection and 6 Minimates, all we got was Saturn girl in all three forms, and a Phantom Girl Minimate. Pretty sad for one of the only teams in comics history that's always been 30-50% female.

Luckily, the Heroclix crew have done much better!

Grell put Cos and Colossal Boy in speedos -- I prefer the Cockrum costume for Colossal Boy (which Grell also used at first -- as did Giffen -- I think it's the most iconic and has appeared on both Justice League Unlimited and Legion of Super-Heroes on TV). While most of the female characters did wear revealing costumes, Grell made these even skimpier.

I prefer the Giffen costume for Cosmic Boy. It uses the Grell design as a base, but isn't revealing.

I also prefer that Cockrum costume for Colossal Boy, it's the best of them in my eyes. I believe it did appear in both shows. Yup, Grell made them skimpier and I liked that to some degree.

Again, yup, he did do that or it also seems so to me. Personally I prefer the Sprouce Cosmic Boy costume. I think it just looked better and it lost the pink which was a plus for me. The Giffen is the next best for my tastes.

I want my Blok! My Invisible Kid II (with white stripe in hair!) My Gigi Cusimano!

And yes, its Silver Age, but my Proty! (Made of Silly Putty?)

I'll also accept Proty II.
