I think Superman is drawn to muscle bound sometimes. ( his powers don't come from his muscle size, but from the suns affect on his alien body)

Powergirl is also drawn to muscle bound. When i think of Powergirl I think of 50's model like Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, who where alot heavier then modern models, but where not bodybuilders either.

The Flash and every other speedster should be thin like track stars. Don't they all have fast metabolisms?

But the flash can also do 100000 crunches in like 30 seconds same thing with the rest of his workout.
And with his quick metabolism would also allow his body to recover super fast allowing him to work out more etc.

Well, the Batman does have 'muscles'...and he worked/works for them...not just stand around tanning.

Yeah, I guess I do. I don't enjoy when an artist uses an overly generic model for supermen. I also don't enjoy the overly-muscled action figure look. I get the mentality that supermen are supposed to keep up with our greatest athletes, and as our athletes become more and more ripped the superfolk should keep pace - so they still look "super". But I think we've hit the end of the road here. Beyond this point, it'll just look ridiculous.

For a character whose powers don't derive from muscle mass, I'd still be happy with this athletic, but believable build:

I do like when an artist takes the time to accurately draw a costume that's not tights, like Alan Scott's shirt. When it's actually drawn as a shirt, it looks great.

Powergirl has looked pretty gross when she's insanely ripped. Jim Lee's PG has that Marilyn Monroe thing going for her:

I've love to see more artists with a distinctive and unique style get superhero work. Bruce Timm, Mike Mignola, Eric Powell, Jeff Smith, Kyle Baker, and Darwyn Cooke. I live for stuff like these guy's work. Rags and Eaglesham are great at the standard look, but I love the more distinctive stuff.

You want me to put a 'black rectangle' over that one? :o

..besides, it isn't as if I took the sketch and made changes. It was like that from the start.

I appreciate the Golden Age style where all the mystery men looked like pro-wrestlers.

I also appreciate the builds people like George Perez draw.

To be honest, most sprinters are completely ripped. The same goes for speed skaters (there's a great Darkstars cover with Donna Troy on the cover where she looks just like a speed skater).

I don't have a problem with the way super-heroes are generally drawn. We all have favorite artists and ones we can't stand. And there are styles I can really do without, and ones I really like. But in general, I have no problem.

I think the biggerst person in the DCU should probably be Batman, cause he is the one who needs it the most, he relies on physical strength to do his job. Superman has powers, Flash has speed, Lantern has the power ring. Batman, has a gym, and he works like hell to keep his body at the peak of human fitness.

Yeah. Green Lanterns should be huge larda$$es...after all, the ring does it all.

...and the Flashes, sleek n' slim...built for speed.

Nah, Captain Marvel should be the biggest because of that magic idealism angle. Batman should be lean and ripped like a gymnast...excessive muscle bulk would just impede him in most of what he does.

The lean and ripped one...that is Nightwing (what with his acrobatic background).

...heck, in that side of things, he surpasses even the BAT.

In their sparring, Bruce is always written to have the bulk advantage and Dick the agility.

I know, I'm just adding a sense of misplaced reality to the DCU. Speaking of which, those Who's Who and Secret Files profiles always seemed a little off to me...Bats is 6'2" and 210 pds and he's that huge? What is Alfred putting in that tea?

210??

...I take something like b/w 225 and 240, but 210...that seems too less.

Thinking about it, it does seem like the GL's are the only heroes who arent drawn to be huge muscle boung crazy men. They have actually closer to the swimmers build than anyone.

I know! Hell, I'm 6' and 200 pds...for someone of Batman's stature "less" doesn't begin to cover it!
That's why those Secret Files entries always seemed misguided to me...some things are best left fuzzy and to the imagination (like a map of Gotham City, or how old the characters are in continuity).

I agree about Superman being too muscle-bound. Curt Swan, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Dan Jurgens, Stuart Immonen, Neal Adams and John Byrne all made Superman look strong without looking like a bodybuilder.

And I have a three-way tie between George Perez, Phil Jimenez and the Dodsons as to which one draws the best Wonder Woman.

New Way

Superman: Curt Swan

Batman: Neil Adams or Bruce Timms

Wonderwoman: Perez comes the closest but to me she has yet to have a definative artist get a hold of her.

The only thing that bugs me is this:

How the heck does the current Starman hide that beard under his spandex hood. I mean, shouldn't it be all lumpy with little hairs poking through the weave here and there? I mean c'mon a little realism please?!. ;)

If women can have large breasts bulging everywhere, I'm all for the foot long schlong bulging along the inside of Superman's right thigh. Superdickery indeed.

But Power Girl is supposed to look freakish. The original artist actuallydrew her boobs bigger every issue until DC told him to stop.
