MARVEL KNIGHTS 4 #4

WRITER:ROBERTO AGUIRRE-SACASA
PENCILER:STEVE MCNIVEN
INKER:MARK MORALES
COLORIST:MORRY HOLLOWELL

WOLF AT THE DOOR PART 4

"4" is the book that no one ever wanted. The "baby brother" book that cant get past the shadows of its "bigger brothers". Well, it is time for the light to shine. Aguirre-Sacasa is showing the industry why the Quesada and Jemas had so much faith in him. Roberto tells the story of a Fantastic Four that is more human than fantastic. He is truly trying to break from telling the traditional FF story. He is showing how Reed may be the smartest man in the world but that his humanity wasnt sacrificed in the pursuit of that knowledge. The usual portrayal of Reed is the guy who uses 25 words when five would do. That is not the Reed that Roberto writes. He writes a more well rounded Reed, who is more contemplative than talkative. His "Reed" does what is necessary and what come naturally to him. A very humble family man that takes more pride in his loved ones than his inventions. Reed is the focus of this particular issue, and many of the complaints that were raised of the improbabilities of the FF current situation are explained in this issue. In this story, Reed is simply trying to be a man with some pride and some dignity.Even though Roberto take on the FOUR is somewhat unique from previous incarnations, they all feel like they are in character which is rare feat in writing today.

Steve McNiven is simply the find of 2004. The powers that be need to sign this man for a long time to come. The subject matter of what McNiven is drawing is not the typical awe inspiring Kirby esque eye candy, but just a brilliant interpretation of the world around us.The beauty of his New York is equal to any Asgard or Microverse. Axel Alonso and Warren Simons should be congratulated for assigning Mark Morales to ink this book, because Mark's style fits Steve as much as it did Adam(X-FORCE)Pollina back when they were doing X-Force.Morry Hollowell is just one these new group of colorists, who just bring the best out of the artists they work with.

I am glad that Roberto and Steve didnt replaced the Waid/Ringo team, because the eyes who looked on their work would have been jaded by the backstage politics on how they got their assignment. With their own baby to raise , they are showing that they are fine caretakers of the FF legend.

GRADE A+

I've been wondering if I should get this book or not. Maybe I will take a look. Thanks for the review!

i completely agree. this has been one of my favorites, which is high praise coming from someone who is not a big FF fan. i would love to see McNiven on another book with characters i have more interest in, but now that the July solicits show that Namor will be guest-starring, i cant wait. Hopefully we will see Atlantis! i bet McNiven could make THAT beautiful.

Great review YDLM.

Personally, you were able to convince me because I have a problem with Reed as a character and the way you describe him interests me. I think I will at least check out the first arc.

im not a fan of the fantastic four myself. however this has been interesting, its a good premise to say the least although it does feel a little unrealistic. i especially liked the interaction b/w reed and tony stark. i really got behind reed in this issue having been irritated by him in earlier ones.

The series as a whole so far I'd probably give a B, but this issue was definitely A+ material. Who had tears in their eyes during the jumper scene? C'mon, show of hands ... I haven't had that happen in awhile.

This issue honestly popped the "bubble" that I had 4 on. I was thoroughly impressed. It explained why we're seeing the FF deal with the situation in the way they are. We saw Reed show that he was a human, with pride, dignity, and best of all compassion. Especially in the trying times he and his family is facing, it's nothing compared to the jumper.

This issue I'd give an A, the series so far is a strong B.

Quite the big bump, I know, but I just read this story, and man... one of the best stories I've read in a while. It was all very, very touching.

And yes, my eyes got wet during that jumper scene - not something that happens often.

I've been visiting this site for a few months and haven't posted yet. But I decided to sign up and reply to this thread. I've been reading MK 4 and I love it, it's one of the best books out there. The stories are so real. Issue 4 of 4 (wow that sounds weird) is hands down my favorite, it made me really think. So I think you guys who haven't yet, go out and try it. I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.
