So far, I liked issue one a lot, loved issue two, liked issue three. But this one is just the best of them all. Reagan and his crew are being hunted by a strange, violent entity who apparently wants to give them the most terrible and painful death possible. Meanwhile, Travis Parham does what he can to get HIS veangeance, but it's kind of difficult to compete with an entity mounted in a big muthaf*cking black horse and with the power to switch north and south.
Yeah, he does that. Even keeping a MOUNTAIN as reference point, Reagan and his crew ride in a circle, unable to leave the grasslands. And that's just a small demonstration of the power of the Ghost Rider.
This issue is action-packed and has excellent twists. The scenes where the Ghost Rider appears and strikes Reagan's crew are just amazing. And Ennis' dialogue is masterful as usual, capturing the language patterns and accents with sheer perfection. And all this just seems to be the appetizer, judging by the chilling final page (that close-up on the eyes was just scary). And some questions are left unanswered, which makes me even more eager to read the next issue.
Clayton Crain's artwork, which was quite lacklustre on the previous issue, is just fantastic in this one. Excellent visual narrative and coloring. The page where Ghost Rider appears behind Reagan's crew is just amazing. And this time, Crain balances the lighting very well, and everything's quite clear to our eyes. The only bit of his artwork I didn't like was the first page, which could have been much better. But after that... just a sight for sore eyes.
Garth Ennis loves westerns, and that's something you can see in this great series: the slow-pacing, the language, and the set-up for a possible showdown in the final issue. My God, Garth Ennis and Clayton Crain doing a WESTERN SHOWDOWN... I just can't wait.
Excellent issue. If you liked Road to Damnation, you'll probably enjoy Trail of Tears. If you didn't like Road to Damnation, you'll probably enjoy Trail of Tears nonetheless.
