Since leaving Tokyopop to become a senior editor at Marvel Comics at the end of 2004, Mark Paniccia has edited many of Marvel’s most acclaimed and offbeat books, including Agents of Atlas, Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane, Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius, the Marvel Adventures line and Planet Hulk. He’s also overseen a wide variety of fifth-week events such as Marvel Romance, Marvel Western and Untold Tales of the New Universe.

Paniccia, who’s known as “Panic” to his colleagues, recently spoke to Newsarama about two of his upcoming projects, the magic-themed Mystic Arcana and the massive World War Hulk crossover.

Newsarama: Let’s just start with the laundry list - tell us about some of your new and upcoming projects.

Mark Paniccia: We got the big crossover of 2007 coming up with World War Hulk. There’s a very special four-issue monthly magic event called Mystic Arcana starting in June. A second helping of the original five X-Men in X-Men First Class: Tomorrow’s Brightest, starting in June. A very fun five-issue heist story in Super-Villain Team-Up: MODOK’s 11 on stands in July and exciting plans for Exiles post-issue 100.

Mark isn't as vocal on the net as some guys like Andy Schmidt or Brevoort, but from the output that he puts out in his books alone, the guy has to be one of my favorite creative forces at Marvel.

Of course i'm looking forward to Arcana quite a bit.

Marvel Adventures: Avengers is my top book of 2006, I do not say that lightly. I've been enjoying some many other books, well mostly all Marvel since Batman is crap for me right now. Through all those books I never had as much fun reading the Marvel Adventures: Avengers line a close second would have to be Planet Hulk it's too hardcore for it's own good.lol Good Times:)

Great interview!
I'm looking forward to David's POV on things esoteric and magical. Moore will be a tough act to follow, (Promethea). There was a reason for there being 32 issues. I hope your exploration of the four worlds of Tetragrammaton is Faithful, and your choice of characters suitable to their appointed responsibilities.
After last week's issue of The Incredible Hulk it looks like Holku will be hitching a ride back to Earth with the Spikes, and the Flash animation video on http://www.marvel.com home page shows he's not a happy-go-lucky-kinder-gentler Holku, either.
Junior must have had a blast with this project!
Looks like the Panic and Crosby show is the one to watch this summer (except on May 4).

John Romita Jr can't draw for life!

okay noob, post some of your art so we can see how well you draw professionally and then we can compare it to JRJR's work. The man is a machine, his renditions of Marvel' s characters are ICONIC, and he never misses a deadline. I'm still waiting on him to come back to Amazing Spiderman(though I am enjoying Garney's work)

grow up

Its a great idea initiating new types of stories with Mystic Arcana.

Is the whole Marvel Next "Spellbinders" going to be included in this...?

Considering Marvel Next was supposed to 'turn the Marvel universe on it's ear....'

Mark is probably my favorite editor after Andy Schmidt. I like all the little funny projects he's on. I'm really excited for Super-Villain Team-Up: MODOK’s 11. And WWH should be great. But Iron Man and Black Bolt should be able to kill the Hulk.

I always got the impression that Black Bolt's power was off the chart. I figured if he just shouted once at the Hulk, he'd pulverise him. And anything around the Hulk, as well. 'Course my knowledge of Black Bolt is kind of limited, so I'm probably wrong. :)

Very interesting interview. But I'm curious as to why JRjr is doing the variant covers? The interior artist should be doing the regular covers in my opinion.

Who's the penciler?

Is it the guy doing the pencils for that book, Roger Cruz I think.

Mark is a great editor. But, I disagree that Agents of Atlas was crafted from a throwaway issue of What if...? As a matter of fact, that issue was one of the more memorable What if...? and is one of the few that Marvel fans can recite off the top of their heads (along with What if Captain America ran for President? and What if Cyclops and Phoenix didn't get married?)

It was really only a matter of time before that concept was expanded upon. But I'm glad it was Jeff Parker because that book was all kinds of sweet.
