After re-reading the older issues and the newer ones, I've just now realized how much of a c word and just plain bad cop Deena is. She's one of those cops that thinks she should be allowed to do anything and get away with it up to and including murder just because she's a cop.

How can you say she's a bad cop? She's the muscle of the deena/walker pair, so she has to bend the rules now and then. She's put her own safety on the side in order to save the lives of strangers and people she doesn't even like. Plus she's one hell of a detective and can crack a case like no ones buisness. And she wears bellie shirts.
And ***SPOILERS for VOL. 2**** murder? I'd say it was self defense. She did, if I recall, have a knife stuck in her back.

Great cop and detective skills. Good looking, full of brains and personality. Knows what she wants and goes for it. In reality the kind of person I want as a law enforcement officer. As far as the murder - self defense and nearly every issue of powers contains an introduction stating so. However...
- it's pretty clear she is responsible for a murder of an underworld power.
- she's also committed some acts lately that are more the result of an powers drivne illness that probably would not have happened otherwise.
Walker is easier to like somehow, even though he's a distrustful liar on occassion.
Either way the shaed of grey in the characterization of these characters makes them so fully realized and dimensional.

Kills someone in self defense and covers it up instead of turning herself in = bad cop.
She thinks it's ok to rip a guys arm off accidentally due to illegal use of powers but covers her own illegal use of powers up = bad cop.
Yes, I applaud the shades of grey in her character as good writing. I am saying that the character of Deena is a bad cop. I don't mean incompetent bad but corrupt and unethical bad. I guess the term I am going form is "dirty cop".

I think her covering it up can be linked to the mental affects her new powers are having on her.

Bad cop? No way......she has been shown to be a great cop under all kinds of stress.
Bit of a dirty cop? Okay...I'll give you that. Although she killed that boyfriend of hers inself defense, she did cover it up rather than admit to anyone that she had powers. That is a pretty self serving abuse of power, and would pretty much guarantee that she lose her badge and probably face jail time.
Either way....she is a great character. One of the best ones around in comics today.

Keep in mind that she lives in a world where vigilantism is the rule rather than the exception.

True....but that doesn't excuse covering up the fact that she killed a man in self defense just so she wouldn't have to explain that she had powers.

Plus isn't she who might have killed Johnny Royale? I think Bendis's intention was to make her a corrupt cop from the beginning.

True....she definitely played a part in his death. Although I wouldn't think of her as corrupt....because she isn't out for personal gain, per se. She has just done some questionable things in the name of her job and self preservation.

I defined her as corrupt not because she is after financial gain, but because she is willing to break the law when she is supposed to be upholding it.

I gotcha. It's just when I hear corrupt cop, I think of a cop on the take or selling drugs that he confiscates and stuff like that. Pretty silly distinction on my part. She has definitely shown a willingness to break the law, so I guess the corrupt label fits.
Either way, I am really enjoying how this is all shaping up. Next issue she and Walker are supposed to square off.....that should be cool.

Yeah, but if there's powers involved she's going to get her ass kicked.

Probably....Walker seems much more powerful than whatever Deena's got going for her.
But he isn't supposed to use his powers except for specific reasons. And he would also be very reluctant to use them on Deena. Since she is in an emotionally turbulent state of mind, she might not be so reluctant.
Should be a cool issue. I hope it ships on time....the schedule has been pretty slow lately.

He might be reluctant to use them, but he probably will if he needs to defend himself. The Guardians (or whatever their name is, can never remember so I call them Guardians as in GL) accepted his decision to break the rules .

Yeah....but they also said they would forgive it just the once. Or at least that they won't be so forgiving the next time. That is what will make this confrontation so interesting....what exactly will Walker do? What exactly will he be able to do?

If they try and prevent him from defending himself well that explains why they lose so many agents. :D As to what happens, no idea. Bendis always has something up his sleeve. Though I wanted to ask, the Guardians appeared as Deena, in the last issue. Does that mean that she is technically dead?

Nah....they just shifted their appearance to someone he cares about who is still alive. I think they did that the first time they appeared, too.
Interesting though that they take the shape of Deena rather than his girlfriend. Kind of says that subconsciously, he cares about her in the same way that he cared about Zora and Retro Girl.

She's clearly out of control - look how she goes to the IAD's detective's home in issue 16, with the implication that she's there to kill her - only stopping because she sees a child.

It's not self-defence at the point she kills him. He's disarmed and just standing there - she walks over. he's standing there frozen with fear and is not moving, not struggling.
She murders him - it's not self-defence.

he stuck a knife in her back. I'd say anything after that is self-defense.

The law wouldn't - not once he's disarmed, not resisting and backed against a wall. If he still had the knife and was still going for her, you'd have a point.
The wider point here is that, of course, nobody would see this (we don't count) and it looks worse because she then tries to cover it up. Even if she tried a self-defense plea, she'd have to explain a) her powers and b) why she got rid of the body and lied to IAD.

Keep in mind, that she had powers forced on her.She was basically raped. Not only did it alter her physiology, but her mental state as well. As u read her more and more, her character gets a bit more darker,(hence the stalking of the detective at her house) and more angry (if thats even possible with her.)
So when her ex bf attacks her, all of a sudden, she was the victim, which , in turn, pissed her off more. Deena seems to be the type of character that hates being the victim. What she did was self defense? Maybe. But look at it this way: She was romantically involved with a guy that stabbed her, not some perp on her beat. She panicked. If she didnt have thoses powers, things would have ended up differently. (like her being dead)

Anyone catch the solicits for #28, August? Well, it seems Deena's character arc is following a very natural progression. Beware though the solicit is spoiler.
