Looking like it owes a lot more to Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight than to the Tim Burton-era Batman, Warner Brothers has released tow pictures of the new Batmobile from the upcoming Batman Begins

Click on the images for slightly larger versions.

Dear God that things got some big tires on it.

It looks cool, but it's not at all what I was expecting.

That’s exactly what I was thinking! I heard this movie will be some what international and the car makes sense for different terrain. Besides, the cars from the old movies are so long that they probably don’t corner well.

It kinds of looks like an SUV designed by the long-defunct DeLorean Motors.

Too clunky and utilitarian, but maybe that's the point. This is early in his career. Maybe aesthetics weren't Batman's primary motivator at this point.

I'd have rather seen a sleek design like the ones in the other movies, but it'll be interesting to see how they justify this monstrosity.

It's not a Bat Mobile, it's a Bat Tractor.

You can see the attachment at the back for ploughs, trailers and such.

I know this is supposed to be the prototype Batmobile, but where are the fins, man? Ya gotta have the tailfins!

The big jet engine in back is pretty sweet, though...

I don't like it. It shows none of the spirit of Batman and is not recognizable as a Batmobile. It looks intimidating but it doesn't look Batman.

I like the design, but is this really suppose to be a first-generation ride? For someone who is just starting out in his fight against crime, this is one heavy duty, hi-tech vehicle! This should make one hell of a toy for the kids once the merchandising kicks in!

I like the new one don't go down that road, grasshopper - a wave of snipers in the DCU or Marvel U would quickly render both places void of heroes...one mid-level bad guy distract the hero, hero goes after mid-level bad guy, competent sniper waiting for the hero to be distracted takes his shot.

Bang.

That may well be the ugliest vehicle I've ever seen.

I can cut them some slack, as this is a "first generation prototype batmobile," and hopefully there's a logical explaination for it in the film.

Nonetheless, it looks like they did a very special episode of "Junkyard Wars," and told the contestants to build a monster truck.

Well, I still preferred the Burton Batmobile, although the one in the fourth movie was kind of cool too, but one thing is for sure:

Ra's Al Ghul will be pissing in his pants once this thing shows up in his driveway!

Last moments of the new film.

BATMAN: Alfred, now that this crisis has ended AND the new car has been totalled, we need to re-tool.

ALFRED: Yes Sir. I've been toying with some revisions for your car...

I agree. I hope this doesn't bode ill for the film. And yes, I will wait for it to come out before rendering final judgment. (Cause, you know, Warner Brothers REALLY cares what Primate thinks!)

The design of this tank was obviously inspired by The Dark Knight Returns, and as such I wish it would have been "saved" for that film (if it should ever make it into production).

A prototype Batmobile should be some kind of modified concept car of some kind (like the new Ford GT40), in keeping with the spirit of the original comic book car, which was basically a normal car with a fin welded to the roof and a bat-head shield mounted on the front. I mean, wouldn't something like that make more sense for a rich young entrepreneur on the go?

I agree w/most of the posters here, it looks very un-Batman-like, this new Batmobile. I also hope they have a damn good explanation for its design in the movie!!!

Did you have this jpeg ready to post, Matt? :P

Just b/c the vehicle is tank-like, doesn't make it a Batmobile (in my book).

The Batmobile has *always* been a car IIRC, except in DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. Frank Miller goofed on that, should've just called it the Bat-Tank!!!

So we've seen the new Bat logo/emblem and the new "Batmobile", when do we see THE COSTUME!?!?

Thumbs down. I'm sure there's a logical reason in the film for why Batman would drive something like that, and it's not something that's going to keep me away from the movie, but it's just not something I personally dig.

My favorite Batmobiles of all time are the 60's Adam West version and the WB animated version.

Well. maybe it's just Batman's first-generation vehicle. But remember that he has all of Bruce Wayne's millions (billions?) to spend. So, pretty much ANYTHING he wanted, he could have built.

It does match batmobile "spy" descriptions posted on other movie sites - plus there's not enough exposed engine work, etc.. to say this is just the chassis and not the full vehicle.

I think it's kinda cool - we wanted something different from the Schumacher era, and we're getting it - the cheese just moved, folks.

How about the Batmobile in "The Mechanic" episode that breaks down, then he hires the Mechanic, and then he gets the Batmobile that's in TAS?

Did I mention I'm a total Batmobile geek? :o :)

I really like all of them - except Breyfogle's 90's Batmobile. I even like the "Batman Forever" one (dug the way it suggested the 40s-50s design) and the "Batman and Robin" one - thought the single seat, open cockpit design was interesting, character wise - it kinda suggested the way Batman was isolating himself from Robin in the movie. Like I said - geek.

Love the 60's TV one and now really appreciate the Anton Furst one from 89 - took me awhile to like that one, but it's really stood the test of time and is a classic design now. The recent 1/18 Hot Wheels version of it is awesome.

I think this Batman Begins one will also hang in there over time.

Hmm, would a superhero who stalks about in the shadows of the night drive around in this huge, barrelling monster of a 'mobile? Seems like an odd choice of model.

Well the Creature of the Night probably wouldn't be driving around either if we're going to split hairs

Yes.

What's more, I think with a critical and close reading of the text you can easily see that Miller's intent was to create an "un-Batmanlike" Batmobile.

Streamlining, anyone?

It looks like one of those remote control cars that can flip over and do tricks and stuff. If Ra's gets a hold of the remote, we're all doomed!

I just really hope there's a good reason for this BEAST in the film. And what exactly is the purpose for those wheels in the front? So no one can steal his hubcaps? Give me sleekness and fins!

I'm half expecting the thing to transform into a robot and fight the villians for him!

Interesting... The title, the lead actor, everything we heard so far screamed "Year One". And now we have this Dark-Knight-Returns-page turned real. Sure, I can imagine... I don't know, Jack Palance or somebody like that in a DKR-costume coming out of this tank, but Christian Bale (AKA the man without a chin)?

I hoping that this isn't the final batmobile. Maybe this is just an early prototype.

I'm sorry but nothing will ever top the batmobile from the first two movies. It was awesome. This one just doesn't do it for me. I do like the look of it in the mid section. But the front wheels and big honking back wheels just aren't doing anything for me.

But it does look like they were having some fun with it before they took these shots.
