Three Strikes TPB
Published by Oni Press
Writer(s): Nunzio DeFilippis & Christina Weir
Artist: Brian Hurtt
I picked this trade up on the strength of the creators previous trade Skinwalker, and I must say I'm glad I did. Three Strikes is the story of Rey Quintana, a good kid who has made some bad choices. It is also the story of Noah Conway, a Bail enforcement officer who is sent to track down Rey after goes on the run. Why does he go on the run? Shoplifting. That's right, Shoplifting. Due to the Three Strikes rule, which adds a five year sentence for each previous strike which is added on to any current charges, Rey finds out that his shoplifting charge could land him in jail for 22 years.
While reading this book you really get a sense of who these characters are, and even though they are on different sides of the spectrum you will find yourself rooting for both of them. DeFilippis and Weir do a fantastic job with the characterization of both Rey and Noah and you really get a sense of who they are, and I genuinely felt that things would work out for the both of them. However stories like these rarely have happy endings.
Brian Hurtt of Queen and Country fame is a great artist and his style really suits the story.
If you are looking for a break from the spandex books than please check this book out, you won't regret it.
