I mean cuz of it being weekly, did it affect it even in some small way? Just wondering... Like if you base it on regular monthlies, can you tell the difference?
And about Countdown, now that its 50 cents more than 52, how many is the page count? 32?
THANKS!

I have zero complaints about the quality of the art. It's been a nice mix of artists, but style wise has still been fairly consistent (as opposed to say, jumping from a John Cassaday to a Rob Liefeld to a Humberto Ramos).
For the most part the art has been pretty uninspired and rushed due to the tight schedule, but it's understandable and to be fair we're here for the story rather than the art.
Keep entertaining me with stories about Renee, Adam, Buddy, etc and i'll never complain.
I'm such a sucker for the second stringers.

As much as possible, I want a good story with good art.
How about my Countdown question?

The art isn't as good as it could be when compared to monthly books in general. Some issues have been better than others, but I kinda think the best art came in the back-up origins. That said, at the least the art does tell the story clearly enough.

I'll second this.
Its uninspired but its fairly solid.
The art on the backup features is generally much better.

Sometimes the art works, other times it doesn't. The best issue IMO is Jiminez/Ordway New Years issue. I'm hoping that for Countdown they manage to get a few bigger artists into the rotation.

Big artists don't do deadlines, LOL.
You'll have to get them drawing like 5 pages each.

Countdown, I believe is going to be 32 pages per issue, same as any old $3 comic.

Eh, I'm pretty sure the Countdown machine could get Reis or Van Sciver or Rags to do an issue or two as long as its farther down the line. As long as there's plenty of lead-in time, I'm sure they could do an issue.

Or there's the option of giving Frank Quitely the script to the last issue now and hope its done by the time the series is over ;)
But its Frank Quitely. He has the superpower to miss any deadline.

I've not found 52's art to be rushed or of a lower standard than I expect from a monthly book, with one exception (Chris Batista's first issue, whenever that was, had a few pages that looked rushed). I think the art has been worthy of any book on the rack these days.

In all fairness, there's some pretty ____ art out there from Marvel and DC.
52s art isn't terrible but it doesn't wow you. You don't see page after page where you are blown away with how things are captured.

Do you think Countdown will suffer the same?

Do you think Countdown will suffer the same?
It depends. They now have seperate writers working on each issue, so it's possible that a script can be finished up long enough in advance for a bigger artist to do it.

^^ So the writers this time arent limited? How about artists? Do they have specific numbers?
THANKS!

joe bennett kicked some real ass on 52. chris batista did some good work as did eddy barrows and others. phil jimenez did some nice stuff. overall 52 looked real good.
I think with Countdown switching to a system of 4 different teams working on a single issue a month, it'll be far more polished.

Yeah, I agree. The only time the art was really good was when bigger names like Jimenez and Robertson did the issue.

Add Joe Bennett and Shawn Moll to the list.

Hasn't the series had like 12 regular artists (not counting the guys drawing the little 3 page backup features)?

Obviously, the art on an on-time weekly book is not going to be at the level of the monthly books that often give the artists additional time beyond that if they need it. At it's best, 52 has had the kind of art you'll find in the regular monthly books that always come out on time. At other times, it's been decidedly subpar. But trading artistry for timeliness is part of the deal.

And Dan Jurgens and Norm Rapmund absolutely hit a home run with that last issue. That was simply beautiful.
I think the art on Countdown will probably be just as solid, if not more so. Giffen is doing breakdowns again, and that has made a HUGE difference with 52. Even with so many different guys doing pencils, each issue has a similar structure and look to each other issue.
I honestly think that if they hadn't had one guy, and that guy being Keith Giffen, doing the breakdowns for the whole series, it would have been a mess by the end of it.

Trading artistry for deadlines has been part of the problem in comics for like 60+ years.
