DC has informed Newsarama that Darwyn Cooker’s The Spirit #1 will be reappearing, and the sold-out first issue is going back to press for a second printing, with a new cover by Cooke. The publisher also supplied us with a first look at the new cover.
“It’s incredibly gratifying to all of us working on THE SPIRIT that we’ve sold out the first issue,” Cooke said. “We’ve done our damndest to honor Will Eisner’s creation and put something together that a modern reader can enjoy. This news was a huge shot in the arm for myself and the Spirit team: (inker) J. Bone, (colorist) Dave Stewart, (letterer) Jared Fletcher, and our editors, Kristy Quinn and Scott Dunbier, are all a big part of the strip’s success. As always, thanks to the fans who’ve supported us!”
The second printing of issue #1 is due in stores on March 28th with orders due by Sunday, March 18th.
Additionally, DC provided Newsarama with a peek at The Spirit’s future, that is that issue #7 will feature three stories, written by Kyle Baker, Jimmy Palmiotti and Walter Simonson, with art by Baker, Jordi Bernet, Chris Sprouse & Karl Story
The issue will be a Summer Special, starting off with a supermodel gone bad, and then follow a path of intrigue through an old tenement building, and finish off with an unjustly accused cabbie.

I'm glad to hear the Spirit is doing well - the comic so far has been very good and is respectful of Eisner's work without being just a pastiche of it. I hope this work gets collected in hardback (Absolute Editions might be nice, but I imagine it would be quite some time before they went that route, and in this case standard hardback size would fit well next to the Archive editions of the classic Spirit).

I love the fencing behind Denny spelling out "Spirit" (very subtle).

This book is a pure joy to read every month. Cooke's style transcends the Modern Age of comics and deposits a reader to a time when comics didn't have to be so bleak and despondent--The Spirit is indicative of a bygone era of innocent fun.

The Spirit rocks;I'm certain that Mr. Eisner would approve of what's being done with his creation. It took forever for us to get a series like this again. However, I can readily say that it's been well worth the wait.
Oh, and I love the title of this article on the main page: "SPIRIT #1 DONE SOLD
OUT." It makes a Southerner such as myself feel right at home. :)

I concur 100%!
I didn't know a damn thing about The Spirit, but jumped onboard w/the Batman/Spirit one-shot, just b/c the amazing Darwyn Cooke was involved...
Been loving the book ever since! :D

I wish that had been the first printing cover...
This is a great series. Why aren't more people buying it? Arr.
I was wondering when they'd get to the first all-star "fill-in." Looking forward to it.

Good news! Good to see that DC is finally going to use the cover -- which I think is superior to the one that they went with for # 1.
Do you know what the Diamond order code for the 2nd printing is? -- so we can make sure our LCS orders a copy?

It's a great series. Surprised it took so long to sell out..I guess that means lots of people have jumped on board the past month or two. Good news :)

I was hoping this cover (used in some promotions) would pop up sooner or later.
And I wholeheartedly agree that this book is another creative hit from Cooke.
Does anybody have any idea how many copied were printed?

I'll be skipping this then. I'm buying it because of Cooke and Cooke alone. Plus, the first two writers don't do anything for me.

The initial sales were about 34,500. So it was some slightly larger than that number.

If its on the main page, its more or less exclusive to Newsarama. If its on the sidelines, that mean most other websites got the exact same info.

I was wondering how this book was selling, what with all the Civil Wars and stuff. It's a great read, hopefully this book will last for some time.

From one Southerner to another: Darwyne done dnit ruint The Spirit.
I bought the first & second issue at Megacon and regretted not buying them at my LCBS.
Regardless.. fantastic storytelling I expect from Mr. Cooke delivered.

Congrats to Darwyn Cooke, J. Bone, Jared Fletcher, Dave Stewart and the editors!
This is definately one of the best comic books out right now and they deserve it. You know I'll be buying this issue again with the new cover. And Jordi Bernet doing some art coming up? Awesome!

Did we read the same classic Spirit comics?
Without The Spirit, there's a good, strong chance that the bleak vision of society depicted in Detective Comics would never have gained wide-spread appeal. The Spirit isn't antiquated 'Good Ole' Days' entertainment like so many other Golden Age books... in many ways, it was ahead of the curve on darker, more "despondent" story themes in comics, even going so far as to introduce film noir into comic form.
I will agree with you, however, it is fun to read.
Great re-launch of a great comic. I'm really glad it is doing well.

This book has been getting better since #1, which I wasn't a fan of really.
I have my doubts about Cooke as a writer, but his art is awesome.

Congrats to Cooke and the rest of the creative team!
This is also one of my favorite books each and every month, and it's good to see so many others enjoying it also. I think Eisner is looking down from above and damn proud that his creation is living on and in such capable hands.
It'll be neat to see that #7 issue with the others onboard. Kyle Baker's long been a favorite of mine so that's already a guaranteed buy for me. And Jordi too? Wow.
