Amazing spider man #506:

pencils:John romita.jr

writer:J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI

I must say that this storyline is going to be one of the best this year in Amazing Spiderman. The storyline now revolves around Peter's destiny as spiderman and what he must face to protect his family and friends. The art in this book is amazing and John Romita. jr will be missed when he leaves this title. The writing is intelligent, and I love what J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI has done to the original Spider-man.

Well.. I'd say Stracszinsky's entire run seems to be based around Peter's destiny as Spider-Man.. and with his being Spider-Man being fate, not just an accident. etc.

As for the action.. I think Stracszinsky's run is memorable more for its story than its action, because there is not much of it. The action is only secondary the the story, and thats how it should be. Thats why this run is my favorite Spider-Man run ever.

Also.. you should put your review in the correct format.

I'm sure Matt didn't write up that long sticky at the top for nothing.

ill second that A, and heres why:

I only recently jumped on ASM, about 5 months ago (with issue number 500), and i knew nothing about Ezekiel. I found this issue to be very accessible, so pick it up! it quickly became my favorite Spider-man book. JRJR art doesnt hurt either (especially considering i dont like Ramos or Bagley on SSM and USM, respectively) in fact, this issue makes me want to go pick up the trades for ASM to get more of this Ezekiel.

I hope you guys are forgiving of thread necromancy. :)

Anyhoo, I picked this one up at a grocery store, and yeah, I dig it. I haven't been following the series so this Ezekiel guy is new to me, but Straczynski wrote him in a way that it didn't matter- I got the gist of it.

Short on action, to be sure, but then again it is "Chapter One" and there are things that need setting up. More importantly, the setting things up is not dull- MJ's career woes, Peter and Ezekiel shooting the breeze, it all flows well. The dialogue is very, very good- I loved Peter ragging MJ about his potential freakishness, Aunt May talking about hats, I even liked the Michael Jackson knock-knock joke.

Good, moody art too. Spidey has a weird "bumpy" texture to his face, looks like his suit is molded or something- it's a neat effect. I love the giant man-made-of-spiders in the last panel.

I'll definitely be following this saga, assuming they keep it to one book.

The Book of Ezekiel: Chapter One

I’ve been anxiously awaiting this one since I saw the cover on the shelf of “comics shipping next week” at my local comic shop. This arc promises long awaited revelations about Ezekiel, for which I have been waiting since the character was introduced. I have always pegged him as a clone of Peter left over from the clone saga, but now I’m not so sure. I can’t wait to find out the details behind the bleedings which apparently keep Ezekiel alive, and also the mysterious spider-temple in South America. Ezekiel’s response to the thug Spidey was chasing at the beginning of the story seemed very out of character, which indicates something about him is different this time.

JRJR’s artwork was great this issue, as usual. I especially loved the cover, another of JRJR’s reflection in a skyscraper window theme, those never get old for me. I also loved the great shot of Spidey and Ezekiel perched against the detailed background of the city, the long panel on page 11. The way JRJR draws MJ is continually improving as well, and the shot on page 17 of Ezekiel and Peter sitting atop the building was nice. My only complaints about the art involve several of the panels appearing as if they were finished in a hurry. Also, one of the baddies pictured on page 18 isn’t mystical in nature, the Digger character. He was created during a gamma explosion at a mobster burial ground in Nevada, similar to the Hulk’s origin. Where is the mysticism in that? The gatekeeper character looks pretty corny, he reminds me of the villain composed of bees – Swarm.

Overall this was an entertaining issue, I can’t wait for the remaining installments to see how Ezekiel’s foreshadowed betrayal of Peter plays out.
