View Full Version : CAPTAIN AMERICA'S SHIELD MISSING?

Details are sketchy at this time, but a S.H.I.E.L.D. spokesperson has revealed that Captain America's shield has gone missing.
It's unclear who has taken the shield as no photographic evidence exists, but S.H.I.E.L.D. has issued an artistic rendering of the accused along with this statement. "S.H.I.E.L.D. is following several leads and we are working with the cooperation of New York City authorities to resolve this matter." Un-named sources have spotted several S.H.I.E.L.D agents in and around television studios owned by Comedy Central.
One of the biggest questions is "Why?" Few have shown the strength, let alone have had the training, to properly wield the shield, so its use as a weapon seems negligible. If it was stolen to act as a trophy, then it must be taken back and placed in a museum proper. Whatever the reason, whosoever has the shield now will have much to answer for, particularly in these tumultuous times.
With just one of the two shooters believed to be behind the killing of Captain America in custody, this new wrinkle in the Cap case has the country even further on edge and authorities scrambling to find the famous shield.
The shield, granted to Captain America by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 is composed of several virtually indestructible--yet classified--metallic alloys. Though not his first shield, Cap famously used this circular weapon as both a rallying force for U.S. troops, as well as to battle Nazis prior to his disappearance at the end of World War II. Upon his reemergence decades later, the shield followed with him.
More than 60 years after its creation, the shield remains a symbol of American strength and will. With the country still reeling from Captain America's death, the location and security of the shield has become a priority for authorities from S.H.I.E.L.D. to local police.
Newsarama Note: What does the above mean? Watch tonight's The Colbert Report on Comedy Central at 11:30 EST for a very special presentation. As it turns out, Cap had a will...and...well...just watch the show, and you'll see an artifact from the Marvel Universe take a very prestigious place on a shrine to democracy. If you miss it, we'll have a recap of the silliness tomorrow morning.

Breevort gave Colbert the shield that Gruenwald had hanging in his office (which is the one that Breevort took over). So not only did Marvel kill an icon in such a horrible way (shot in the back wearing handcuffs - Superman at least got to go out fighting to protect his city), but now their whoring out his death to the media as much as possible in the aftermath.
I'm sure Mark Gruenwald is quite proud of the current marvel regime.

As a dude that took Cap's recent fate personally, I can honestly say this move towards Colbert is restoring my faith.
Points were made by this.
I also dug seeing Colbert recently in the pages of Spider-Man.
Colbert's show would be especially awesome if SHIELD troops are seen. SHIELD could totally become Marvel's version of Stormtroopers. (maybe someday comic cons will have SHIELD troops the way Star Wars has the 501st :))
I'm starting to see the 'Capekillers' as similar to Ostrander's recent Imperial Jedi (loyal, above all else, to the Emperor).
Smart move Quesada. Truly worthy of a Tip of my Hat. If I ever become a True Believer again (a big 'if'), I'll remember this day as the first that I began to see the light.

I was speaking more to the conflicting messages in the various CW tie-ins (Frontline especially), and to statements from Breevort and Quesada. Millar wants the story to be taken largely at face value (as a super-hero slugfest), and the last "Joe Friday's" was the first time that I heard Quesada refer to 'allegory' and CW in the same sentence.
That, and that well crafted satire, can fly right over the heads of some...

Yeah, 'cause...God forbid that Marvel - a company who is in business to try and make a profit - do something that actually, oh, I don't know... helps them make money, so they can continue producing the comics that whiny fans are going to buy, then complain and whine about at every turn.
Personally, I think it's great that Marvel is able to take advantage of an event that mainstream media is trying to get stories on. All that it's going to do is help increase the sales of comics in general (and, in turn, produce more whiny fanboys :) ).
And, let's face it - Despite what they may say, Marvel isn't in business to please you, me, or anybody else reading their comics. They're in business to make money, doing something that they enjoy. If they want to make the general public more aware of a particular issue or series by showing up on Colbert or other television shows every now and then to keep making money, then so be it.
DC, meanwhile, can produce pretty much whatever they want without fear - They're owned by Time-Warner, one of the wealthiest companies of all time. DC will never go out of business, because Superman and Batman make Time-Warner a crapload of money, every single day. Marvel doesn't have that luxury - they're owned by themselves, and they're just barely 10 years out of filing for bankruptcy. Seriously, Marvel still has a long way to go, before they're as secure as DC is.
I'm sure that at least one person who wanders into a comic store looking for Captain America #25 is going to see the 300 TPB, and buy it, because they just saw the movie, and may not have known that 300 started as a comic. Hell, assuming they find Cap #25, they may even pick up the rest of Brubaker's run on Captain America in TPB, too, to see how the story led up to Cap's death.
Also, if Cap went out fighting some never-before-seen alien (plot device) who started destroying things for no discernable reason, everybody would've just called the issue a blatant ripoff of the Death of Superman, without the hype. :D

First time I heard Quesada refer to "allegory" and Civil War in the same sentence was February of 2006. "The underlying theme serves as an allegory for the current American political landscape – should people sacrifice their civil liberties to create a safer world?". Around the same time as Mark Millar said "The political allegory is for those that are politically aware. Kids are going to read it and just see a big superhero fight.". If that helps...

Cap's current shield was made a few years back by Tony Stark after his original disc shield was destroyed by a Vibranium cancer after spending some months at the bottom of the Atlantic.
actually, i don't think that's how it played out. The shield Stark built just didn't "feel right" (it kept bouncing away from him) so Cap went back to the triangle shield after he was forced to take it from a museum exhibit of the defenders so that he could take down some Hydra goons. The original was recovered, and, yes, it disintegrated. However, the Vibranium cancer was stopped and, miraculously, the shield re-integrated itself.
at least, that's how i remember it. i could be wrong. this was the first Waid/Garney arc post-Heroes Reborn, right?

Jesus Christ, yeah you did. I genuinely meant that I thought it was cool that we were all having fun with this. Does everyone just assume that everything said here is sarcasm? Laughing at the goofy times is fun. It's not all seriousness. Sometimes, when someone says that they think something is funny or cool, they actually do mean that it was funny or cool.
I read you right ziza9. I sensed no sarcasm in your words, and those that did, don't understand dark humor and how it lifts us up from tragedy. ( being a firefighter, I know this and use it along with my fellow brothers to handle some of the crap we have to see!) Or these people are putting the negative there themselves. I say keep up the funny, it's making me laugh, and after Wednesday, we all need to laugh a little.

actually, i don't think that's how it played out.
What happened was the shield was found but it was brittle because of the Vibranium cancer. Cap put the shield back together with tape and glue.
Later, when he was fighting Klaw, Klaw attacked Cap in his energy form. When Klaw passed through the brittle shield, his energy somehow restored the shield's molecular bonding, and it was whole again.

as stated before, it really does feel to the weekly reader that Captain America death is being taken lightly and being exploited by all types of media that can care less. all i can ask from marvel is to please bring this guy back in a few yrs or sooner, cause got damn, it sucks to see that a character that you have some sentimental man love for... now is deceased, we deal with this already in real life, we dont need it in our 30min of entertainment that we purchase.

I really can't believe people have filled 4 pages over an argument about a joke. A joke about the death of a fictional character no less. Like others have said here, let's just be happy our precious industry is getting some more much needed attention.

What makes you say that?
Colbert is a parody. A satire of the ultra conservative far right. That's fine, they deserve ridicule and Colbert is a master at it...not too mention funny as hell sometimes...
Maybe I take Cap way too seriously, but I feel he, above all other comic characters, should never be presented as either representing an extremist viewpoint or as a parody or satire...

Cap's current shield was made a few years back by Tony Stark after his original disc shield was destroyed by a Vibranium cancer after spending some months at the bottom of the Atlantic.
We've been down this road before. (http://forum.newsarama.com/showpost.php?p=954601&postcount=12) Long story short: Cap's shield (now in possession of Stephen Colbert) IS the original circular shield he received during World War II.
And while I geeked out that Colbert actually said "Wakandan Vibranium" on national television, I was slightly disappointed in him because he claimed the Wakandan Vibranium was indestructible. The shield may be indestructible (made of a Wakandan Vibranium/steel alloy), but Wakandan Vibranium is not. A geek like Colbert should have known that. :p

Yep. I didn't say he died when he got shot in the back 'though. I'm just saying that he got shot in the back while doing something heroic.
