BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL #5
Written by Andy Diggle
Art and Cover by Whilce Portacio and Richard Friend
Edited by Mike Carlin
PLOT:
It's all-out war as Batman goes up against an army of Lex Luthor's G.I. Robots!
REVIEW:
In the previous issue, the idea of the whole series of Batman Confidential from the "Rules of Engagement" gave me a feeling of dread ness all of a sudden. While I handled the issues when it started, it changed suddenly. Finally reading that issue a second time, it was just me and the issue has nice moments. So that done, here's issue 5.
First of all, the "of 8" that was under the issue number for the past issues is GONE. So the book is not facing cancellation. As for the issue, this issue went by quick. Its not like issues like this aren't quick at all, but this went by really quick. It’s all due to the action sequence in the beginning with Batman and his batplane. It was a very cool action sequence and it had me dancing and mincing the scenes as I read them. I was really cool.
One of the things people might look at are the G.I. Robots talking like humans do. The thing is they have A.I.'s, and it goes back to the beginning of the story of the guy who got killed within the robot. And that makes sense, until you read the lines and somehow, even it is has an A.I. it wouldn't talk kinda like that. With emotions when it’s ready to kill. So it was something that didn't feel right to me. The other thing people might question is Luthor following this storyline. Until further notice, Birthright is still the main Superman origin storyline and Luthor does go to jail after that. But from what’s going on here, you would wonder how the rest of Luthor's life such as him as president would still happen. Him getting caught is something you would believe might happen in the dn, although we don't know, and the DCAU Luthor got into the same troubles and still people (DCAU people) bought him being a good guy running for president. Maybe that’s the plan in DC's head. Something to point out.
Overall, with this arc ending, there was good action. But people might say the issue felt short because of the action. I would feel the same way, and hope the last part has enough to end this. The art, I'll admit, has seen better days. People will still talk about it. With one more to go on this arc, lest see how it concludes.
RATING: 7.5/10
Next Issue: The 6 issue arc of Rules of Engagement concludes.
