The first story by writer Steve Gerber and artists Justiniano and Walden Wong will pick up on the fate of the Helmut of Fate, after the series of one-shots several months ago. Then the back-up story by Matt Sturges and Stephen Segovia stars Eclipso.

We caught up with both writers for some brief words about their respective stories…

“The Doctor Fate story picks up where the five <b>Helmet of Fate</b> one-shots ended,” explained Steve Gerber. “The helmet returns to Earth a final time and comes into the possession of its new owner, one Dr. Kent V. Nelson. Although our Kent Nelson shares a name and a bloodline with the Doctor Fate of the 1940s, he's not the same character. He's that character's grand-nephew. He's never met the original Kent Nelson, and he's completely unaware of his progenitor's alter ego. In fact, I'm working on the premise that he may never even have heard of Doctor Fate, because Fate operated mostly in the shadows and on other planes of existence, even during his tenure with the Justice Society. He was never as well-known to the general public as, say, Flash or Green Lantern.

“While the story does make reference to events that took place in <b>Helmet of Fate</b> and the <b>Day of Vengeance</b> series, new readers will be able to jump right in without having read any of those prior stories. This is a new series about a new character, and it'll be comprehensible even to folks who've never read <i>anything</i> about Doctor Fate before.”

Fans of the good Doctor may recall <b>Helmut of Fate</b> was supposed to have led into the launch of the new Doctor Fate</b> ongoing series helmed by Gerber. The writer explained to Newsarama why that series didn’t happen and it was rethought into this new format…

“It happened primarily because of my health,” he said. “I'll spare you the details, unless you really want to know. (I've discussed them on my blog - www.stevegerber.com/sgblog - for anyone who's interested.) The bottom line is that I've been slow in turning out scripts, because my energy levels haven't exactly been at their peak. Limiting the series to eight issues and reducing the page count for <b>Doctor Fate</b> after the third issue was one way of coping with the situation. My hope is that the book will do well enough that, once I'm in better shape, we can either continue the dual-feature title or spin Doctor Fate off into his own ongoing series.”

As to the “shared” format of the title, Gerber for one is a fan…

Said the writer, “Personally, I'm very pleased. I like the dual-feature format, and I've always liked the Eclipso character, both its original incarnation and the new, more twisted version. I think the two series will complement each other well. “

[<i>continued</i>...]

<center><a href=http://www.gamealmighty.com target=new><img src=http://www.newsarama.com/heroes_philly07/sponsor/gamealmighty_1.gif border=0 vspace=5></a>

<blockquote><i>Newsarama's coverage of the 2007 Heroes Con & Wizardworld: Philadelphia</b> is brought to you by <a href=http://www.gamealmighty.com target=new><b>GameAlmighty.com</b></a> - "Truth, Justice, and Videogames by the only website run by superheroes"</i>...</blockquote></center>
And as for Sturges’<b>Eclipso</b> feature…

“This story focuses on Eclipso, who still inhabits the body of Jean Loring,” explained the writer. “I guess Eclipso's enjoyed exploring his feminine side. She's returned to Earth, after being hurled into orbit around the Sun at the end of <b>Day of Vengeance</b>. Only this time, she's working at the behest of a new - I suppose "benefactor" would be the best word - and she's serving his agenda as well as her own. I've got some good heroes to work with, including one or two that we haven't seen around in a while. And another of the main characters is a dead Englishman with a giant hole in his chest, so it should be a lot of fun.”

Like Gerber, Sturges is keen on “sharing” a title with another character and another writer, with emphasis on the latter…

“I think it's a fine idea,” He said, “though I'm obviously getting the long end of the stick here, since Steve's a lot better known than I am. But I think it's a good idea on its own merits, since you get two different stories that are in the same ballpark; if you like one, then hopefully there's a good chance you'll like the other.”

Both writers say their stories can be understood and enjoyed without having to read <b>Countdown</b> proper. And while the Doctor Fate story won’t directly intersect with the main series, the Eclipso feature seems to have a somewhat a more direct tie.

“Eclipso sets some things in motion that will ultimately be resolved in <b>Countdown</b>, as I understand it,” said Sturges, “but it's a fairly self-contained story other than that.”

The first story by writer Steve Gerber and artists Justiniano and Walden Wong will pick up on the fate of the Helmut of Fate, after the series of one-shots several months ago.

All these years and I didn't know that Dr. Fate had a first name, and a German one at that...

Just like the old "Tales of Suspense" and Tales to Astonish," I love it! It would be great if DC went back to on going dual books, say Hawkman and Atom in Adventure Comics, and Manhunter and The Question in House of Mystery.

If the titles are counting down to Adventure and Mystery, why didn't they just start with number 8 and work down to 1?

I was all for countdown to adventure, but I'm not so sure about this one. Then again, I've never been a huge fan of magic in comic books. Just my opinion though.

Oh, cripes, not freaking Eclipso again. If I never read another Eclipso story it'll be too soon.

I was looking forward to Gerber's Fate series, since it was announced.

Since its now a mini-series, it now gives me more reason to check it out - knowing I'll get a self-contained story.

My only reservation is this comment:
“Eclipso sets some things in motion that will ultimately be resolved in <b>Countdown</b>, as I understand it,” said Sturges, “but it's a fairly self-contained story other than that.”

Frankly, I've lost a lot of interest in DC with all the Countdown tie-ins. Countdown itself seems to be a series of vignettes - not quite complete stories. It mainly reads like a series of endings to conflicts set-up in other books.

Sturges says the Eclipso story will fairly self-contained - other than the Countdown connections. Does that mean I will need to pick up issues of Countdown to see it resolved?

I would rather see plot threads be picked up in a second mini-series. I can understand not being able to wrap up everything in one title, and the need to be serial in format, but I would rather have plots weave on their own path, instead of just bleeding into a few middle issues of another on-going story.

I had no idea Steve Gerber was sick. Poor guy. I wish him all the best and hope for a recovery. And it is a shame that Dr. Fate was reduced to a miniseries. But now I might buy it because there is an end in sight.

Helmut of Fate? Baron Zemo made an appearance in those books?

Just like the old "Tales of Suspense" and Tales to Astonish," I love it!I asked Joe Q (although it appears to have not been asked as none were this week) if Marvel had considered putting out books with that set up earlier this week, so its kinda funny to hear this now. My questions seems a bit prophetic now.

I didn't like Days of Vengence or the Helmet of Fate one-shots so it will remain to be seen if I like this. But I do like the format and think it could be given a new life in our modern era.

Frankly, I've lost a lot of interest in DC with all the Countdown tie-ins. Countdown itself seems to be a series of vignettes - not quite complete stories. It mainly reads like a series of endings to conflicts set-up in other books.Really? I recently caught up with Countdown and it doesn't seem that way to me at all. The new plots (to me) seem to be:
* Jimmy's powers
* Darkseid
* Black Mary Marvel
* Jason Todd and the Monitors

Jimmy's powers is completely new (for me) and developing at a good pace. Darkseid is also new but has only just been introduced.

Mary Marvel is a continuance of a story-arc hinted at in Trials of Shazam! but I would hardly call it just the ending to it, as it was barely even mentioned in Trials of Shazam.

Jason Todd versus the Monitor's is technically old, but this is the first we've seen of his resurrection being addressed (outside of how it happened in the Batman Annual) and the monitors doing anything outside of their brief appearance in Brave New World (which was simply a preview book).

The Amazon's Attack tie-in simply served to established when Countdown is happening.

So no, I have to disagree personally.

Huh, funny. :D Guys that fly are okay, aliens are okay, but magic? That's just way too far for comics. :D

I hope this is better than (at least) the first issue of Marvel's Mystic Arcana... that sucked arse...

All these years and I didn't know that Dr. Fate had a first name, and a German one at that...

LOL!

Nice idea to use the dual feature format here. Particularly to allow Gerber to recover his strength, both physical and creative, and still give us some Fate. I had no idea he was so sick. Ulcerative colitis, coronary artery disease and pulmonary fibrosis... Damn... :( Hopefully, we'll get the Fate ongoing after this and he'll be writing it. :)

I love that DC does legacy better than anyone. But having the new Dr. Fate be named Kent Nelson is just wrong imo. It didn't work for me when the Aquaman was also named Arthur Curry either.

And how could someone in the Nelson family NOT know (or apparently even not have a clue) who Dr. Fate is/was. The original Kent Nelson and his wife lived in a freakin' tower with no doors to get in or out.

I've always liked Gerber - but while Fate did work in other dimensional worlds alot - he wasn't exactly invisible in the JSA. From his efforts in WWII thru his time with the JSA & JLA until today - Dr. Fate should be eaily recognizable to the people of DC Earth.

I've loved the character of Dr. Fate ever since the Pasko/Simonson origin from the late 70's. JM DeMatteis series was excellent. The Giffen drawn tales in Flash were great.

What will this new series bring - so far from what's been announced - I'm just not excited.

Unlike Eclipso. That I'm geeked for.

Oh, cripes, not freaking Eclipso again. If I never read another Eclipso story it'll be too soon.

Yeah, 'cuz ya know how she's been poppin' up in every DC title. It's like you can't open a single book nowadays without seeing Jean Loring as Eclipso. She's the Wolverine of the DCU.

Oh wait. That's not the case at all. What are you talking about?

I'll be picking this one up for Justiniano's work alone. His work is some of the most exciting imagery on the pages of the DCU. I hope he stays on this side of the fence for a while.

Oh wait. That's not the case at all. What are you talking about? She was a driving force in Days of Vengeance. I'm not overly thrilled to hear she's in this because of her part in DoV. I can certainly understand someone never wanting to read a story she's in.

It just seems like a missed opportunity that they're using the title "Countdown to Mystery" but don't include Ralph Dibny, Ghost Detective in the comic.

So no, I have to disagree personally.

While some stories may currently seem contained to Countdown, they aren't staying there based on what news has been announced:

*Karate Kid's story takes place in between scenes in Justice League, and since his scenes in Countdown consisted of him fighting Black Lightning and Batman in the Batcave (with no ste up) and being locked in the satelite, he really hasn't even had a signifcant moment in Countdown, let alone grasping his story in that book.
*Mary's tale comes from Day of Vengeance, 52, and Tiral of Shazam! She will meet up with Eclipso at some point, so the story continues in this spin-off title.
*Jason Todd's story deals with elements from The Return of Donna Troy, Teen Titans, Batman, and Ion, to name a few. It will be continued in the All-New Atom, in a story that involves roots in Identity Crisis with the Search fo Ray Palmer
*Jimmy's story continues in Superman books
*The Rogues story is crossing over in the Flash currently
*Darkseid and the New Gods have been popping up all over lately, and it is hard to tell which stories starring them recently will be important. Firestorm ended with the hero on Apokoplips, so the story will likely spring partially from that. And how does this all fit with Morrison's Mr. Miracle?
*Batwoman and Montoya have been revealed to be showing up in Countdown, which will spring out of 52 which sprung from Gotham Central. Their story will likely cross over with the Crime Bible mini series.
*Black Adam got his powers back? I guess we'll have to read his upcoming miniseries, spinning out of 52 and (God awful) World War III
*An upcoming issue will be dedicated to Black Canary and Green Arrow's nuptials, which comes from Birds of Prey and Green Arrow's book, as well as Black Canary's mini. This will lead into the wedding specials and likely a rumored new series.
*Forerunner's appearance will lead into Countdown to Adventure, which teams up with 52's space heroes.

This is all legit off the top of my head. 52 worked because it was a story. Countdown is more like a weekly sample of what is happening in the DC Universe. It will be difficult to get what is happening with other books without reading Countdown, but Coutdown itself doesn't seem to say anything. The story is like Swiss cheese.
People say we need to wait to see what Countdown is about. 52 issues is one thing. reading every DC title so you can keep up with what's happening while nothing seems to be happening at the same time seems too much.

Well I bow to your superior knowledge, except for one claim....
reading every DC title so you can keep up with what's happening while nothing seems to be happening at the same time seems too much.As a new reader I can say that isn't necessary. A lot of those other books I haven't read and yet I'm still getting a good, enjoyable story.
