Press Release

Canada's first national award recognizing outstanding achievements by Canadian creators in the creation and publication of comic books and graphic novels returns in 2007 for it’s third year: the JOE SHUSTER CANADIAN COMIC BOOK CREATOR AWARDS, named after pioneering Toronto-born artist Joe Shuster who, along with writer Jerry Siegel, created the iconic super-powered hero, Superman.

From coast to coast, Canada is home to many of the comic book industry's top talents. The JOE SHUSTER AWARDS are a way of recognizing and celebrating the achievements of Canadian creators - past, present and future.

About Joe Shuster (1914 – 1992)
The Joe Shuster Awards are named in honor of the great artist, JOE SHUSTER (1914-1992), whose clear, dynamic style and inventive visual flourishes set the standard for graphic storytelling during the infancy of the North American comic book industry. It was Superman, a co-creation of Shuster and Siegel, that electrified the industry in 1938 and, almost overnight, transformed comic books into an enormous pop-cultural phenomenon.

About The Joe Shuster Awards
Founded in late 2004, the Joe Shuster Awards seek to honor Canadians who create comic books, graphic novels and web comics. All nominees in each category are for work published in the previous calendar year. The 2007 awards will be for work published in 2006. For the purposes of the JOE SHUSTER AWARDS, a Canadian is defined as a native or long-term inhabitant of Canada, or an individual who was born in Canada and now resides elsewhere (possessing either Canadian or dual citizenship).

Nominating Committees are selected by the Awards Administrative committee and are newly reconstituted for each year of the awards and consist of a cross-section of comic book journalists and experts from across Canada. They can nominate any creator who had work published in a comic book, graphic novel or comics-related publication that was shipped to retailers between January 1 and December 31 of the previous year.

Nominees are selected by a two round voting process over a 7 week period. Once the list of nominees is finalized for the ballot, the ballot is made be available for public vote for two months on www.joeshusterawards.com and the creator in each respective category that receives the highest vote count from the general public will receive the Joe Shuster Award.

Canadian Fans are eligible to vote for all categories, and for the first time in 2007, non-Canadians can vote for the new categories: FAVOURITE CANADIAN COMIC BOOK CREATOR – ENGLISH LANGUAGE & FAVOURITE CANADIAN COMIC BOOK CREATOR - FRENCH LANGUAGE.

Winners will be announced at a public ceremony on June 9th in Toronto on the weekend of the 5th Annual Paradise Toronto Comicon.

How can the two most recognized Canadian artists in the comic book industry (David Finch & Steve McNiven) not even be nominated for Outstanding Canadian Comic Book Artist? Finch relaunched Moon Knight to a Top 10 book by his artistic value alone, and McNiven on Civil War had the industry-wide best selling (and Marvel's most high profile) book of the year. Seriously who can take the nominations for artist seriously with these 2 excluded? It's an insult to those artists and speaking as a Canadian retailer I have to bring into question the credibility of these awards without them even being nominated....

The awards aren't judged on sales but on artistic merit. To be honest as much as I like Finch and McNiven I find it hard to argue with any of the selected nominees. I hope Stuart Immonen wins in his category.

Mr. Zedic you are confused.

The Joe Shuster Awards are not an award for popularity and sales. The nominations are an award of merit, and the Nominating Committee chose the creators that they felt did the most outstanding creative work of the year.

While I certainly felt that CASINO ROYALE was my favourite movie of 2007, I don't think that it garnered a single Academy Award nomination.

You have chosen to focus in on the Outstanding Canadian Comic Book Artist category.

Perhaps next year you would like to do what the seven member nominating committee (their names are listed above) did and review hundreds of releases from last year and decide, ultimately, who you feel did the most Outstanding Artistic work of 2007.

Here's what they had to choose from:

Nominees are selected by a two round voting process over a 7 week period.

Round 1 - The Nominating Committee reviewed published material for 6 weeks in early 2007. At the end of the review period they were asked to provide a list of five nominees per category that they felt did Outstanding Creative work in the previous calendar year. If a creator received a majority of nominations they were finalized for the ballot at the end of Round 1. The remaining nominated but not finalized creators were placed on a list and given back to the Committee for Round 2.

Round 1 Nominees:
Adrian Alphona
Chris Bachalo
Darwyn Cooke
Wes Craig
Dale Eaglesham
David Finch
Pia Guerra
Niko Henrichon
Stuart Immonen
Karl Kerschl
Leonard Kirk
Jacques Lamontagne
Steve McNiven
Takeshi Miyazawa
Cary Nord
Steve Rolston
Steve Skroce
Cameron Stewart
Doug Wheatley

Round 2 – The Nominating Committee was asked to rank the remaining nominated but not finalized creators, taking into consideration the opinions of their fellow judges and re-reviewing the published material where necessary. Placement on the ranked listing was weighted using a reverse point system, with a #1 ranking receiving the most points. Creators with the most points filled in the remaining vacant positions on the ballot.

The CCBCAA allowed for 8 positions on the ballot in the Artist category.

The Top 8 Round 2:
Adrian Alphona
Darwyn Cooke & J. Bone
Pia Guerra
Niko Henrichon
Stuart Immonen
Cary Nord
Steve Skroce
Doug Wheatley

So yes, Steve McNiven and David Finch were nominated for the award. As were many other amazingly talented artists who did great work in 2007. They just did not receive as many points in the Round Two selection as other creators and did not make the ballot.

They are, however, still eligible for the FAVOURITE CANADIAN COMIC BOOK CREATOR write-in vote, which is a straight-up popularity contest.

No I'm not "confused", keep those insults to those who truly deserve it. All I wanted to know was how they weren't nominated when they both had arguably the best work of their careers on these books from the past year. The fact that Marvel delayed Civil War to ensure McNiven stayed on the book throughout it's run attests to their belief (and mine) that it wouldn't have been the same without him. To me Moon Knight and Civil War would not have had the same impact without Finch or McNiven due to the "artistic merit" they provided on those books. Both of them contained stunning work, and should have been recognized as such, but that's just my opinion....Oh and by the way, if Dale Eaglesham does not make the list next year for his brilliant work on Justice Society of America, I'll be wondering about the nomination process for next year's list as well....

Mr. Zedic, no insult intended, because it still appears to me by the statements you made in your original posting that you were confusing sales and popularity with justification for an automatic inclusion on a ballot of merit.

It is not our position to meddle with the choices of the Nominating Committee and we stand by their choices. After 7 weeks of reviewing the Canadian comics on the big list, these are the selections that they considered the most OUTSTANDING, not the most popular.

I completely agree about the artistic merit of their work on Civil War (and New Avengers)and Moon Knight (and Spider-Man Unlimited 14), they did do work of merit that merited nomination on the ballot, and they WERE, as I pointed out, on the shorter list of nominees put forth by the Nominating Committee in Round One of the nomination process. HOWEVER, they did not make the final Round 2 Top 8 because the Nominating Committee as a whole, thru the process detailed in my earlier post, could only select 8 names for the ballot, and they chose the 8 Nominees that they did.

Which is why they aren't there. There are other artists that should be there as well - like Jacques Lamontagne and Cameron Stewart and Dale Eaglesham. I thought Tom Grummett did great work on the New Thunderbolts/Thunderbolts, he didn't even make the short list on Round 1. That's the way it works though.

Nevertheless, the candidates on this ballot are VERY strong, and it was not an easy task to narrow the choices down to a manageable ballot list. If you have not reviewed the works on the list you really should.

Ummmm...I'm not Canadian. I've only got one passport and it's from the good ol' U.S.of A.
You Shuster folk gotta double check your facts before you get these things rolling. You might want to take another look at Finch's work while you're at it, it's beautiful stuff.

Then why do people think you are Canadian? Even Wikipedia (I know not really reliable) says "Steven "Steve" McNiven is a Canadian comic book artist. "

Why are people mistaking you for Canadian?

Hey Steve,

I guess enough people know that you live in Halifax, Nova Scotia and the rules are that permanent residents are eligible to be considered at the Nominating Committee's discretion.

We passed along your note to the guys the first year we did this after we contacted you, but we didn't do that in years two or three, as we figured that if we reached that stage we would check with you first.

Kev

As for everyone else, everyone from anywhere (Canada, USA, UK, the Canary Islands and so on) can vote for David Finch (or anyone else on the list of eligible creators posted on the site) as their Favourite Canadian Comic Book Creator - English language - it's a write-in vote.

Ditto for any French language Canadian creators.

Don't let the absence of your personal favourite creator from the ballot list get you down - you can still show your support.
