I love both Superman and Batman. I love stories written about them, but damn it if I cannot bring myself to purchase Superman Batman. Is it the art or the plot or both? Maybe part of it is that they are pretty much Superman stories with Batman in them....but I love Superman...so what is the problem?

Anyone else feel this way?

Because it's had ____ writers, having characters you like is not enough.

Crappy story. It's late all the time. It's not taken seriously. Any of these.

Loeb made it into the comic book version of a summer popcorn movie. After that it has been forgettable.

That's the problem for me particularly with the current arc. I'm dropping it for a while till Dustin Nguyen starts his arc as artist. I wanted to see him on Batman for longer than that one arc a while back.

Plus, the S/B book itself has definitely lost something since Loeb left. His stuff especially the first arc with McGuinness was fun.

It's a redundant book.

They are both in JLA, do we really need another book with the two of them? It that their "extra special" clubhouse (no girls allowed)?

I just read a Superman/Batman story (Tell Me If You've Heard This One Before...) that was in the Superman/Batman Greatest Stories Ever Told tpb and it was awful. The art was lovely but the dialogue was excruciatingly bad. They should never let Joe Kelly near Superman or Batman again.

I was thinking about getting the Superman/Batman trades. Is it all as bad as this?

Simply put, it's one of the worst books on the stands. I loved Loeb's Superman Batman when the Superman core titles and Batman core titles sucked. Now the Superman and Batman core titles are better than they've been in a long time, and Superman Batman sucks, it's marginalized.

Joe Kelly's Superman/Batman Annual was excellent, IMO. To me he is the only writer, besides the departed Mr. Loeb, who gets the dynamic between the Big 2, and why they need their own book.
There is enough material between Bats and Supes, and their respective "families" to fuel plenty of stories, IF they can manage to shift the focus away from supposed events and focus on the characters...and not let the title characters get pushed out of their own book for the sake of pimping lesser characters.

Characters don't make a story, dude. Writing and art do.

and pat lee sure aint gonna save it.

the reason why it worked in the beginning was because it had a direction, now it just exists. either give it some meaning or get rid of the book

This book should have ended @ #26, the Sam Loeb tribute issue. The latest story arc is horrible, and it led to me dropping the title. Part of the appeal of Loeb's run on the title were the artists he was paired with. Nothing against Matthew Clark, but his art doesn't compare w/ McGuinness, Turner, or Pacheco. The current arc is a perfect example of how a good 2-3 issue story can magically become a boring, drawn out six issue arc. The first four arcs were great, even though "With a Vengeance" was too confusing for it's own good. Like another poster said, this was essentially the comic equivalent of a Michael Bay film.

You must be from one of the alternate dimensions that those two fools keep basing their plots around. Yawn.

It was ok under Loeb for two arcs, then it just got moronic. Now it's just bland, cookie-cutter superheroics.

It feels like it has the quality of bad "5th week" issues like those Elseworlds they did years ago. Bad writting, bad art, and since its not in continuity nobody bothers to improve.

Because it makes a Superman/Batman team-up less special when there's an ongoing dedicated to it.

Agreed. It lost something after this. As an ongoing - no. As an occasional mini series- yes.

I liked it in the beginning (was that when Loeb was still on it?) but soon lost interest...

Although I think the cover with the Metal Men looks sweet...

That's it for me, I don't have money for sideshows. Loeb was good, but i have no interest in it these days

Because they're the night and the day... they're just too different (Miller knew this). They shouldn't work together (not too much, at least). The problem, of course, is that they're DC's most popular characters... and they just do the math and think is a great way to sell comics to the kids... even though they just don't work together.

My opinion, at least.

Yea, I feel the same way. The problem with Superman/Batman is that it's just not very good. In fact, it hasn't been very good since Loeb's final arc.

So is the book in continuity or not?

i think it straddles the line...pretty much pick and choose, but generally not. i'm sure the first couple arcs were, with Luthor and Supergirl.

but i'm dropping it after the Metal Men thing...i'm about "6-part epic"ed out. the current story is taxing me as it is.

So is the book in continuity or not?

You got me! Early in the arc, it shows the updated Manhunter... but then it shows Luthor (a wanted criminal as of the end of Up, Up, and Away) in the open, and Batman finds him with little trouble. But in Superman 659, he is reflecting on what has happened to him recently, and he mentions all the Superman stories except the Donner Superkid stuff, and even refers to adventures with the league, and some stuff working directly with Batman (reference to Enemies Among Us).

I'm sticking through the 6th part, and then I'm dropping this title faster that you can say Ambesol
