Well, let's get this started, shall we :) ?

SLEEPER VOL. 1: OUT IN THE COLD TP
Written by ED BRUBAKER
Art by SEAN PHILLIPS

This is the story of a troubled man. Holden Carver. He's a deep cover agent working for a criminal organisation, and this trade deals with how he gets mixed up in cat-and-mouse game (thank you, www.midtowncomics.com :) ) with the mysterious Tao, the leader of the organization. On top of that, he also has to deal with a romance with the dangerous Miss Misery, who you never quite know where you have.

The book starts with Holden having to go on a mission with a guy called The Nihilist, who Tao suspects is a mole. I won't go any further into details than this, because this is a book where it's best to know as little as possible. Okay, it might have connections with the Wildstorm universe, and a recap of any previous events, which I suspect there has been, could've been useful, but is only really a problem with the first chapter of the book - as soon as you get further into the story, there's no letting go of this book.

This is my first book by Ed Brubaker, but I suspect it won't be the last. He has written quite the criminal masterpiece here, mixing superhero adventure with gritty and agent stories - and it is a pleasure to read. He brings some clever ideas to a genre which has been tried before, while also adding a human side to every character in the book.

Sean Phillips is also an excellent artist for this book. It is very noir-ish and brings a dark atmosphere. On top of that, his layouts are quite different from other books. The colors in the book also add to the mysterious nature of his drawings.

What can I say about this book that hasn't already been said? Go pick it up. Don't be scared by the first chapter, but read on - you will without a doubt love it.

Grade: A

Reasonably. ;)

Good review. I picked up the trae last week and just started it last night. Great so far.

Hopefully, it won't go the way of WildCATS. But I think Brubaker is more of a player to DC right now. Hopefully...

They seem to be promoting it more than i ever saw Wildcats promoted, so hopefully it will stick around.

not a bad review christian :D
way to get the ball rolling.

i have to add that sleeper is a great read. the pencils are perfect for the book, but the colors sometimes just seem a bit off. but it's typically rough, gritty, and dark - perfect for the book. the writing is smart. can't wait for "season 2"!

To see Christian expand beyond Marvel comics... well, it brings a tear to my eye. Second book should be out in June, along with dun-dun-DUN... SEASON TWO! Support the monthly!
