So was Dawnstar always supposedly gay or was this thing from the Lightning Saga a recent development, and even possibly just part of cover when the Legion got given new personalities and memories?

She only was with Wildfire prior to this. Who knows, maybe the 30th/31st century is like the time period that Captain Jack Harkness form Torchwood/Dr Who? Goes both ways?
Wanna watch her? :p ;) :D

I've always thought Shikari was a different character from Dawny. Similar or same power, but different enough to be considered different characters.
You are so very right that seeing her again is great. She's one of the nicer designed gals out in the funny books. She's also another that takes no crap from anyone. I like that in a heroine, along with sass. They all can't be Pollyannas or just nice like Wonder Woman.

I agree. In fact, I miss Shikari too. It's a shame there's probably no good way of having them both on the same Legion.

Oh, and here are some notes and fan-stuff ...
I wrote what became an insanely long and passionate tribute to Dawnstar's return (http://tinyurl.com/37srk7), what with my contending and defending it against a couple of others, over on the DC message boards.
The image at the head of the thread is by, not George P้rez (who's done some superb renditions of Dawny, I'll bring 'em along), but Greg LaRocque and Larry Mahlstedt, from their feature in LSH v3 n17 describing the Levitz Legion.
I should know, since I tweaked the original image to put stars in place of the text box over her head, and posted it as an illustration (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Dawnstar-LaRocque-Stars.jpg) for Wikipedia's article on Dawnstar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawnstar).
And here is a lovely creation, using Poser, from my friend Shanfar508 over on Renderosity (http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php) ... (click for 800 x 750 image in new window)

Could you elaborate? Because, to me, having two winged female characters with which-way-do-we-go powers, who are close to Wildfire, is an inefficient way of structuring your cast of characters. But if you've got a way around that, I'm interested.

Neither of them have the same name nor the same origins. Even there powers aren't exactly the same. Just as Superboy and Ultra Boy's aren't the same and then theres's that Mon-El fellow. Sure they both have wings and track down people and both have warm fuzzies for Wildfire but it doesn't take much to work out a difference. If you want both, you'll work it out to your satisfaction. Hey, I'd have both and both Starboys too! As the writer of a comic is "God" to those characters, the writer can do anything. A little imagination goes a long way.
Plus I must point out - it's called the LEGION, not the Limited Group of Super-Heroes.
Let's have them all if a new version is coming!

A depiction of an ecstatic Dawnstar by Bruce Patterson, who worked on LSH before and during Levitz's second stint as writer, inking work by Janes, Ditko, Bender, Broderick, and Giffen, including the memorable v2 Annual 1. (I own the original art.)

Two bits of pro art from the books that always especially appealed to me. Speaking of Ditko and Patterson on art, here's the famous "shower scene" from the Legionnaires' visit to 20th-Century Smallville, battling the Molecule Master (part of the Reflecto tale), in LSH v2 n281 ...
http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/224/ditkodawnynudesc9.jpg
And this is just a single shot (by Jurgens and Kesel) of her taking off next to Brainy's one-man flyer for the Exile planet, seeing missing friends, in Tales of the LSH 320, but I always liked this fierceness in her eyes and throughout her body ...

Lastly (for this afternoon, anyway) ... here's a bit of fan art done upon my request by Dean Lee, what may be the only sketch of Dawnstar's whole Starhaven family.
http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/5561/leestarhavenfamilypp5.jpg
Surrounding Dawny, clockwise from top left: her father, Mistrider; her mother, Moonwalker; and her younger brothers Greatfire and {ahem! ;)} Greybird. ... Ten wings in one portrait!
Dawny's brothers are mentioned in her profile, but only by name, in Who's Who in the LSH 1. Her parents are depicted in several episodes set on Starhaven over the years, most notably "A Shared Destiny," the end of her galaxy-tour seeking her soulmate (LSH v2 n311, May 1984).

The first time I saw her ...
http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/2475/lshv2n2843gm.jpg
... was in a nearly lost comics venue, the spinner rack, at a 7-Eleven in December 1981. I was out of college and about ten years past any previous real interest in comics.
I remembered the Legion, from the late '60s, and being fascinated by it. Yet aside from an occasional glance inside, provoked by a dramatic cover, I hadn't picked up an issue in a dozen years.
This one, though? I'd had a fascination with winged humans since the same late '60s. (See the Yahoo! Group linked in my .sig below.)
So I thought, even with only seeing her from {ahem!} behind: Who IS this gorgeous creature?
I looked inside, saw her soaring out of an airlock with Ultra Boy (whom I remembered) and some well-built guy in a suit with a mirrored faceplate (also new to me) who said, "Natch, Dawny, you and I were made to fight in space" ... and I was hooked, on this lovely character, on her street-wise-cracking friend, and on this newly-attractive-to-me Legion.
Fortunately for me, this very issue began the second era of Paul Levitz's stellar plot writing. So I went forward happily from there.
When it started to get too much angst, after the loss of Superboy - see my next posting - I worked backward into finding more of the Levitz Mark One and Grell issues. (Before I could get to the source of the looks I liked, the Cockrum era, I ran out of spare cash. This being years before eBay came along.)
When "Five Years Later" cut the heart out of too much of what I'd come to love over seven years of reading, I gave up. For about a decade, before finding Legion fans on the Net. So then I found others who shared their vocal and visual passions for my lovely Starhavenite and her friends.

And, for me, the best Legion cover, ever.
http://img366.imageshack.us/img366/6774/coverv3n38fullfw2.jpg
Thank you, Bill Sienkiewicz, for showing the power of silhouettes.
I usually don't care to refer to winged folk as "angels," with that being a specific religious conception ... but with how this foreshadows the plot inside, and how that Greatest Hero is going away, it's almost as if Dawny is beckoning to take Kal to another dimension.

It's images like the ones that have posted in this thread, that leave me scratching my head as to why DC got rid of her for the time period that they have.
Seventeen frigging years, by my reckoning. As I phrased it in a longer and vigorously defended essay (http://tinyurl.com/37srk7) over on DC's boards:
With all of her limbs. Not as a mutilated, spirit-possessed, ravaged woman. (Stay in esthetic perdition for that, Tom Bierbaum, Mary Bierbaum, Al Gordon, and Keith Giffen.) Not as a morally challenged hallucination. Not as part of a tale dredged from a Crisis deemed long past. Not as a part of a momentary crossover in tangled multiple timelines. Not as the subject of tall tales told around groupies' fires in a public park.
And not, as some of us had felt it necessary to create in order to remember her properly, in <a href="http://mysite.verizon.net/starhavenite/ssn/ssn-illustrated-web.html">fan fiction</a>.
In a substantive, fully-in-earnest, in-the-flesh-and-feathers, in-continuity, printed, official story. Whole, undamaged, and beautiful.
She's HOT!! :p :D That alone can sell comics! Just look at most of the stuff coming out from Avatar and the Vampirella stuff! Sheesh!
Oh, and hot! ;)
Isn't Avatar where Brian Pulido set up shop with his Lady Death? And her sister Vandala, I suppose, though we haven't seen that Valkyrie's own lovely wings since the two Chaos Comics special issues a few years back (and if she's shown up, somebody tell me where!).
Voluptuous women who are shown that way, short of being openly placed on exhibition which I fear has happened too often, from too many angles, with Power Girl have a definite place. It's no more "sexist," to me, than rippling abs with large {ahem!} packaging next to them.
Dawnstar was never quite voluptuous, but could always have shown off notably more of what she had, as Ed Benes did with her in JLA 9.

Oh, and hot! ;)

You didn't notice that Dawny I posted drawn by Jason Pearson?
To be honest, I prefer Dawny to be a bit top-heavy. Breaks the regular cookie-cutter figure most characters have. Also consider this, DC's big boobied characters like Power Girl, Phantom Lady and Starfire, never take a leave of the pages like Dawny did, ergo.............
a method to my madness. :D

I saw it ... but with only a part of my mind, as I tend to blank out anything Legion-ish from TMK-to-Zero-Hour. Isn't that where it came from, in a flashback?
I guess it'd be more accurate to say that she wasn't shown as being normally that overly endowed, either above or below, in the printed books.

Well, Dirk was portrayed as having such an imagination, but Dawny had quite a different look in it. Two of them, in fact.
As for Pearson, he chose to build her up {ahem! :D} more than Giffen did. What resonated with me, anyway, was Giffen's quite attractive "new" look for her. (In the first pix below, from its debut on the cover of LSH v3 n54.)
{digs into sparse set of TMK-to-Zero-Hour issues, bought for reference points}
Ah, yes. It was LSH v4 n28 that had this reverie on Dirk's part. He recalls Dawny from, presumably, the Five-Year-Gap period, lambasting "the Earthers," along with others. (Pearson kept the same "shot" of Dirk sitting at a bar? as he recalled past trials. As Giffen broke it down, retaining one of his own lazy bad habits with the nine-panel grid.)
Later in the issue, a seductress from Earthgov makes herself look like a much nastier (and much more revealing) Dawny ... who, in his mind's eye, takes him to bed after metaphorically discarding her wings ... yoicks, now I remember why I waited for years to actually buy this issue *sigh* ...
The second and third pix below show those two looks as interpreted by fan artist Dean Lee, who, to me, is a far better artist than Pearson {rueful smile}

Voluptuous looks, indeed. Even attractive ones. Yet rare for Dawny. To me, they mainly ended up that way in the book from Giffen and Pearson filtering memories through Dirk's fragile, horny li'l mind. {Seinfeld} Not that there's anything wrong with that {/Seinfeld}

I always liked that costume in the first image you posted. The Pearson is better drawn there, but, if Pearson had drawn her around the time of his first Body Bags - YOWZA!!
You could be right about Dirk's mind, though I think Dreamy looked as she normally did.
Since Dawnstar's costumes has come up, sort of, I've got to say that Jeff Moy's design/redesign is the best after the original. Hell they're all good, but that's my pecking order -
Moy's
Original
Giffen's
Pearson's

[...] Since Dawnstar's costumes have come up, sort of, I've got to say that Jeff Moy's design/redesign is the best after the original.
What most appealed to me for her outfits, in gradual descending order (that is, I liked all of them!)
Original yellow classic look
With fringe in front and back of legs, star on forehead (Lightle, LaRocque, Benes)
With fringe only in front, star on headband (Grell, Sherman, early Giffen, Broderick, Eaglesham)
Reworked "more Indian" braids-and-bare-arms look
Giffen's original preceding Magic Wars
Pearson's revision
Moy's center-and-side-colors post-Zero-Hour look would closely follow, but she never had this in any printed story though she should have, o'course.
I'd put Immonen's look for her, with more varied colors, in fourth place ... even with my trying to forget about it entirely, because it still had an open back panel for ... what wasn't there. Maybe some artist will show her with it and her wings.

One notable corner of the fan-art collection will be for a five-page story, "Stolen Moments," by Darren Taylor (a.k.a. Roadkill), four polished, the last sketched but unfinished. This was his artistic expansion on the crucial moment. You can probably guess a lot of the plot ;)

Your strong reaction interests me, since I see her as being quite suitable, though not as much now (in her late 30s) as a few years ago. In what respect is she "way off"?
Acting skills or demeanor? Lopez has been all over the map in that realm for every "Angel Eyes," there's also, sadly, been an "Enough." With some that have been dredged up for recent superheroics, though Tobey Maguire as Spidey? even after three movies, I still don't take him seriously she at least can summon up a self-possession that would do well by Dawnstar.
Physicality? Not being substantial enough to carry wings on her back? Perhaps so, though any such effect would be added these days by CGI (see "X-Men 3"), so I don't think it matters that much. As for her {ahem} front side, that's quite close to the heroine's original Grellian dimensions.
Facial type? Well, that's much more a matter of individual taste. Either Annabella Lwin (left) or Jordana Brewster (right) would be a closer match, from these shots that other Dawny fans have sent to me, but Lopez would also do very well.

I have to admit and in a blunt way since it sums it up for me - she can't act or sing worth a damn according to my tastes. Maybe there's a film or song that's out there that can change my mind, but I'm not bothering to look. Sorry, I mean no offense to you or anyone with a different view about her on those subjects.
For her as Dawnstar, I find it like picking the first black or African-American actor as Blade or The Black Panther. She's good looking and as such not a "vile", blind choice, but I really think there are hundreds of other actresses out there who could be cast. Porn starlets can be added, but not preferred by myself. Whom would I pick? I really can't think of an actress. There's probably been one that was in a minor roll somewhere that's close to best.
I apologize to you for coming on strong. I respect your opinions and and what you're/you've posting/posted. But I hope with this, I explained myself and my reason(s) why.

Matching actors (or comics or animation artists) to characters is an art, involving subtleties of taste, and hardly a science. I'd take any attempt to cast Dawny over none at all ... live, printed, animated, I'd just love to see her included.
And when I get the DVD, if necessary, I could always turn down the sound ;)

Edit, a few hours later: It'd help if I had the most direct link to ImageShack in my bookmarks file, methinks *knocks on wooden head*

Here's that page form Countdown you asked for. :)

Is this better? I've resized the image, sorry, forgot to do that, I normally do so.
I can resize it again or even just crop Dawney instead, please let me know! :)
The art, I believe is still being done by Jurgens.

Thanks for making the Countdown scan! Dawny looks great ... a bit lower-cut in front than she was in the original Crisis, but matching what was shown for her in the latest crossover. Who did this latest art?
(Could you revise the link to display the ImageShack linked thumbnail instead, so that the page display won't need to scroll sideways? And so that text like this can wrap within the browser window? If you can, thanks.)

Thanks, C-S, for putting in that link. I both saved the whole page and did a crop to save just Dawny for my files. (IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com), the fabulous graphics freebie, comes in handy ;))
Dan Jurgens is back doing that Countdown art, eh? I've liked his clean lines, no matter who inked him. His colleague for those Tales covers, by the way, was Karl Kesel.
Here's the third in that series, with a query about a mystery. (I'll leave the dramatic middle cover for someone else to post ...)
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/3299/covertales323fullil1.jpg
What I always wondered about here is just what brought about that golden statue of Dawnstar, to which the Exile planet's followers of "Kol" are bowing ... as if they're now worshiping her!
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/1885/covertales323statuepi0.jpg
That's not shown anywhere in the three-part story. Was it, I wonder, written as part of Mindy Newell's broader scenario? Envisioning the future, which plays through Brainy's mind? (In a letter column, Newell said that the Legion books would revisit that planet. They never did.)
In 323, the children of the superstitious folk of Exile suffer from deadly illnesses that they know Dawny and Brainy brought to them in their spilled blood. (And which the United Planets resolved to secretly repair from orbit, with satellites bearing "Knorian vaccine.")
Would the populace worship or venerate this mysterious "power" on Dawny's part? Why else would they make such a fierce, wings-splayed, golden statue of her?
And, DC Direct, will you ever sell a scale model ??? Huh ?????

One of Tom Burgos's many sketches of Dawnstar. I like this one more than some others. Her face is taken in earnest, and with a wistful look, rather than the semi-caricatures that he usually draws (but which are also intriguing).

Those four lovely pieces of art in post 130 (http://forum.newsarama.com/showpost.php?p=4016054&postcount=130) are by:
Garrett Blair, who frequently auctions such curvy works on eBay
Al Rio, colored by Loser Lad, formerly at Legion venues, not seen for a while
WayneM a.k.a. Star Boy, also on such venues, who's drawn a full Simpsonized Legion
Bruce Patterson, which original painting I own (notes and smaller version on page 2 (http://forum.newsarama.com/showpost.php?p=3901892&postcount=31))
Adding to my earlier posting (http://forum.newsarama.com/showpost.php?p=3891660&postcount=20) of his work, here is "Dawnstar in Leisure Flight," using Poser, from

Appreciation threads are great because whereas 90% of the 'Rama is a giant bitch fest,
appreciation threads are positive for the most part.
I'll certainly second that. Make that 90 percent of the 'Net. Hell's bells, following the lead of the
great Theodore Sturgeon, 90 percent of everything (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeon's_law).
Anyway, this thread falls ten pages when I'm away for a week? Tsk tsk. We meaning, here,
Justin Long, mastering Dawny's sly glance, et moi really have to do something about that ...

But he'd have no chance of actually CATCHING her. {wicked grin}
I've had enough of this for a while. It's not much of a pleasure any more to share what art I've gathered, from a comics interest of some decades, if some of those here insist on pissing all over it.
So I guess you got what you wanted, at least for now, and as far as I'm concerned.
Next time, try starting a thread for some character that actually sparks your enthusiasm, rather than misleading the rest of us.

My thanks again to CatScratch, DianaFan, and all others here who do genuinely enjoy celebrating our lady from Starhaven. Any place for discussion and sharing never lasts forever, despite the best of intentions, and perhaps it's time to move on anyway.
My own Dawnstar collection WILL find its way, in full, in larger versions, to the Net. That's a solemn promise. I just have to make time to get it posted.
Any genuine Dawny fans are welcome to link up with me as CatScratch has on MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/greybird007), or on ComicSpace (http://www.comicspace.com/greybird), or at the Yahoo! Group linked below.
This evening I posted my first 25 contributions, in this 'Rama thread, of Dawny fan art to a new gallery at ComicSpace (http://www.comicspace.com/greybird/comics.php?action=gallery&comic_id=12726). I thought I'd send along Gary Frank's sketch for Dawnstar, from his Superman-and-related scrapbook since, against my usual bent, I ended up buying Wizard 191.
It doesn't have the flair and mystery of her original look, true enough, but I doubted that the Mike Grell design would be kept for very long beyond highlighting her return in "Lightning Saga."
This design's notably more workable for flight, especially in limiting the fringe, and nicely accentuates her figure. The ornamental clasp on her chest is a potent focus. He's closed some of "the holes," true, but still shows off her chest and legs effectively.
Quite a change, but I liked it on first view, and even more so as I look at it again!

Thanks for the share Greybird! http://www.myspacedev.com/img/smilies/sign/sign0173.gif
I prefer the Grell design or the Moy redesign. Some of the later ones are better, but that ones not to bad. In some ways this is more of the "X-Men" syndrome as I like to call it. Everytime there's a new artist, they redesign the characters or they're costumes, unless the new guy/gal likes something already there.

Hey, kids, guess who's showing up in season two of the Legion animated series !!!!!
From CBR (http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=11377):
As for what other Legionnaires we can expect to see, the panel noted Karate Kid, a return for Matter-Eater Lad, Dream Girl, Computo, Nemesis Kid, Dawnstar and Invisible Kid. "He's in every episode," Tucker quipped. The Legion of Substitute Heroes could be seen in cameos, "and Tyroc rocks."
WOOOOOT! I'm jazzed! And an animator confirmed this separately in an interview with Kevin Leung, which I'll link when it's put on line.
