Yeah I would add Blades, Death in the Family, Son of the Demon to my list.

Also, "Masks" from Legends of the Dark Knight and the Legends of the Dark Knight Halloween Specials (that were published before the Long Halloween).

Batman: Year One for sure. Killing Joke is great. Avoid A Death In The Family like the plague (really - The Joker becomes Iran's UN Ambassador. Ugh.).

A Lonely Place of Dying is pretty good, I guess.

Why the A Death in the Family hate?

Batman : Ego by Darwyn Cooke
Gotham by Gaslight (Elseworlds tale, but phenomenal)
if you can afford them, the Neal Adams hardcovers
Batman : Year Two (if you find this in the trade entitled Fear the Reaper, it also includes the sequel "Full Circle" -- excellent stuff)
A Lonely Place of Dying
Haunted Knight
Prodigal (more a Dick story than a Bruce one)
Cataclysm and Contagion both lead into No Man's Land; good stuff
Legacy (sequel to Contagion)
Bruce Wayne : Fugitive and Bruce Wayne : Murderer (hey, i liked 'em)
Officer Down
Sword of Azrael isn't bad, leads into the Knightfall stuff

It's just bad. As I say, the ending (with the Joker becoming Iran's UN Ambassador so that he could kill all the other Ambassadors) is just one of the dumbest ideas I've ever seen in a comic book. It was all just deeply unsatisfying.

Yeah but the art was great. And the whole Joker as an ambassador had a certain bit of silver age craziness to it.

Trade in that Red Hood garbage and get...

Batman Year One
Long Halloween
Killing Joke
Batman: The Cult
Batman: Strange Apparitions
A Death in the Family- I don't get the hate; great story, great fun, great brutality
Batman: Shaman
Batman: Gothic
Batman: Venom
Batman: The Last Arkham
Batman: The Man Who Laughs (if you can find it)
Batman: Prodigal (if you can find it)

Stay away from....
Red Hood stuff (Jason Todd is dead)
Batman Year Two (which really sucks)
No Man's Land

Help me out what else should I own??These are mostly 'event' stories. You should really go after the good stuff. Some good suggestions in this thread so far. Here are some must-own trades every Bat-fan should have, with links to each:

Batman Year One (http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=6411)
The Long Halloween (http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=1283)
Batman And The Monster Men (http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=5697)
Tales of the Demon (http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=2710)
Batman In The 80s (http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=2335) - for The Player On The Other Side, an all-time Batman story
Strange Apparitions (http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=1269)
Batman Illustrated By Neal Adams (http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=3744) - 3 volumes
Batman Year 100 (http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=6412)

And coming later this year:

Batman And The Mad Monk (http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=6930) - sequel to Monster Men
Batman - Ego And Other Tails (http://www.dccomics.com/graphic_novels/?gn=7258) - collected Bat-stories of Darwyn Cooke

Strange Apparitions, especially, is required Bat-reading. It set the tone for how DC/WB uses Batman, and has been heralded as the definitive Batman ever since it came out, and even still, 30 years later. Great, great stories.

Get Batman: Ego and Other Tails when it comes out. It's full of Darwyn Cooke Batman stories.

I agree for the most part with everything that has been posted above, if you do not mind elseworlds then I have to recommend Batman:Thrill Killer and Batman: Year 100, most of the other suggestions you cant go wrong with

I liked a Death in the family.

But the Long Halloween is great.
